Comparisons of Core Temperature Between a Telemetric Pill and Heart Rate Estimated Core Temperature in Firefighters

  • Background: Firefighters may experience high environmental temperatures or carry out intensive physical tasks, or both, which leads to increased core body temperature and risk of fatalities. Hence there is a need to remotely and non-invasively monitor core body temperature. Methods: Estimated (heart rate algorithm) and actual core body temperature (ingested telemetric pill) measures were collected simultaneously for comparison during training exercises on 44 firefighter volunteers. Results: Prediction of core body temperature varied, with no specific identifiable pattern between the algorithm values and directly measured body core temperatures. Group agreement of Lin's Concordance of 0.74 (95% Upper 0.75, lower CI 0.73), was deemed poor. Conclusion: From individual agreement data Lin's Concordance was variable (Min 0.11, CI 0.13-0.01; Max 0.83, CI 0.86-0.80), indicating that the heart rate algorithm approach was not suitable for core body temperature monitoring in this population group, especially at the higher more critical core body temperatures seen.

  • In order to study the relationship between body core temperature and adiposity , the core temperatures of normal weight female college students were measured during an instant-noodle lunch eaten in a laboratory at the ambient temperature of 22-24.8$^{\circ}C$. Ambient temperature was positively correlated with meal-start core temperature and meal duration. The difference between the peak postprandial and the meal-start core temperature was negatively correlated with body weight and BMI. This means that the thermogenic response induced by meal consumption was negatively associated with adiposity. Meal duration also showed a negative correlation with body weight, BMI, and hip girth. Thus, the obese eating style characterized by a rapid rate of food intake was also associated with adiposity in normal weight women. It was possibly a contributing factor in the development of obesity. In conclusion, adiposity is negatively associated with the difference between the peak postprandial and the meal-start core temperature and meal duration during a meal.

  • Changes in core body temperature are closely related to initiation and maintenance of sleep, and are influenced by various factors such as air temperature, room temperature, clothing, human activities, and medications. These factors are closely related to sleep fragments, insomnia and other sleep disorders. Understanding the effect of the temperature related to human surroundings on the core body temperature and sleep, will be useful for understanding the physiology of sleep and to treat sleep disorders.

The Effect of Water-Filtered Infrared-A (wIRA) on Body Core and Body Surface Temperatures in Anesthetized Rabbits Maintained with Isoflurane

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate body temperature changes in rabbits anesthetized using water-filtered infrared-A (wIRA). Ten rabbits were used for this study. For the experimental group (wIRA group; wG, n = 5), the experimental equipment was used and irradiated using wIRA. The control group (CG, n = 5) did not have any warming device. There were no significant differences in heart rate, respiration rate, and end tidal CO2 (EtCO2) between wG and CG. After 80 min, the core body temperature of wG rabbits was significantly higher than that of CG rabbits. The surface body temperature was significantly higher while receiving wIRA support at all time points after 5 min. In conclusion, in rabbits under inhalation anesthesia, the surface body temperature was better maintained than the core body temperature when using wIRA.

Performance and Heat Tolerance of Broilers as Affected by Genotype and High Ambient Temperature

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of the broiler's genotype ($G_t$) and ambient temperature ($T_a$) on performance and core body temperature ($T_core$) of broiler chicks. A factorial arrangement of two $G_t$ (Hubbard and ISA J57 chicks) and two $T_a$ (moderate, $23{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ and hot, $33{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$) were used in this study. Performance data (body weight gain, feed intake and feed:gain ratio) were determined weekly for six weeks. Chicks' $T_core$ was measured using a biotelemetric system between Weeks five and six. Results showed that body weight gain and feed intake were significantly high, and feed:gain ratio was significantly low for Hubbard chicks compared to those of ISA J57 chicks. High $T_a$ significantly reduced weight gain and feed intake. Furthermore, the reduction in body weight gain and feed intake under the hot $T_a$ was more pronounced for Hubbard chicks than those of the ISA J57 chicks resulting in significant $G_t$ by $T_a$ interaction. Chicks grown under moderate $T_a$ had significantly lower $T_core$ than those grown under hot $T_a$. The $T_core$ of the Hubbard chicks was significantly lower than that of the ISA J57 at the moderate $T_a$ while under the hot $T_a$, the magnitude of the change in $T_core$ was more pronounced in Hubbard chicks than that of ISA J57; this resulted in a significant $G_t$ by $T_a$ interaction. The results of this study indicate that chicks with higher potential for growth under thermo-neutral temperature are more susceptible to heat stress than chicks with lower potential for growth. This maybe due, at least in part, to their lower body $T_core$ under moderate temperature and to the lesser ability of these fast growing chicks to regulate their $T_core$ when exposed to heat stress, as was clearly shown on these birds' performance.

전정맥 전신마취하(下) 복강경 수술환자의 부위별 심부체온의 변화 평가 (Core Temperature Evaluation in Different Body Parts in Patients Undergoing Laparoscope Surgery under Total Intravenous Anesthesia)

  • Purpose: The trend of body temperature change during laparoscopic surgery and the most adequate site for monitoring temperature measurements have not been investigated thoroughly. In this study body temperature change during laparoscopic surgery was measured and measurements of the tympanic, esophageal, and nasopharyngeal core temperatures in surgical patients with total intravenous anesthesia were compared. Methods: From February to October 2013, 28 laparoscopic surgical patients were recruited from a tertiary hospital in Seoul. The patients' core temperature was measured 12 times at ten minute intervals from ten minutes after the beginning of endotracheal intubation. Results: Repeated measure of core temperatures indicated a significant difference according to body part (p=.033), time of measure (p<.001) and the reciprocal interaction between body part and time of measure (p<.027). The core temperatures were highest at tympany location, lowest at nasopharynx. The amount of temperature change was least for the esophagus ($36.10{\sim}36.33^{\circ}C$), followed by nasopharynx and tympany. Conclusion: The esophageal core temperature showed the highest stability followed by nasopharyngeal and tympanic temperature. Therefore, close observations are required between 10~20minutes after the beginning of the operation.

식사시의 교감-부신계 활성도와 체온 및 신체계측치와의 관련성 (Relationships between BMI, Body Temperature and Syrnpathoadrenal Activity during a Meal)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between changes in body temperature, adiposity and sympathoadrenal activity in normal weight female college students, eating an instant-noodle lunch in a laboratory setting at ambient temperatures of 22-24.8$^{\circ}C$. Preprandial epinephrine(EPI) concentration, as an indicator of adrenal activity, was inversely and significantly correlated with body weight, body mass index(BMI), and waist girth. Changes in pre- and postprandial EPI concentrations showed positive correlations with % body fat, fat mass, waist girth, hip girth, and waist/hip girth ratio(WHR). The preprandial norepinephrine (NE) concentration was negatively correlated with recovery time from the peak postprandial core temperature to the meal-start core temperature(RTST). However, the NE concentration, an indicator of sympathetic neural activity, was not related to anthropometric measurements in normal weight young women. In conclusion, adrenal activity was negatively associated with adiposity and central body fat distribution. Sympathetic activity was related to body temperature regulation capacity after a meal, but was not related to adiposity in normal weight young women. (Korean J Nutrition 31(7) 1130-1138, 1998)

Influence of Midazolam and Glycopyrrolate on Intra-operative Body Temperature in Abdominal Surgical Patients

  • Purpose: influence of benzodiazepine (midazolam)or cholinergic inhibitor (atropine or glycopyrrlate) on intra-operative body temperature remains unclear and controversial. This study compares intra-operative body temperature in 50 abdominal surgical patients under general anesthesia between the administration of midazolam and glycopyrrolate in combination, or glycopyrrolate alone. Methods: Patients who underwent abdominal surgery were recruited from September 2008 through October 2009 at Gachon University Gil hospital in incheon. Core body temperature was measured in the right ear using a tympanic membrane thermometer at induction of general anesthesia and at 1 hr, 2 hr, and 3 hr after induction. Results: There were no differences in core body temperature at any measurement point between either patient group (F=1.08, $p$=.377). Core body temperature decreased throughout the 3 hr after induction in both groups (F=9.22, $p$ <.001). Specially, core temperatures at induction of general anesthesia (p<.001), 1 hr (p<.001), 2 hr ($p$ <.001), and 3 hr ($p$ <.001) after induction were lower than before administration of midazolam and glycopyrrolate, or glycopyrrolate alone. Conclusion: We conclude that a cholinergic inhibitor (glycopyrrolate, 0.1 mg) therefore seems not to affect intra-operative body temperature of patients given a benzodiazepine (midazolam, 0.04 mg $kg^{-1}$), and not to increase body temperature in patients not given a benzodiazepine during the 3 hr after the induction of general anesthesia. Intra-operative warming therefore is needed to prevent hypothermia in surgical patients who receive pre-operative administration of midazolam and/or glycopyrrolate.

자돈의 일중 체온변화에 관한 연구 (Changes in Body Temperature of Piglets in a Day)

  • 본 실험에서는 자돈을 대상으로 비정상 체온의 판정을 위한 알고리즘 개발에 활용할 정상상황에서의 표피 (귀, 목, 머리) 및 심부 체온의 database를 구축하였다. 평균체중 46kg의 자돈 5두를 공시하여 $22.5{\pm}2.0^{\circ}C$로 설정된 이유 자돈사에 설치한 개별 케이지에 2주간 적응시킨 후, 귀, 목 및 머리의 피부온도와 심부 (피하지방) 체온, 그리고 돈사내 온도를 1 mm k-type 열전대와 National Instruments Corporation (Austin, Texas, USA)의 장치 (cDAQ-9174, NI-9214, 9214TB)를 이용하여 1분 간격으로 17일간 연속하여 측정하였다. 수집된 체온 data는 24시간 단위로 통합하여 매 시간대별 평균 및 표준편차를 산출했다. 모든 측정 site의 하루 중 체온의 변화는 오전 6시에 가장 낮은 값으로 나타났으며 이후 점점 증가하다가 14시에 가장 높은 값을 보였고 그 후 익일 오전 6시까지 서서히 떨어졌다. 이런 변화 pattern은 외부온도의 변화와 일치하였다. 심부의 체온은 $35{\sim}39^{\circ}C$의 범위로 변화가 적은 반면에 목과 머리는 각각 $32{\sim}36^{\circ}C$, $30{\sim}36^{\circ}C$이고, 귀는 $29{\sim}36^{\circ}C$로 변화 폭이 컸다. 귀의 경우 가장 낮은 값은 자돈의 활동이 가장 적은 새벽시간이었으며, 새벽시간대를 제외한다면 귀, 목, 머리의 체온은 대체적으로 같은 범위의 온도 값을, 심부는 체온의 가장 근접한 값을 나타내고 있다. 이 연구를 통해 축적된 자돈의 표피 (귀, 목, 머리)와 심부 체온의 databse는 RFID (radio frequency identification device)를 이용한 동물의 비정상 체온의 전자적 감지를 위한 알고리즘 개발에 활용 할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

수용액 매체에서 젤-케스팅 공정을 이용한 세라믹 코어 제조에 관한 연구(II) : 세라믹 코어 소결체의 물성 (Study on the fabrication of Ceramic Core using a Gel-casting Process in Aqueous Medium(II) : Physical Properties of Sintered Ceramic Core Body)

  • 수용성 매체에서 젤-케스팅 공정을 이용하여 용융실리카를 기본으로 하는 다성분계 세라믹 코어 (中子)를 제조하고, 소결조건에 따른 제반 기계적 물성과 알칼리 부식용액에 의한 용출특성을 고찰하였다. 1000cP (at $50sec^{-1}$ ) 이하의 낮은 점도를 갖는 50vol%의 고농도 다성분계 세라믹 슬림의 제조가 가능하였다. 성형체는 안정화시킨 슬림을 몰드에 부어 상온에서 겔화시킨 후 $25^{\circ}C$, 80% 상대습도 분위기 하에서 48시간동안 건조시켜 제조하였으며 건조된 성형체에는 균열이 발생하지 않았다. 세라믹 코어 성형체의 소결온도가 상승할 수록 상온강도, 겉보기 밀도, 수축률은 시편의 기공도와 역비례하여 증가하였다. 세라믹 코어 소결체의 용출속도는 동일한 온도에서 알칼리 부식용액의 농도에 의존하였으며, 소결체의 기공도가 클수록 증가하였다.
