A Study on the Selection of Borrow Pits by Using VE Techniques (VE 기법을 이용한 토취장 선정에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to review that the VE techniques can be used as a selection tool of borrow pit locations. The analysis of the soil investigation report is performed for the selection of proposed borrow pit site on a large-scale residential development area. Possible earthwork volume of mining is estimated and the weighting matrix evaluation is applied to the VE techniques. After determining the evaluation items for VE assessment, important degree was calculated. The Rating and evaluation of performance is carried out on a proposed borrow pit site. And, development priority has to be decided for a proposed borrow pit sites. As a result, the relative construction cost is closely related to the haulage distance. As the haulage distance increases, the relative construction cost will be increased. Therefore, it was confirmed quantitatively that haulage distance has a significant impact on the select of borrow pits. Also, it was found that the condition of borrow pits itself is important, but it cannot be ignored the impact of the life cycle cost for the selection of optimal borrow pit sites.

  • The elevation of reclamation work in the coastal area for the industrial complex is determined through the investigation and review of marine conditions, drainage plan and fill materials. The embankment to be constructed with crushed stone on the soft soil should be safe against the wave force, immediate and long term consolidation settlement, overturning and sliding due to self-weight and other forces. Because of lack of fill material from the borrow pit, the soft marine clay to be dredged shall be used as the reclamation material. And Paper Drain Board is used as the improvement method for the deep soft clay strata.

Estimating Groundwater Level Variation due to the Construction of a Large Borrow Site using MODFLOW Numerical Modeling (대규모 토취장 개발 예정 지역의 수치모델을 이용한 지하수위 변동 예측)

  • A numerical model and field monitoring data are used to estimate a change in groundwater level at a borrow site, which will be constructed at the mountainous area with a large ground excavation in the study area, Hwaseong city. Lithologic data and hydraulic coefficients are collected at 9 boreholes and also groundwater levels are measured at these boreholes and existing wells in the study area. Additionally, groundwater recharge rate for the type of land cover is estimated using water budget analysis; 133.34mm/year for a mountainous area, 157.68mm/year for a farming area, 71.08mm/year for an urbanized area, and 26.06mm/year for a bedrock exposure area. The change in groundwater level in and around a borrow site is simulated with Modflow using these data. The result of a transient model indicates that a removal of high ground (over 40El.m) by an excavation will produce a decrease in groundwater levels, up to 1 m, around a borrow site in 10 years. It also explains that this ground excavation will bring about the decreases of 9.4% and 7.0% for groundwater recharge and surface runoff, respectively, which are the factors causing groundwater level's change. This study shows that it is required to construct the groundwater monitoring wells to observe the change of groundwater near a borrow site.

  • The project of Construction of Siem Reap bypass road in Cambodia consists of alignment improvement of existing route, extension of width of road and laterite paving. This project is carried out by fast-track method on the design and construction for bypass road of 15.2 km length and 8m width for five months. Though some difficulties for the construction works such as the location of borrow pit and rock source, rainy seasons etc, the construction could be completed successfully owing to the cooperation of related authorities, company and residents. This 2 way Angkor detouring road will function as industrial roads in Siemreap region. These new two roads will not only bring better logistics requirements and safety, but also impact to poverty alleviation and preservation the beauty of the ecological environment of Angkor region. The basic information related to geotechnical engineering of this project is introduced.

Case Studies of Electrical Resistivity Imaging Technique in Civil & Environmental Engineering Areas (전기비저항 영상화 기법의 토목 및 환경분야 적용사례연구)

  • Electrical resistivity method, one of the most widely used geophysical prospecting methods. has been usually applied to explorations for groundwater and underground resources. However, it has been extending its scope to civil & environmental engineering areas since it twas been developed so as to image underground structures effectively. A FEM algorithm for the dipole-dipole array was developed to correct topographic effects which have a serious influence on electrical methods. Applicability of the electrical resistivity imaging technique to civil & environmental engineering areas was verified through three case histories in this study First, thickness of soil layers was profiled to judge the possibility of developing borrow-pits tn an industrial complect site. Second, weak zones such as fractures and coal seams were detected to provide geological information for design and construction in a high mountain tunnel site. Third, horizontal/vertical distribution of the contaminated zone and depth of waste disposal were delineated in a completed industrial waste disposal site.

  • This study check the construction site and borrow pit location using GIS-based Open Global Map. Construction Equipment (Dump, Grader) utilizes the GPS (Global Positioning System) to gain equipment's real-time position, speed, altitude, using the data such as directions to perform real-time monitoring. The analysis of the productivity is completed through using the data, and the optimal number of equipment is calculated. It was found that the analysis results showed approximately 30% less cost compared to the actual design plan.

  • Ministry of construction & transportation is operating for the soil and rock information system and is considered to accurate application of soil conversion factor that is essentially necessary for accurate calculation of earth volume. Since the balance of cutting earth in public work, the plan of spoil bank or borrow pit are directly related to construction costs, accurate calculation of earth volume and efficient scheme of haul are important. As such, this study has provided methods that can acquire information that is more rapid, applicable to job sites, and trustworthy by comparing resultant values of photogrammetry, laser scanning, or inside job site experimentations, and calculated soil conversion factor by applying photogrammetry and laser scanning methods for hard rock that has difficulty in calculating soil conversion factor. The study can provide alternatives that can resolve the problems of unbalanced earth volume that may arise in applying to plans the earth conversion factor that relies on planning books and experience without considering the characteristics of job site earth, and can establish its relevancy by calculating soil conversion factor for hard rock that has relative difficulties in doing inside or job site testing.
