The study was performed to investigate the effects of isoflavone and/or grape seed oil supplementation on serum and liver lipid profiles and bone strength in ovariectomized female rats. Female Spraque-Dawley rats were assigned into 4 groups of ovariectomized (O), isoflavone (0.085 mg/100 g b.w/day) in ovariectomized rats, grape seed oil in ovariectomized rats and isoflavone and/or grape seed oil in ovariectomized rats. After 8 weeks, biochemical profiles of serum, liver and bone were analyzed. Total food intakes, body weight gains and FER (food efficiency ratio) were not statistically significantly different among groups. Total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol levels in serum were decreased by fed of isoflavone and/or grape seed oils. However, crude lipid and total cholesterol contents in liver were not affect of isoflavone and/or grape seed oil. The hepatic glutathione contents were increased by isoflavone and/or grape seed oil fed. The hepatic glutathione-S-transferase activity in isoflavone and/or grape seed oil supplemented groups were higher than that O group. Bone (scapular and femur bone) dry weight, femur of max weight and bending strength were no significant difference among groups. Our finding suggest that isoflavone/grape seed oils might have potential role for serum lipid profiles improvement and bone strength in vivo.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine lifestyle, BMI, BP, and lipids profiles in male subjects and to explore the relationships among variables. Methods: A total of 148 male subjects were recruited from one life insurance company from December 1, 2005 to February 28, 2006. Data collection methods were structured questionnaire, anthropometry and serum analysis. The relationships among lifestyle, BMI, BP, and serum lipid profiles were assessed by descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and partial Pearson's correlation coefficient of variables after controlling for age, educational level, and economic status. Results: The mean BMI of the participants was relatively high as 25.38(range: 18.38 - 32.83). The differences of serum lipid profiles according to age, educational level, and economic status were significant. 'Use of caffeine and drugs'(r = -.187, p < .05) and 'consciousness of safety'( r= -.200, p < .05) was negatively related to BMI. Higher score of 'type of personality' domain was correlated with lower systolic BP(r = -.221, p < .01) and lower diastolic BP(r = -.195, p < .05) and was positively correlated with HDL(r = .191, p < .05). Conclusion: 'Use of caffeine and drugs', 'consciousness of safety' and 'type of personality' of lifestyle as well as 'dietary habit' and 'exercise' played a key role in circulatory disease.
A variety of studies show that a centraized rather than a generalized pattern of subcutaneous fat distribution is more directly associated with disorers of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, as possibly hypertension, This study was an attempt to observe the relationship of body fat distribution, blood lipids, blood pressure and exercise in 85 healthy men and women. Within this group there was a gradation of fat distribution progressing from LBSO and UBSO defined on the basis of WHR. This paper reports the relationship of body fat distribution defined by WHR to plasma glucose, lipids, blood pressure, and exercise in this population. Although the obesity indices(RBW and BMI) were slightly higher in the UBSO group, significant differences existed between UBSO and LBSO groups with respect to WHR blood pressure, and total cholesterol concentration in female. WHR values were substantially different and this was primarily due to greater degrees of differences in waist as opposed to hips circum ference. Although no significant differences existed between UBSO and LBSO groups with respect to age, body weight, and hips circumference, energy intake, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and WHR values were substantially different in male. Positive, significant correlations were found between WHR and both systolic and diastolic blood pressure and between WHR and the total plasma cholesterol concentration and age. When 26 pairs of exercise and nonexercise groups were matched according to sex, age and body weight, blood pressure and blood lipids were significantly lower in the exercise groups than those in the nonexercise groups. In conclusion, these findings suggest that an altered blood lipid profiles will manifast in men and women with upper body obese. Furthermore these findings suggest that exercise and physical activity may be beneficial for controlling blood lipids and blood pressure in healthy adults.
Increase of blood viscosity significantly changes the flow resistance and wall shear stress which are related with cardiovascular diseases. For measurement of blood viscosity, microfluidic method has proposed by monitoring pressure between sample and reference flows in the downstream of a microchannel with two inlets. However, it is difficult to apply this method to unknown flow conditions. To measure blood viscosity under unknown flow conditions, a microfluidic method based on micro particle image velocimetry(PIV) is proposed in this study. Flow rate in the microchannel was estimated by assuming velocity profiles represent mean value along channel depth. To demonstrate the measurement accuracy of flow rate, the flow rates measured at the upstream and downstream of a T-shaped microchannel were compared with injection flow rate. The present results indicate that blood viscosity could be reasonably estimated according to shear rate by measuring the interfacial width and flow rate of blood flow. This method would be useful for understanding the effects of hemorheological features on the cardiovascular diseases.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity and the features of metabolic syndrome, and differences according to sex in patients diagnosed cerebral infarction. The study group comprised 61 patients over age 30 who were diagnosed cerebral infarction, accompanied with metabolic syndrome. The brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity, blood pressure, lipid profiles, fasting blood glucose, body mass index were measured. Also we checked past history of patients. Then we analyzed the association between brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity and the features of metabolic syndrome. Pearson correlation analysis reflected the variables affecting the brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity as follows : Age, SBP(systolic blood pressure), DBP(diastolic blood pressure), FBS(fasting blood glucose) were positively correlated. As a result of regression analysis, in patients with cerebral infarction accompanied with metabolic syndrome, the brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity is affected by age to men, SBP, FBS, DBP to women. The brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity is not affected by the components of metabolic syndrome, except blood pressure, FBS, in patients with ischemic stroke.
The mechanisms by which iron is absorbed are similar to those of divalent metals, particularly manganese, lead, and cadmium. These metals, however, show different toxicokinetics in relation to menarche or menopause, although their interaction with iron is the same. This review focuses on the kinetics of these three toxic metals (manganese, lead, and cadmium) in relation to menarche, pregnancy, and menopause. The iron-manganese interaction is the major factor determining sex-specific differences in blood manganese levels throughout the whole life cycle. The effects of estrogen overshadow the association between iron deficiency and increased blood lead concentrations, explaining why women, despite having lower ferritin concentrations, have lower blood lead concentrations than men. Iron deficiency is associated with elevated cadmium levels in premenopausal women, but not in postmenopausal women or men; these findings indicate that sex-specific differences in cadmium levels at older ages are not due to iron-cadmium interactions, and that further studies are required to identify the source of these differences. In summary, the potential causes of sex-specific differences in the blood levels of manganese, lead, and cadmium differ from each other, although all these three metals are associated with iron deficiency. Therefore, other factors such as estrogen effects, or absorption rate as well as iron deficiency, should be considered when addressing environmental exposure to toxic metals and sex-specific differences in the blood levels of these metals.
The purpose of this study was to confirm that regular physical exercise habit and calcium intake play a role reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseae, particularly to confrim that regular exercise is important in reducing serum lipid levels. Subjects were classified into regular exercise group(more than 3 times/wk, more than 30 min per exercise) and non-regular exercise group. A convenient frequency method was used to assess the nutritional intake of subjects. Anthropometric measurement such as bodyweight and hight, and blood pressure were measured. There was no significant difference between nonexercisers and exerciser in energy intake, calcium intake and blood lipid levels. The strength of frequency of exercise may not by adequate to modify lipid profiles in premenopausal woman with normal lipid level, Although we found no significant difference in blood lipid levels, this result does not imply there are no benefits of exercise subjects. There were no signigicant correlations between age or weight with blood lipids in regular exercise group, while there were significant positive correlations between age of weight with blood lipids in non-regular exercise group. The levels of serum cholesterol, and triglyceride, blood pressure and atherogenic index increased with age in nonexercise women, Especially, atherogenic index was lower in regular exercise group. The blood pressure in nonexercise group was significantly higher than that in regular exercise group There was a highly significant negative correlation between calcium intake and blood pressure in nonexercise women, There was a highly significant negative correlation between calcium intake and blood pressure in nonexercise women. The results suggest that increased habitual physical activity and calcium intake may have desirable effects on serum lipid levels and blood pressure in premenopausal women.(Korean J Nutrition 34(1):62-68, 2001)

The echo signal on ultrasonic transducer is a mixed signal from tissues, blood vessel walls, blood cells and noise. In this mixed-signal, the signal reflected from tissues and blood vessel walls is called clutter. It is necessary to extract pure blood signal from this mixed-signal, when measuring blood flow velocity with medical ultrasonic system The quality of measured blood flow velocity is highly dependent on sufficient attenuation of the clutter signals. In this paper, we suggest a clutter rejection method using ICA For simulation, the echo signals are generated by Field n ultrasonic simulation program In this echo signals, independent signals are separated by using ICA Then the blood signal is obtained from the separated signals. Blood flow velocity is measured by 2D autocorrelation method. We compare ICA clutter rejection method with PCA-based eigen filter method using both measured blood flow velocity profiles by 2D autocorrelation. In simulation results, ICA clutter rejection method can be better applied measuring blood flow velocity in noisy echo signals.

${\alpha}$-Lipoic acid and L-carnosine are powerful antioxidants and are often used as a health supplement and as an ergogenic aid. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of ${\alpha}$-lipoic acid and/or L-carnosine supplementation on antioxidant activity in serum, skin, and liver of rats and blood lipid profiles for 6 weeks. Four treatment groups received diets containing regular rat chow diet (control, CON), 0.5% ${\alpha}$-lipoic acid (ALA), 0.25% ${\alpha}$-lipoic acid+0.25% L-carnosine (ALA+LC), or 0.5% L-carnosine (LC). Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and lipid peroxidation products, malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations, were analyzed in serum, skin, and liver. Blood lipid profiles were measured, including triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Skin and liver SOD activities of the ALA and LC groups were higher than those of the CON group (P<0.05), but serum SOD activity was higher only in the LC group compared to that in the CON group (P<0.05). Additionally, only liver GSH-Px activity in the LC group was higher than that of the CON and the other groups. Serum and skin MDA levels in the ALA and LC groups were lower than those in the CON group (P<0.05). Serum TG and TC in the ALA and ALA+LC groups were lower than those in the CON and LC groups (P<0.05). The HDL-C level in the LC group was higher than that in any other group (P<0.05). LDL-C level was lower in the ALA+LC and LC groups than that in the CON group (P<0.05). Thus, ${\alpha}$-lipoic acid and L-carnosine supplementation increased antioxidant activity, decreased lipid peroxidation in the serum, liver, and skin of rats and positively modified blood lipid profiles.
Objective: We investigated the temporal expression profiles of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) and mRNA in the peripheral blood of pigs during development and identified the lncRNAs that are related to the blood-based immune system. Methods: Peripheral blood samples were obtained from the pigs at 0, 7, 28, and 180 days and 2 years of age. RNA sequencing was performed to survey the lncRNA and mRNA transcriptomes in the samples. Short time-series expression miner (STEM) was used to show temporal expression patterns in the mRNAs and lncRNAs. Gene ontology and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes analyses were performed to assess the genes' biological relevance. To predict the functions of the identified lncRNAs, we extracted mRNAs that were nearby loci and highly correlated with the lncRNAs. Results: In total of 5,946 lncRNA and 12,354 mRNA transcripts were identified among the samples. STEM showed that most lncRNAs and mRNAs had similar temporal expression patterns during development, indicating the expressional correlation and functional relatedness between them. The five stages were divided into two classes: the suckling period and the late developmental stage. Most genes were expressed at low level during the suckling period, but at higher level during the late stages. Expression of several T-cell-related genes increased continuously during the suckling period, indicating that these genes are crucial for establishing the adaptive immune system in piglets at this stage. Notably, lncRNA TCONS-00086451 may promote blood-based immune system development by upregulating nuclear factor of activated T-cells cytoplasmic 2 expression. Conclusion: This study provides a catalog of porcine peripheral blood-related lncRNAs and mRNAs and reveals the characteristics and temporal expression profiles of these lncRNAs and mRNAs during peripheral blood development from the newborn to adult stages in pigs.
