The purposes of this study were to examine the variability of adhesive thickness on the different site of the cavity wall when used total-etch system without filler and simplified self-etch system with filler and to evaluate the relationship between variable adhesive thickness and microtensile bond strength to the cavity wall. A class I cavity in six human molars was prepared to expose all dentinal walls. Three teeth were bonded with a filled adhesive, $Clearfil^{TM}$ SE bond ana the other three teeth were bonded with unfilled adhesives, $Scotchbond^{TM}$ Multi Purpose. Morphology and thickness of adhesive layer were examined using fluorescence microscope. Bonding agent thickness was measured at three points along the axial cavity wall edge of cavity margin (rim). halfway down each cavity wall (h1f), internal angle of the cavity (ang). After reproducing the adhesive thickness at rim, h1f and ang, micro-tensile bond strength were evaluated. For both bonding agents, adhesive thickness of ang was significantly thicker than that of rim and h1f (P <0.05). As reproduced the adhesive thickness, microtensile bond strength was increased as adhesive thickness was increased in two bonding agents. Adhesive thickness of internal angle of the cavity was significantly thicker than that of the cavity margin and the halfway cavity wall for both bonding agents. Microtensile bond strength of the thick adhesive layer at the internal angle of the cavity was higher than that of the thin adhesive layer at 1,he cavity margin and the halfway cavity in the two bonding systems.
In order to improve the interfacial bonding force and reaction polymerization degree of the carbon fiber reinforced nylon 6 composite material, the surface of the existing epoxy-sizing carbon fiber was desized to remove the epoxy and treated with urethane, nylon and phenoxy sizing agent, was observed. The interfacial bond strength of the resized carbon fiber was confirmed by IFSS (Interfacial Shear Strength) and the fracture surface was observed by scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the interfacial bonding strength of the carbon fiber treated with nylon and phenoxy sizing agents was higher than that of urethane - based sizing. It has been found that the urethane - type resizing carbon fiber has lower interfacial bonding strength than the conventional epoxy - sizing carbon fiber. This result shows that the interfacial bonding between carbon fiber and nylon 6 is improved by removing low activity and smoothness of existing carbon fiber.

Large thermal stress due to the difference between silicon carbide and graphite's coefficients of thermal expansion could be formed during crystal growing process of silicon carbide (SiC) at high temperature. The large thermal stress could separate the SiC seed crystals from graphite components, which bring about the drop of the seed crystal during crystal growth. However, the bonding properties of SiC seed crystal module has hardly reported so far. In this study, SiC and graphite were bonded using 3 types of bonding agents and a three-point bending tests using a mixed-mode flexure test were conducted for the bonded samples to evaluate the bonding characteristics between SiC and graphite. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and X-ray Computed Tomography were used to analyze the bonding characteristics and the microstructures of the SiC-graphite interfaces bonded with the bonding agents. As results, an excellent bonding agent was chosen to fabricate SiC seed crystal module with 50 mm in diameter. An SiC single crystal with 50 mm in diameter was successfully grown without falling out during top seeded solution growth of SiC at high temperature.
This study compared the effect of an activator, intermediate bonding resin and low-viscosity flowable resin on the microtensile bond strength of a self-curing composite resin used with two-step total etching adhesives. Twenty extracted permanent molars were used. The teeth were assigned randomly to nine groups (n=10) according to the adhesive system and application of additional methods (activator, intermediate adhesive, flowable resin). The bonding agents and additional applications of each group were applied to the dentin surfaces. Self-curing composite resin buildups were made for each tooth to form a core, 5mm in height. The restored teeth were then stored in distilled water at room temperature for 24h before sectioning. The microtensile bond strength of all specimens was examined. The data was analyzed statistically by one-way ANOVA and a Scheffe's test. The application of an intermediate bonding resin (Optibond FL adhesive) and low-viscosity flowable resin (Tetric N-flow) produced higher bond strength than that with the activator in all groups. Regardless of the method selected, Optibond solo plus produced the lowest ${\mu}TBS$ to dentin. The failure modes of the tested dentin bonding agents were mostly adhesive failure but there were some cases showed cohesive failure in the resin.
This study was designed to evaluate the anti cariogenic effect of F in primers, bonding agents, composite resins or glass ionomer cements in enamel. Twenty-five extracted teeth were selected and a cavity was prepared on either the buccal or the lingual surface of each tooth. After pumicing and etching, the samples were divided into 5 groups. In group A, the samples were primed, bonded and filled with ART bond and Brilliant Enamel (Coltene, Switzerland). Group B composed of Optibond and Herculited XRV (Kerr, USA), group C composed of Syntac and Tetric(Vivadent, Lichtenstein), and group D composed of Scotch-bond Multipurpose and Z 100 (3M, YSA). In group E, the samples were filled with glass ionomer cement (Fuji II LC, Japan), All surfaces except the 2mm beyond the cavosurface margin of the sample were protected, and samples were then put into an acid buffer for 3 days to develop the initial caries. The samples were then sectioned through the filling body into thin wafers and then examined with a polarizing microscope under water imbibition. The fluoride in primer, bonding agent, or composite filling material did not prevent the initial caries in the enamel area adjacent to the filling body whereas the fluoride in the glass ionomer did prevent the initial stage caries.

PURPOSE. Bonding agents (BA) are the crucial weak link of composite restorations. Since the commercial materials' compositions are not disclosed, studies to formulize the optimum ratios of different components are of value. The aim of this study was to find a proper formula of BAs. MATERIALS AND METHODS. This explorative experimental in vitro study was composed of 4 different sets of extensive experiments. A commercial BA and 7 experimental formulas were compared in terms of degree of conversion (5 experimental formulas), shear bond strength, mode of failure, and microleakage (3 experimental formulas). Statistical analyses were performed (${\alpha}$=.05). The DC of selected formula was tested one year later. RESULTS. The two-way ANOVA indicated a significant difference between the shear bond strength (SBS) of two tissues (dentin vs. enamel, P=.0001) in a way that dentinal bonds were weaker. However, there was no difference between the four materials (P=.283). The adhesive mode of failure was predominant in all groups. No differences between the microleakage of the four materials at occlusal (P=.788) or gingival (P=.508) sites were detected (Kruskal-Wallis). The Mann-Whitney U test showed a significant difference between the microleakage of all materials (3 experimental formulas and a commercial material) together at the occlusal site versus the gingival site (P=.041). CONCLUSION. A formula with 62% bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA), 37% hydroxy ethyl methacrylate (HEMA), 0.3% camphorquinone (CQ), and 0.7% dimethyl-para-toluidine (DMPT) seems a proper formula for mass production. The microleakage and SBS might be respectively higher and lower on dentin compared to enamel.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was aimed to compare the shear bond strength on dentin of three dentin bonding agents and two resin cements used in conjunction with self-cured composite resin core material. Material and method : Control group and six experimental groups were divided for this study. Control group was designated as specimens bonded with Tenure$ A&B^{(R)}$. Experimental groups were as follows : PB-BL group : specimens bonded with Prime&Bond $NT^{(R)}$, $BondLink^{(R)}$ SB-BL group : specimens bonded with $^{(R)}$, BondLink$SingleBond^{(R)}$ PB group : specimens bonded with Prime&Bond $NT^{(R)}$ SB group : specimens bonded with $SingleBond^{(R)}$ PF group : specimens bonded with $Panavia-F^{(R)}$ BI group specimens bonded with Bistite $II^{(R)}$ All specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 hours, followed by the shear bond strength was tested by universal testing machine. The data was analysed statistically by Mann-Whitney test. Results : 1. For Prime&Bond $NT^{(R)}$ and $SingleBonde^{(R)}$, the shear bond strength was 0.24 MPa and 7.19 MPa each by each, while Tenure $A&B^{(R)}$ group control was measured at 13.93 MPa (p<0.05). Especially for Prime&Bond $NT^{(R)}$ it did not get conjunction with dentin. 2. For Prime&Bond $NT^{(R)}$ and $SingleBond^{(R)}$ using $BondLink^{(R)}$, there was no significant difference as a result of 11.73 MPa and 14.00 MPa each by each (p<0.05). 3. For $Panavia-F^{(R)}$ and Bistite $II^{(R)}$, they showed the highest shear bond strength as measured by 18.24 MPa and 16.09 MPa each (p<0.05).
Purpose: This study examined the recovery of the dentin-resin bonding strength, and the difference in the bonding strength after applying pH hemostatic agents at various pH. Materials and methods: Bosmin, Hemodent, Astregedent, and Visine were used as the hemostatic agents in this study. The Bosmin, Hemodent, and Astrigedent hemostatic agents are acidic, and the Visine hemostatic agent is neutral and is used as a decongestant. Ninety human molar teeth were used as the specimen. The teeth were sectioned using a diamond wheel until the dentin was exposed and wet ground by silica paper. The specimens were divided into two groups according to the hemostatic agent used. The specimens were then subdivided into 9 groups according to the application of re etching (R group) or rinsing only (N group). A commonly used resin bonding procedure was used in the control group. The resin bonding procedure was managed dentin using celluloid capsule. In addition, the shear bond strength was measured using an Instron. Results: In general, samples with the applied hemostatic agent, with the exception of Visine, had a slightly weak bond that was similar to the control group. In addition, the rinsing only (N) group had slightly weak bond that was similar to the re etching (R) group. Conclusion: The application of a hemostatic agent on the dentin surface does not affect the shear bond strength after application for a short time. In addition, rinsing only can recover the shear bond strength making other management procedures redundant, particularly re etching.

Objectives: This study determined the effect of the air-stream application time and the bonding technique on the dentin bond strength of adhesives with different solvents. Furthermore, the content and volatilization rate of the solvents contained in the adhesives were also evaluated. Materials and Methods:Three adhesive systems with different solvents (Stae, SDI, acetone; XP Bond, Dentsply De Trey, butanol; Ambar, FGM, ethanol) were evaluated. The concentrations and evaporation rates of each adhesive were measured using an analytical balance. After acid-etching and rinsing, medium occlusal dentin surfaces of human molars were kept moist (conventional) or were treated with 10% sodium hypochlorite for deproteinization. After applying adhesives over the dentin, slight air-stream was applied for 10, 30 or 60 sec. Composite cylinders were built up and submitted to shear testing. The data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: Stae showed the highest solvent content and Ambar the lowest. Acetone presented the highest evaporation rate, followed by butanol. Shear bond strengths were significantly affected only by the factors of 'adhesive' and 'bonding technique' (p < 0.05), while the factor 'duration of air-stream' was not significant. Deproteinization of dentin increased the bond strength (p < 0.05). Stae showed the lowest bond strength values (p < 0.05), while no significant difference was observed between XP Bond and Ambar. Conclusions: Despite the differences in content and evaporation rate of the solvents, the duration of air-stream application did not affect the bond strength to dentin irrespective of the bonding technique.
