The purpose of this investigation is to examine the effects of the strengthening treatments on the mechanical properties of the flame-sprayed titania ceramic coating layer. The strengthening treatments for flame sprayed specimens were carried out in 12 different conditions in vaccum furance. The mechanical properties such as microhardness, thermal shock resistance, adhesive strength and erosion resistance were tested for the sprayed specimens after strengthening treatments. And it was clear that the mechanical properties of coating layer were much improved by the strengthening treatments. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. It was shown that the metallurgical bond was formed between substrate and coating layer by the strengthening treatments and that thermal shock resistance and adhesive strength were remarkably raised. 2. Microhardness of coating lay was considerably increased by the strengthening treatments. 3. Erosion resistance and porosity of coating layer were slightly improved by the strengthening treatments.

Kinik Company pioneered diamond pad conditioners protected by DLC barrier ($DiaShield^{(R)}$ Coating) back in 1999 (Sung & Lin, US Patent 6,368,198). Kink also evaluated Cermet Composite Coating (CCC or $C^3$, patent pending) with a composition that grades from a metallic (e.g. stainless steel) interlayer to a ceramic (e.g. $Al_2O_3$ or SiC) exterior. The metallic interlayer can form metallurgical bond with metallic matrix on the diamond pad conditioner. The ceramic exterior is both wear and corrosion resistant. The gradational design of $C^3$ coating will assure its strong adherence to the substrate because there is no weak boundary between coating and substrate.

This study is to investigate the bond characteristics of glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) reinforcing bars in concrete by pullout test experimentally. Three different types of GFRP bars with different surface deformations were considered in this study. Also, standard deformed steel reinforcing bar with or without epoxy-coating were included for the comparisons of bond strength. All test procedures including specimens preparation, test apparatus and measuring devices were made according to the recommendation of CSA(Canadian Standards Association) Standard S806-02. From the test results, it was found that small surface indentations contributed to increase the bond strength of GFRP bar significantly. Based on the limited test results till now, the bond strength of GFRP bar with sand-coated deformation commercially available in foreign market is around $80\%$ of that of steel deformed bars.
The development of new spraying processes has increased the demand for high quality protective coatings. Many thermal spraying processes have been developed to obtain coatings for a wide spectrum of materials and substrates. The plasma spray process was used to deposit coatings of WC-12%Co powders on mild steel substrate, and the characteristics of as-sprayed and vacuum heat treated coatings have been investigated. The variations of microhardness and bond strength in WC-12%Co coatings after heat treatment under vacuum circumstance have been investigated. The effects of phases and morphologies of WC-12%Co coatings have been investigated by utilizing X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The microhardness and bond strength of the coatings were increased with increasing the temperature in the temperature range of $700^{circ}C~1000^{\circ}C$. The bond strength was obtained 49 MPa after vacuum heat treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$.
In this study, we fabricate a thin- and dense-BCuP-5 coating layer, one of the switching device multilayers, through a plasma spray process. In addition, the microstructure and macroscopic properties of the coating layer, such as hardness and bond strength, are investigated. Both the initial powder feedstock and plasma-sprayed BCuP-5 coating layer show the main Cu phase, Cu-Ag-Cu3P ternary phases, and Ag phase. This means that microstructural degradation does not occur during plasma spraying. The Vickers hardness of the coating layer was measured as 117.0 HV, indicating that the fine distribution of the three phases enables the excellent mechanical properties of the plasma-sprayed BCuP-5 coating layer. The pull-off strength of the plasma-sprayed BCuP-5 coating layer is measured as 16.5 kg/㎠. Based on the above findings, the applicability of plasma spray for the fabrication process of low-cost multi-layered electronic contact materials is discussed and suggested.

In this study, to examine the use of sulfur polymer as a coating agent for concrete, durability and hazard evaluations were performed. The result of the evaluation indicated that the chemical resistance of the coating agent for concrete was outstanding against acidic, base, and alkaline solutions. The evaluation of the bond strength after an accelerated weathering test depending on the mixing condition indicated that the most outstanding strength characteristic was obtained when silica powder and fly ash were mixed at the same time. The bond strength exceeded 1 MPa in every mixing condition even after the repeated hot and cold treatment of the coating agent specimen for concrete, and the SFS mix proportion showed the highest bond strength. The examination of the accelerated carbonation and chloride ion penetration resistance of the concrete coated with the coating agent indicated that the specimen coated with the coating agent using silica powder as a filler showed the most outstanding durability. When a fish toxicity test was performed to examine the hazard of the use of the functional polymer as a coating agent for concrete, the functional polymer was found to have no effect on the organisms. When the chemical resistance, freezing and thawing resistance, carbonation, and chloride ion penetration resistance of the coating agent were considered, substituting silica powder and fly ash as the fillers of the functional polymer by 20%, respectively, was the optimal level in the range of this study.
The effect of carrier gases (He, $N_2$) on the properties of Ti coating layers were investigated to manufacture high-density Ti coating layers. Cold spray coating layers manufactured using He gas had denser and more homogenous structures than those using $N_2$ gas. The He gas coating layers showed porosity value of 0.02% and hardness value of Hv 229.1, indicating more excellent properties than the porosity and hardness of $N_2$ gas coating layers. Bond strengths were examined, and coating layers manufactured using He recorded a value of 74.3 MPa; those manufactured using $N_2$ gas had a value of 64.6 MPa. The aforementioned results were associated with the fact that, when coating layers were manufactured using He gas, the powder could be easily deposited because of its high particle impact velocity. When Ti coating layers were manufactured by the cold spray process, He carrier gas was more suitable than $N_2$ gas for manufacturing excellent coating layers.
PURPOSE. To explore the influence of different surface conditionings on surface changes and the influence of surface treatments and aging on the bond strengths of composites to non-aged and aged resin nanoceramics. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Rectangular-shaped non-aged and aged (5000 thermocycles) resin nanoceramic specimens (Lava Ultimate) (n=63, each) were divided into 3 groups according to surface treatments (untreated, air abrasion, or silica coating) (n=21). The surface roughness was measured and scanning electron microscopy was used to examine one specimen from each group. Afterwards, the specimens were repaired with a composite resin (Filtek Z550) and half were sent for aging (5000 thermocycles, n=10, each). Shear bond strengths and failure types were evaluated. Roughness and bond strength were investigated by two- and three-way analysis of variance, respectively. The correlation between the roughness and bond strength was investigated by Pearson's correlation test. RESULTS. Surface-treated samples had higher roughness compared with the untreated specimens (P=.000). For the non-aged resin nanoceramic groups, aging was a significant factor for bond strength; for the aged resin nanoceramic groups, surface treatment and aging were significant factors. The failures were mostly adhesive after thermal cycling, except in the non-aged untreated group and the aged air-abraded group, which had mostly mixed failures. Roughness and bond strength were positively correlated (P=.003). CONCLUSION. Surface treatment is not required for the repair of non-aged resin nanoceramic; for the repair of aged resin nanoceramic restorations, air abrasion is recommended.
Statement of problem. The aims of the study were to evaluate the effect of current surface conditioning methods on the bond strength of a resin composite luting cement bonded to ceramic surfaces and to identify the optimum cement type. Material and methods. The sixty zirconia ceramic specimens(10 per group) with EVEREST milling machine and 60 tooth block were made. The zirconia ceramic surface was divided into two groups according to surface treatment: (1) airborne abrasion with $110{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide particles; (2) Rocatec system, tribochemical silica coating. The zirconia ceramic specimens were cemented to tooth block using resin cements. The tested resin cements were Rely X ARC, Panavia F and Superbond C&B. Each specimen was mount in a jig of the universal testing machine for shear strength. The results were subjected to 2-way ANOVA and Post hoc tests was performed using Tukey, Scheffe, and Bonferroni test. Results. The mean value of shear bond strength(MPa) were as follows: $$RelyXARC(+Al_2O_3),5.35{\pm}1.69$$; $$RelyXARC(+Rocatec),8.50{\pm}2.13$$; $$PanaviaF(+Al_2O_3),9.58{\pm}1.13$$; $$PanaviaF(+Rocatec),12.98{\pm}1.71$$; $$SuperbondC&B(+Al_2O_3)8.27{\pm}2.04$$; $$SuperbondC&B(+Rocatec),14.46{\pm}2.39$$. There was a significant increase in the shear bond strength when the ceramic surface was subjected to the tribochemical treatment(Rocatec 3M) in all cement groups(P<0.05). Bonding strengths of cements applied to samples treated with $Al_2O_3$ were compared; Rely X ARC showed the lowest values, whereas Panavia F cement showed higher value than that of Superbond C&B group with no statistical significance. When the bond strength of cements with of Rocatec treatment was compared, Rely X ARC showed lowest values. Overall, it was apparent that tribochemical treated Super-Bond possessed higher mean bond strength (14.46MPa; P<0.05) than that of Panavia F cement group with no significance. Conclusions. Silica coating followed silanization(Rocatec treatment) increase the bond strength between resin cement and zirconia ceramic. Panavia F containing phosphate monomer and Superbond C&B comprised of 4-META tend to bond chemically with zirconia ceramic, thus demonstrating higher bond strength compared to BisGMA resin cement. Superbond C&B has shown to have highest value of bonding strength to zirconia ceramic after Rocatec treatment compared to other cement.
Purpose: To investigate shear bonding strength between dental zirconia ceramics with different surface treatment and metal bracket. Methods: Zirconia ceramics(LAVA, 3M ESPE, USA) were divided to 4 groups according to their surface treatment; no surface treatment(G1), sand blasting(G2), silane coating(G3), and sand blasting+silane coating(G4). Specimens were bonded to metal bracket using resin bond($Transbond^{TM}XT$, 3M Unitek, USA). Shear bond strength was measured using universal test machine(3366 INSTRON. U.S.A) with cross head speed of 1 mm/min. Microstructural investigation for fracture surface was performed after shear test. Results: Shear bonding strengths of single surface treatment groups (G2 and G3) were higher than no treatment group(G1). Combined Treatment Group (G4) showed the highest shear bond strength of 9.15MPa. Microstructural observation shows that higher shear bonding strength was obtained when debonding was occurred at metal bracket/resin interface rather than zirconia ceramic/resin interface. Conclusion: Surface treatment of zirconia is necessary to obtain higher bonding strength. Combined treatment can be more effective when surface the surfaces are kept clean and homogeneous.
