  • Friction and wear properties of MoS$_2$ bonded films were studied using the Falex testing machine, and their properties were evaluated in terms of the life and the load carrying capacity of the films. MoS$_2$ bonded films were formulated from the mixtures of MoS$_2$ solid particles and epoxyphenol resin, and they were applied onto AISI 4130 steel surface by dipping method to form lubricating bonded films. The results of the life and the load carrying capacity of the films showed that films were mainly affected by the surface temperature arisen from the frictional heat at the contact surface. To obtain enhanced tribological properties of the films, various combinations of solid lubricants and additives with a basic polymer resin were attempted and evaluated. The effects of surface pretreatment, such as sand blast or Zn-phosphating, were also investigated.

  • Since progressive collapse of tall buildings can cause enormous damage, it should be considered during the design phase of tall buildings. The progressive collapse analysis of tall buildings using finite element methods is almost impossible due to the vast amount of computing time. In this paper, applied element method was evaluated as an alternative to the finite element method. Reduced DOFs modeling technique was proposed to enable the progressive collapse analysis of tall buildings. The reduced DOFs model include only the part which is subjected to direct damage from blast load and the structural properties such as mass, transferred load and stiffness of excluded parts are accumulated into the top story of the reduced DOFs model. The proposed modeling technique was applied to the progressive collapse analysis of 20-story RC building using three collapse scenarios. The reduced DOFs model showed similar collapse behavior to the whole model while the computing time was reduced by 30%. The proposed modeling technique can be utilized in the progressive collapse analysis of tall buildings due to abnormal loads.

  • In field fabrication of steel members, the oversize hole is frequently required due to reaming and mismatching. But, there are no provisions and investigations about oversize hole in the Korean specifications. So, in this study, the tension test of friction type high-tention bolted joints is performed with parameters of bolt hole size, surface treatment and tightening force, and investigate the effect of slip behavior with those parameters. From the results, the enough tightening force is needed to obtain some degree slip load in shot blast treatment case, although tightening force is reduced somewhat, it is no problem to guarantee slip load in zincrich primer case. The slip behavior of joints with oversize hole(26mm) is similar to the slip behavior of joints with hole of nominal size.

  • In this study, tests were carried out to find out a method to ensure the fire resistance performance of high-performance non-refractory coating CFT columns. For the high performance concrete fabrication with 100MPa, blast furnace slag(BS) and steel and nylon fibers were used. It was found that the partial replacement with BS improved the fire resistance performance of the concrete. Based on the results of lab tests, the large fire test was conducted. For this test, the CFTs with the size of ${\phi}500{\times}4,200mm$ and the reinforcement of SS 400 steel were prepared and they were subjected to a loading condition. It was found that as the level of load increased, the level of fire resistance decreased. For example, In with the loading condition of 2000kN the CFT could resist the fire for over 240 minutes, whereas, with the loading condition of 3,000kN and 4000kN applying to equivalent CFTs, the resisting time against fire were 184 minutes, and 120 minutes, respectively.

  • In this study, the resistance of various reinforced concrete (RC) slabs subjected to contact detonation was assessed. In order to enhance the blast resistance, fibers and external FRP sheets were reinforced to RC slabs. In the experiment, the $2,000{\times}1,000{\times}100mm$ sized RC slabs were fabricated using normal concrete (NC), steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC), polyvinyl alcohol fiber reinforced cementitious composite (PVA FRCC), and ultra-high performance cementitious composites (UHPCC). The damage levels of RC slabs subjected to contact detonation were evaluated by measuring the diameter and depth of crater, spall and breach. The experimental results were compared to the analyzed data using LS-DYNA program and three different prediction equations. The diameter and depth of crater, spall and breach were able to be predicted using LS-DYNA program approximately. The damage process of RC slabs under blast load was also well expressed. Three prediction equations suggested by other researchers had limitations to apply in terms of empirical approaches, therefore it needs further research to set more analytical considerations.

  • In this study, eleven reinforced concrete beams, without stirrup, using high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar with ground granulated blast furnace slag(SHF Series, SHFSC Series) and standard specimens without or with stirrup(SSS, BSS) were constructed and tested under monotonic loading. Experimental programs were carried out to improve and evaluate the shear performance of such test specimens, such as the load-displacement, the failure mode, the maximum strength, and shear strength. All the specimens were modeled in scale-down size. Test results showed that test specimens(SHF Series, SHFSC Series) was increased respectively the shear strength carrying capacity by 26%, 20% and the ductility capacity by 5.27, 5.75 times in comparison with the standard specimen without stirrup(SSS). And the specimens(SHF Series, SHFSC Series) showed enough ductile behavior and stable flexural failure.

  • Clamping force of a high strength bolt is reduced by a certain period of time after the initial set-up. In case of special treatments on faying surfaces such as protective coating, clamping force is relaxed more severely. Tests for slip critical joints subject to various faying surface parameters were conducted. Five different surface treatments were tested including mill scale surface, blast surface, rust surface and coated surfaces. Each specimen was composed of F10T M20 of high strength bolts and steel plates. Based on the result of slip coefficient test, blast treatment surface showed 0.59, rust treatment surface showed 0.54 and inorganic zinc treatment surface exhibited 0.44. Clean mill treatment surface and red lead paint treatment surface were 0.23, 0.21 respectively. It is identified that the slip coefficient in Korean structural design guide should be determined for various surface conditions. Subsequently from long term relaxation test of ASTM A 490 high strength bolts, relaxation of no-coated surfaces such as blast, clean mill, rust treatment, the loss of initial clamping load was 10.5%, 13.6% and 7.9% for 1,000 hours, while the loss of initial clamping force was reached as 15.0%, 18.7% more than the required redundancy 10% in case of inorganic zinc and red lead painted treatment. It is required that the limit of relaxation on coated faying surface should be established separately for various surfaces.

  • The necessity for ground reinforcement of structures has been increasing in South Korea because buildings have encountered constructional problems such as inclined structures and collapses caused by earthquakes or differential settlement of the foundations. With regard to a ground reinforcement method, an increasing number of high-strength concrete piles have been used based on their advantages, including a wide range of penetration depth and a high load-bearing capacity. However, problems such as the destruction of a pile head during on-site placement work can occur when the pile has insufficient strength. For this reason, the strength of such piles should be managed more thoroughly. Thus, this study analyzed the strength properties of high-strength concrete piles using blast furnace slag (BFS) powder as a cement replacement, which was generated as an industrial byproduct. The analysis results indicated that the compression strength of the concrete piles increased when 10% to 20% of the cement was replaced with ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS). In addition, the compression strength of the concrete piles was calculated to be 80.6 MPa when 20% of the cement was replaced with GGBS, which was greater by 5% than that of an ordinary Portland cement (OPC) specimen.

  • In this study, a demolition analysis code using the adaptively shifted integration (ASI)-Gauss technique, which describes structural member fracture by shifting the numerical integration point to an appropriate position and simultaneously releasing the sectional forces in the element, is developed. The code was verified and validated by comparing the predicted results with those of several experiments. A demolition planning tool utilizing the concept of a key element index, which explicitly indicates the contribution of each structural column to the vertical load capacity of the structure, is also develped. Two methods of selecting specific columns to efficiently demolish the whole structure are demonstrated: selecting the columns from the largest index value and from the smallest index value. The demolition results are confirmed numerically by conducting collapse analyses using the ASI-Gauss technique. The numerical results suggest that to achieve a successful demolition, a group of columns with the largest key element index values should be selected when explosives are ignited in a simultaneous blast, whereas those with the smallest should be selected when explosives are ignited in a sequence, with a final blast set on a column with large index value.

  • In our study, the PTFE nozzle ablation in the high-voltage self-blast type $SF_6$ gas circuit breaker was investigated. The test circuit breaker has the structure that the pin electrode is moving and the pressure reservoir volume and the dimension is almost same as commercial 145kv 40kA circuit breaker for similar result in real circuit breaker. The variation of current and arcing time was the range of $36kA_{rms}$(symmetry) - $40kA_{rms}$(asymmetry) and 10-16 ms. From the measured data the tendecy of the mass loss of the nozzle to current load and arc energy was estimated. In this process, the distance from the arc to nozzle(PTFE) surface, area which was exposed to arc and stroke contour was considered. These results will be used to enhance the accuracy of the computational fluid dynamics analysis in circuit breaker and estimate the residual life time of a circuit breaker.
