  • In this study, the transverse vibrations of an axially moving flexible beams resting on multiple supports are investigated. The time-dependent velocity is assumed to vary harmonically about a constant mean velocity. Simple-simple, fixed-fixed, simple-simple-simple and fixed-simple-fixed boundary conditions are considered. The equation of motion becomes independent from geometry and material properties and boundary conditions, since equation is expressed in terms of dimensionless quantities. Then the equation is obtained by assuming small flexural rigidity. For this case, the fourth order spatial derivative multiplies a small parameter; the mathematical model converts to a boundary layer type of problem. Perturbation techniques (The Method of Multiple Scales and The Method of Matched Asymptotic Expansions) are applied to the equation of motion to obtain approximate analytical solutions. Outer expansion solution is obtained by using MMS (The Method of Multiple Scales) and it is observed that this solution does not satisfy the boundary conditions for moment and incline. In order to eliminate this problem, inner solutions are obtained by employing a second expansion near the both ends of the flexible beam. Then the outer and the inner expansion solutions are combined to obtain composite solution which approximately satisfying all the boundary conditions. Effects of axial speed and flexural rigidity on first and second natural frequency of system are investigated. And obtained results are compared with older studies.

  • In this research work, an exact analytical solution for thermal buckling analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) sandwich plates with clamped boundary condition subjected to uniform, linear, and non-linear temperature rises across the thickness direction is developed. Unlike any other theory, the number of unknown functions involved is only four, as against five in case of other shear deformation theories. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains, and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factor. A power law distribution is used to describe the variation of volume fraction of material compositions. Equilibrium and stability equations are derived based on the present refined theory. The non-linear governing equations are solved for plates subjected to simply supported and clamped boundary conditions. The thermal loads are assumed to be uniform, linear and non-linear distribution through-the-thickness. The effects of aspect and thickness ratios, gradient index, on the critical buckling are all discussed.

  • This paper presents a theoretical analysis for the free vibration of rectangular tanks partially filled with an ideal liquid. Wet dynamic displacements of the tanks are approximated by combining the orthogonal polynomials satisfying the boundary conditions, since the rectangular tanks are composed of four rectangular plates. The classical boundary conditions of the tanks at the top and bottom ends are considered, such as clamped, simply supported, and clamped-free boundary conditions. As the facing rectangular plates are assumed to be geometrically and structurally identical, the vibration modes of the facing plates of the tanks can be divided into two categories: symmetric and antisymmetric modes with respect to the planes passing through the center of the tanks and perpendicular to the free liquid surface. The liquid displacement potentials satisfying the Laplace equation and liquid boundary conditions are derived, and the wet dynamic modal functions of a quarter of the tanks can be expanded by the finite Fourier transform for compatibility requirements along the contacting surfaces between the tanks and liquid. An eigenvalue problem is derived using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. Consequently, the wet natural frequencies of the rectangular tanks can be extracted. The proposed analytical method is verified by observing an excellent agreement with three-dimensional finite element analysis results. The effects of the liquid level and boundary condition at the top and bottom edges are investigated.

  • For the first time, an accurate analytical solution, based on coupled three-dimensional (3D) piezoelasticity equations, is presented for free vibration analysis of the angle-ply elastic and piezoelectric flat laminated panels under arbitrary boundary conditions. The present analytical solution is applicable to composite, sandwich and hybrid panels having arbitrary angle-ply lay-up, material properties, and boundary conditions. The modified Hamiltons principle approach has been applied to derive the weak form of governing equations where stresses, displacements, electric potential, and electric displacement field variables are considered as primary variables. Thereafter, multi-term multi-field extended Kantorovich approach (MMEKM) is employed to transform the governing equation into two sets of algebraic-ordinary differential equations (ODEs), one along in-plane (x) and other along the thickness (z) direction, respectively. These ODEs are solved in closed-form manner, which ensures the same order of accuracy for all the variables (stresses, displacements, and electric variables) by satisfying the boundary and continuity equations in exact manners. A robust algorithm is developed for extracting the natural frequencies and mode shapes. The numerical results are reported for various configurations such as elastic panels, sandwich panels and piezoelectric panels under different sets of boundary conditions. The effect of ply-angle and thickness to span ratio (s) on the dynamic behavior of the panels are also investigated. The presented 3D analytical solution will be helpful in the assessment of various 1D theories and numerical methods.

  • In this paper, a higher order shear deformation theory for bending analysis of functionally graded plates resting on Pasternak foundation and under various boundary conditions is exposed. The proposed theory is based on the assumption that porosities can be produced within functionally graded plate which may lead to decline in strength of materials. In this research a novel distribution of porosity according to the thickness of FG plate are supposing. Governing equations of the present theory are derived by employing the virtual work principle, and the closed-form solutions of functionally graded plates have been obtained using Navier solution. Numerical results for deflections and stresses of several types of boundary conditions are presented. The exactitude of the present study is confirmed by comparing the obtained results with those available in the literature. The effects of porosity parameter, slenderness ratio, foundation parameters, power law index and boundary condition types on the deflections and stresses are presented.

  • The azimuth thruster is mainly installed on a vessel that requires a dynamic positioning (DP) function for special purposes. When the azimuth thruster on a vessel operates for DP, the thrust loss is induced by the thruster-hull interaction. This study examined the influence of boundary conditions in numerical simulations for predicting thrust loss. Wind turbine installation vessels (WTIV) and floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) were chosen as a target vessels. In this study, two types of boundaries were defined. The first consideration is that the boundary condition was assigned with consideration of the azimuth angle of the thruster, whereas it is fixed regardless azimuth angle of the thruster. The predicted thrust loss according to these boundary conditions showed a difference. This observation originated from the current load of the vessel. Therefore, the boundary conditions for which the current load is not induced need to be designated to obtain a realistic thrust loss in a numerical simulation.

  • In this paper, the approximately coupled method of finite element method and boundary element method to obtain efficient and accurate analysis results is proposed for a two-dimensional elasto-static problem with a geometrically abruptly changing part. As the finite element of a two-dimensional problem, three-node and four-node plane stress element is applied, and as the boundary element of a two-dimensional problem, three-node boundary element is applied. In the modeling stage, firstly, an entire analysis target object is modeled as finite elements, and then a geometrically abruptly changing part is modeled as boundary elements. The boundary element is defined using the nodes defined for modeling finite elements. In the analysis stage, finite element analysis is firstly performed on a entire analysis target object, and boundary element analysis is automatically performed afterwards. As for the boundary conditions at boundary element analysis, displacement conditions and stress conditions, which are the results of finite element analysis, are applied. As a numerical example, the analysis results for a two-dimensional elasto-static problem, a plate with a crack, are presented and investigated.

  • This paper presents three boundary techniques which are useful for FEM analysis of composite laminates: 1) a rotational symmetric boundary technique . 2) a quasi three-dimensional boundary technique and 3) a contact boundary technique. The use of the rotational symmetric boundary technique is possible for a smaller FEM model. With the use of the quasi three-dimensional boundary tecnique. quasi three dimensional analysis of composite laminates can be performed on the conventional 3-D FEM program These techniques can readily be adopted to FEM programs.

  • For the propagation of elastic waves in unbounded domains, absorbing boundary conditions at the fictitious numerical boundaries have been proposed. In this paper we focus on both first and second order paraxial boundary conditions(PBCs) in the framework of variational approximations which are based on paraxial approximations of the scalar and elastic wave equations. We propose a penalty function method for the treatment of PBCs and apply these into finite element analysis. The numerical verification of the efficiency is carried out through comparing PBCs with Lysmer-Kuhlemeyer's boundary conditions.

  • The existing code which solves two-dimensional RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations and 2-equation turbulence model equations was modified to enable numerical simulation of various supersonic flows. For this, various boundary conditions have been implemented to the code. Bleed boundary condition was incorporated into the code for calculating wall mean flow quantities. Furthermore, boundary conditions for the turbulence quantities along rough surfaces as well as porous walls were applied to the code. The code was verified and validated by comparing the computational results against the experimental data for the supersonic flows over bleed region on a flat plate. Furthermore, numerical simulations for supersonic shock boundary layer interaction with a bleed region were performed and their results were compared with the existing computational results.
