  • In a borate buffer solution, the growth kinetics and the electronic properties of passive film on nickel were investigated, using the potentiodynamic method, chronoamperometry, and single- or multi-frequency electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The oxide film formed during the passivation process of nickel has showed the electronic properties of p-type semiconductor, which follow from the Mott-Schottky equation. It was found out that the passive film ($Ni(OH)_2$) of Ni formed in the low electrode potential changes to NiO and NiO(OH) while the electrode potential increases.

  • In a borate buffer solution, the growth kinetics and the electronic properties of passive film on cobalt were investigated, using the potentiodynamic method, chronoamperometry, and single-frequency electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It was found out that the unstable passive film ($Co(OH)_2$) and CoO of Co formed in the low electrode potential changes to $Co_3O_4$ and CoOOH while the electrode potential increases. And the composition of the passive films was varied against the applied potential and oxidation time. The oxide film formed during the passivation process of cobalt has showed the electronic properties of p-type semiconductor, which follow from the Mott-Schottky equation.

  • Barium Bismuth Oxide Borate (BBOB) has been synthesized for the first time using solution combustion technique. SEM analysis reveal flower shape of the nanoparticles. The formation of the nanoparticles has been confirmed through XRD & FTIR studies which gives the physical and chemical structure of the novel material. The UV light absorption is observed in the range 200-300 nm. The present study highlights the radiation shielding ability of BBOB for different radiations like X/Gamma rays, Bremsstrauhlung and neutrons. The gamma shielding efficiency is comparable to that of lead in lower energy range and lesser than lead in the higher energy range. The bremsstrauhlung exposure constant is comparably larger for BBOB NPs than that of concrete and steel however it is lesser than that of lead. The beauty of BBOB nanoparticles lies in, high absorption of radiations and low emission of secondary radiations when compared to lead. In addition, the neutron shielding parameters like scattering length, absorption and scattering cross sections of BBOB are found to be much better than lead, steel and concrete. Thus, BBOB nanoparticles are highly efficient in absorbing X/Gamma rays, neutrons and bremsstrauhlung radiations.

  • In a borate buffer solution, the growth kinetics and the electronic properties of passive film on aluminum were investigated, using the potentiodynamic method, chronoamperometry, and multi-frequency electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The corrosion of aluminum was heavily influenced by the degree of oxygen concentration because of the increasing reduction current. The oxide film formed during the passivation process of aluminum has showed the electronic properties of n-type semiconductor, which follow from the Mott-Schottky equation. It was found out that the passive film (Al(OH)3) of Al formed in the low electrode potential changes to Al2O3 while the electrode potential increases. The growth kinetics data as measured by chronoamperometry suggests a mechanism in which the growth of the film of Al2O3 is determined by field-assisted transport of ions through the film.

  • Effects of texture on the electrochemical behaviors of single grains in polycrystalline zinc were investigated using a capillary-based micro-droplet cell. Pontiodynamic sweeps and capacity measurements were carried out in pH 9 borate buffer solution. The cyclic voltammograms and the capacity measurements on single grains with different crystallographic orientations in polycrystalline Zn showed a strong dependence of oxide growth on crystallographic grain orientation. The total charge consumed for oxide formation and the inverse capacity increased with an increase of surface packing density of grain. suggesting the oxide formation was greater on grains with higher surface packing density.

  • The expansion of lithium-ion battery usage beyond portable electronic devices to electric vehicles and energy storage systems is driven by their high energy density and favorable cycle characteristics. Enhancing the stability and performance of these batteries involves exploring solid electrolytes as alternatives to liquid ones. While sulfide-based solid electrolytes have received significant attention for commercialization, research on amorphous-phase glass solid electrolytes in oxide-based systems remains limited. Here, we investigate the glass transition temperatures and sintering behaviors by changing the molecular ratio of Li2O/B2O3 in borate glass comprising Li2O-B2O3-Al2O3 system. The glass transition temperature is decreasing as increasing the amount of Li2O. When we sintered at 450℃, just above the glass transition temperature, the samples did not consolidate well, while the proper sintered samples could be obtained under the higher temperature. We successfully obtained the borate glass ceramics phases by melt-quenching method, and the sintering characteristics are investigated. Future studies could explore optimizing ion conductivity through refining processing conditions, adjusting the glass former-to-modifier ratio, and incorporating additional Li salt to enhance the ionic conductivity.

  • The sealing technique between a glass tube and a copper heat pipe in an evacuated tube solar collector is studied. In this study two different sealing techniques, such as flame method and furnace firing, are examined. After the sealing of a copper to a glass, the oxidation state of the copper and its bonding morphology were examined by SEM and XRD. Its oxidation was retarded by coating of borate solution on the copper, and $Cu_2O(cuprite)$ turned into CuO(tenorite) with increase in a firing temperature and firing time. Porous structure was found in the oxide layer when CuO formed. The best sealing morphology was observed when the thickness of the oxidation layer was less than $20{\mu}m$. The sealing technique performed in a furnace was promising and the satisfactory result was obtained when the sample was fired at $950^{\circ}C$ for 5 min under $N_2$ atmosphere. Annealing procedure is recommended to remove the stress left at the bonding zone.

  • This work demonstrates arc generation and anodic film formation behaviors on Al1050 alloy during PEO (plasma electrolytic oxidation) treatment under a constant direct current in an alkaline electrolyte containing silicate, carbonate and borate ions. Only one big arc more than 2 mm diameter was generated first at the edges and it was moving on the fresh surface or staying occasionally at the edges, resulting in the local burning due to generation of an extremely big orange colored arc at the edges. Central region of the flat surface was not fully covered with PEO films even after sufficiently long treatment time because of the local burning problem. The anodic oxides formed on the flat surface by arcing once were found to consist of a number of small oxide nodules with spherical shape of $3{\sim}6{\mu}m$ size and irregular shapes of about $5{\sim}10{\mu}m$ width and $10{\sim}20{\mu}m$ length. The anodic oxide nodules showed uniform thickness of about $3{\mu}m$ and rounded edges. These experimental results suggest that one big arc observed on the specimen surface under the application of a constant direct current is composed of a number of small micro-arcs less than $20{\mu}m$ size.

  • This study has been undertaken with objective of studying the mechanism and condition of formation of hexagonal boron nitride from reduction of boric okide in the presence of carbon under nitrogen atmosphere. It was found that the formation of hexagonal boron nitride was started at 1400$^{\circ}C$ and almost completed its conversion at 1550$^{\circ}C$. The morphology of boron nitride synthesized in this study was very fine and platelet. It was considered as reaction pathway of hexagonal boron nitride that boron oxide was reduced to born and evaporated by activated carbon, and then it was reacted with nitrogen.

  • Low-cost ceramic membrane supports with pore sizes in the range of $0.52-0.62{\mu}m$ were successfully prepared by uniaxial dry compaction method using inexpensive raw materials including kaolin, bentonite, talc, sodium borate, and alkaline-earth oxides in carbonate forms (e.g., $MgCO_3$, $CaCO_3$, and $SrCO_3$). The prepared green supports were sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 8 hr in air. The effect of alkaline-earth oxide additives on the flexural strength of clay-based membrane supports was investigated. The porosity of the clay-based membrane supports was found to be in the range of 33-34%. The flexural strength of the clay-based membrane supports with 1% alkaline-earth carbonates was found to be in the range of 42.8-52.7 MPa. The addition of alkaline-earth carbonates to clay-based membrane supports resulted in large increases (47-80%) in the flexural strength of the membrane supports, compared to that of membrane supports without alkaline-earth carbonates. The typical flexural strength of the clay-based membrane support with 1% $SrCO_3$ was 52.7 MPa at 33.8% porosity.
