Comparison of Growth Characteristics and Ginsenoside Content of Ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) Cultivated with Greenhouse and Traditional Shade Facility (비닐하우스와 관행재배 인삼의 생육특성 및 진세노사이드 함량 비교)

  • Growth characteristics, root yield and ginsenoside contents of 3-year-old ginseng in greenhouse shaded by $30^{\circ}$ sloped-curtain made of aluminum were compared to traditional shade facility in order to develop cultural practice for organic ginseng. Light transmittance ratio in greenhouse with $30^{\circ}$ sloped-curtain shade was distinctly lower than that of traditional shade from sunrise to 9 a.m., while its ratio in greenhouse was higher than traditional shade since 9 a.m. due to the reflection of light. Air temperature of greenhouse was $1.3^{\circ}C$ higher than that of traditional shade on the first ten days of August due to more reflected light. Root yield of greenhouse was 44% higher than that of traditional cultivation because of the inflow of reflected light and the decrease of disease of Alternaria and Anthracnose by blocking rainfall. Dry matter partitioning ratio of rhizome and lateral root were increased in ginseng cultivated at greenhouse due to longer survival time in leaf than traditional cultivation. Total ginsenoside contents cultivated at greenhouse was decreased in the part of taproot, while it was increased in the part of lateral and fine root compare to traditional cultivation. Individual ginsenoside contents between greenhouse and traditional cultivation showed significant difference more frequent in fine root than taproot and lateral root. Total ginsenoside contents including $Rb_1$, $Rb_2$, Rc, Rd, Re, Rf, $Rg_1$, and $Rg_2$ in whole root of 3-year-old ginseng did not showed significant difference by greenhouse and traditional cultivation.

  • Polyorganosiloxane modified polyurethane (PDMS-PU) polymers were prepared from copolymerization of ${\alpha}$,${\omega}$-hydroxypropyl terminated polyorganosiloxane with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), polypropylene glycol (PPG), and 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid (DMPA). Hydrophobic polyorganosiloxane was introduced in polyurethane main chain as soft segment block unit. The isocyanate groups in PDMS-PU block copolymer was blocked with 2-butanon oxime and obtained PDMS-PU dispersions in water by neutralizing with triethylamine (TEA). The deblocking temperature of PDMS-PU polymer was measured from thermal analysis. The good stability of the PDMS-PU dispersion was obtained by dispersing into water. PDMS-PU prepolymers were prepared with various contents of DMPA under [NCO]/[OH] = 1.12~1.53 equivalent ratio. Increasing DMPA from 7.2, 13.4, and 18.7 mole% in preparation of PDMS-PU polymer, particle sizes were decreased from 156, 100, 65 dnm. Also contact angle and adhesive strength were measured.

Improvement of the MPEG-4 Still Image Compression Using Visually Weighted Quantizers (인간 시각 양자화기를 이용한 MPEG-4 정지영상 압축 방법의 성능 개선)

  • In this paper, we investigate on the techniques for still image compression based on the wavelet transform, which will be adopted as a part of the MPEG-4 compression standards. Also we propose an effective still image compression technique, which is simpler than the MPEG-4 compression method and is improved by using a visually weighted quantizer based to HVS(Human Visual System), Simulations are carried out and compared with the algorithm proposed in MPEG-4. The simulation results show that the proposed method in this paper gives much better image quality than that of the method in MPEG-4. Also, except the case where the compression ratio is high, it shows that the proposed method has lower in complexity and provides a better subjective and objective image quality than EZW in most cases. Since wavelet transform well reflects HVS, the compressed image rarely causes blocking artifact compared with JPEG, and in most cases, it shows considerable quality improvement over JPEG.

A Robust License Plate Extraction Method for Low Quality Images (저화질 영상에서 강건한 번호판 추출 방법)

  • This paper proposes a robust license plate extraction method from images taken under unconstrained environments. Utilization of the color and the edge information in complementary fashion makes the proposed method deal with not only various lighting conditions, hilt blocking artifacts frequently observed in compressed images. Computational complexity is significantly reduced by applying Hough transform to estimate the skew angle, and subsequent do-skewing procedure only to the candidate regions. The true plate region is determined from the candidates under examination using clues including the aspect ratio, the number of zero crossings from vertical scan lines, and the number of connected components. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using compressed images collected under various realistic circumstances. The experimental results show 94.9% of correct license plate extraction rate.

Adsorption and Antibacterial Properties of Metal Treated Activated Carbon (금속 처리된 활성탄소의 흡착과 항균특성)

  • The Ag-treated activated carbon was prepared by the impregnation of Ag on the home made activated carbon. We investigated the nitrogen adsorption property, surface structure, and antibacterial activity of the carbon. The BET surface areas of Ag impregnated activated carbon are distributed to $740-1112.2m^2/g$ region. The results of nitrogen adsorption property show that BET surface areas move gradually to lower value with increasing $AgNO_3$ mole concentration. From the SEM results, we observed window blocking effect for micropores of external surface of adsorbent by Ag impregnation. Escherichia coli which is a kind of colon bacillus was used as bacteria for antibacterial test. From these results, we also observed that activity increase gradually to larger range with increasing $AgNO_3$ mole ratio.

A Method to Prevent CO Poisoning from Instantaneous Water Heaters (순간 가스온수기의 CO 중독사고 예방에 관한 연구)

  • Instantaneous water heater being not properly installed and not adequately maintained may produce fatal accidents due to carbon monoxide poisoning and suffocation. Insufficient supply of air into the gas appliance for complete burning of the fuel or blocking the outlet of the combustion gas could be a cause to increase carbon monoxide concentration in the exhaust gas of the gas appliance. In this work, the experiments are done with a collected instantaneous water heater using in domestic and the concentration of oxygen near the gas appliance and carbon monoxide in exhaust gas are observed to investigate the risk of instantaneous water heater. The concentration of oxygen near the gas appliance is reduced until 17.7% for the ratio of the ventilation area and floor area being 3.5%. If the outlet of combustion gas is blocked, the carbon monoxide concentration is steeply increasing more than 4,000ppm. Therefore, periodic checking the outlet of combustion gas is more important than vent area to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Zero-Watermarking based on Chaotic Side Match Vector Quantization (무질저한 SMVQ 기반의 제로-워터마킹)

  • Digital watermarking is a technology for preventing illegal copying, for protecting intellectual property rights and copyrights, and for suggesting grounds of the ownership by inserting watermarks into digital contents. Generally speaking, watermarking techniques cannot escape from data distortion and quality degradation due to the watermark insertion. In order to overcome the shortcoming, zero-watermarking techniques which do not change the original data have been proposed recently. This paper proposes CSMVQ(Chaotic SMVQ), a zero-watermarking system for SMVQ(Side Match Vector Quantization) which shows better compression ratio and quality and less blocking effect than VQ(Vector Quantization). In SMVQ, compression progresses from left top to right bottom in order to use the information of the two neighbor blocks, so it is impossible to insert watermarks chaotically. In the process of encoding, CSMVQ dynamically considers the information of the (1 to 4) neighbor blocks already encoded. Therefore, watermark can be inserted into digital contents in chaotic way. Experimental results show that the image quality compressed by CSMVQ is better than that of SMVQ and the inserted watermark is robust against some common attacks.

Hydraulic conductivity estimation by considering the existence of piles: A case study

  • Estimation of hydraulic parameters is a critical step during design of foundation dewatering works. When many piles are installed in an aquifer, estimation of the hydraulic conductivity should consider the blocking of groundwater seepage by the piles. Based on field observations during a dewatering project in Shanghai, hydraulic conductivities are back-calculated using a numerical model considering the actual position of each pile. However, it is difficult to apply the aforementioned model directly in field due to requirement to input each pile geometry into the model. To develop a simple numerical model and find the optimal hydraulic conductivity, three scenarios are examined, in which the soil mass containing the piles is considered to be a uniform porous media. In these three scenarios, different sub-regions with different hydraulic conductivities, based on either automatic inverted calculation, or on effective medium theory (EMT), are established. The results indicate that the error, in the case which determines the hydraulic conductivity based on EMT, is less than that determined in the automatic inversion case. With the application of EMT, only the hydraulic conductivity of the soil outside the pit should be inverted. The soil inside the pit with its piles is divided into sub-regions with different hydraulic conductivities, and the hydraulic conductivity is calculated according to the volume ratio of the piles. Thus, the use of EMT in numerical modelling makes it easier to consider the effect of piles installed in an aquifer.

Obscene Material Searching Method in WWW (WWW상에서 음란물 검색기법)

  • World-Wide Web(WWW) is a protocol for changing information exchanges which is central to text documents in the existing network to make a multimedia data exchanges. It is possible for a beginner to search and access data which he wants to find as data were stored in the form of hypertext. The easiness for searching and accessing the multimedia data in WWW makes a important role for obscene materials to be toward generalization and multimedia and occurs social problems for them to be commercialized, while other researchers have actively studied the way to block effectively the site providing obscene materials for solving such problems. This paper presents and implements the blocking method for the sites having obscene material as it effectively search them. The proposed model was based on Link-Based information retrieval method and proved that it accomplished more efficient retrieval of relevant documents than probabilistic model when compared the one with the other which is known to generate the most correct results. The improvements in the average recall and precision ratio were shown as 12% and 8% respectively. Especially, the retrieval capability of relevant documents which include non-text data and have a few links increased highly.

QoS-based RWA Algorithm for providing QoS Services in the Next Generation Internet based on DWDM (DWDM 기반의 차세대 인터넷에서 QoS서비스 제공을 위한 QoS-based RWA 알고리즘)

  • In the next generation Internet(NGI) based on dense wavelength division multiplexing(DWDM) technology, QoS RWA considering various QoS parameters of DWDM networks is regard as one of the key issues in providing real-time multimedia services. However, finding a qualified path meeting multi-constraints is generally NP-complete problem. It is insufficient for QoS RWA researches in DWDM networks that must consider QoS parameter as well as wavelength-continuity constraint. This paper proposes qualified path routing (QPR) algorithm with minimum computation and implementation complexity based on flooding method to accomplish QoS routing and wavelength assignment (RWA). We also introduce a QoS-based RWA mechanism considering multi-constraint such as optical signal quality attributes, survivability and wavelength-continuity constraint combined with proposed routing algorithm. Simulation results show superior efficiency of the proposed algorithms in terms of blocking probability, routing overhead and survivability ratio.
