The purpose of this study is to evaluate freezing-thawing and surface scaling resistance in order to examine the frost durability of concrete in a chloride-inherent environment. The mixing design for this study is as follows: 3 water binder ratios of 0.37, 0.42, and 0.47; 2-ingredient type concrete (50% OPC concrete and 50% ground granulated blast-furnace slag), and 3-ingredient type concrete (50% OPC concrete, 15% fly ash, and 35% ground granulated blast-furnace slag). As found in this study, the decrease of durability was much more noticeable in combined deterioration through both salt damage and frost damage than in a single deterioration through either ofthese; when using blast-furnace slag in freezing-thawing seawater, the frost durability and surface deterioration resistance was evaluated as higher than when using OPC concrete. BF 50% concrete, especially, rather than BFS35%+FA15%, had a notable effect on resistance to chloride penetration and freezing/expansion. It has been confirmed that surface deterioration can be evaluated through a quantitative analysis of scaling, calculated from concrete's underwater weight and surface-dry weight as affected by the freezing-thawing of seawater.

A self-blast type gas circuit breaker has been studied in this study to improve efficiency of interrupting performance of short line fault(SLF). Hot gas flows of gas circuit breaker have been simulated to evaluate interruption performance using CFD. Design parameters such as various types of expansion chamber and nozzles are suggested by using simulation results. Simulated results and experimental ones are compared with previous (ones that of in under development and with capacitor) GCB. Modified new shape of an expansion chamber and nozzle has been suggested to improve the efficiency of gas flow and to provide guidelines for designing self-blast breaker with a higher interruption capability.

In tunnel excavation by blast beneath the surface structures in urban area, the characteristics of ground vibration induced by blast and its influence on surface structures are analyzed by the field test and the numerical analysis on dynamic behaviors of the structure. According to the field test on the propagating characteristics of blast vibration through the rock mass and the concrete foundation pile. the attenuation index of peak particle velocity with distance shows the range of 1.7∼2.0 for the rock mass and the range of 2.0∼2.3 for the concrete pile. This shows that the blast vibration reduces more rapidly in the concrete pile. It is known from the numerical analysis on dynamic behavior of the structure that the coefficient of response, velocity ratio of structure response to input wave, is different according to the story of the structure. It can be said from this research that the characteristics of the ground vibration and the dynamic behavior of the structure should be well evaluated and be considered as important factors for safe blasting design especially in underground excavation at shallow depth in urban area.

Hydrogen is gaining attention as a sustainable and renewable energy source, potentially replacing fossil fuels. Its high diffusivity, wide flammable range, and low ignition energy make it prone to ignition even with minimal friction, potentially leading to fire and explosion risks. Workplaces manage ignition risks by classifying areas with explosive atmospheres. However, the effective installation of a blast wall can significantly limit the spread of hydrogen, thereby enhancing workplace safety. To optimize the wall installation of this barrier, we employed the response surface methodology (RSM), considering variables such as wall distance, height, and width. We performed 17 simulations using the Box-Behnken design, conducted using FLACS software. This process yielded two objective functions: explosion likelihood near the barrier and explosion overpressure affecting the blast wall. We successfully achieved the optimal solution using multi-objective optimization for these two functions. We validated the optimal solution through verification simulations to ensure reliability, maintaining a margin of error of 5%. We anticipated that this method would efficiently determine the most effective installation of a blast wall while enhancing workplace safety.

Frequent terror or military attack by explosion, impact, fire accidents have occurred recently. These attacks and incidents raised public concerns and anxiety of potential terrorist attacks on important infrastructures. However, structural behavioral researches on prestressed concrete (PSC) infrastructures such as Prestressed Concrete Containment Vessel (PCCV) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) storage tanks under extreme loading are significantly lacking at this time. Also, researches on possible secondary fire scenarios after terror and bomb explosion has not been performed yet. Therefore, a study on PSC structural behavior from an blast-induced fire scenario was undertaken. To evaluate the blast-fire combined resistance capacity and its protective performance of bi-directional unbonded PSC member, blast-fire tests were carried out on $1,400mm{\times}1,000mm{\times}300mm$ PSC specimens. Blast loading tests were performed by the detonation of 25 kg ANFO explosive charge at 1.0 m standoff distance. Also, fire and blast-fire combined loading were tested using RABT fire loading curve. The test results are discussed in detail in the paper. The results can be used as basic research references for related research areas, which include protective design simulation under blast-fire combined loading.

Steel-concrete single-leaf blast-resistant doors, having steel box and slab inside, are installed on the wall using supporting members such as hinges and latches. Several studies have been conducted on their deflection behavior in the same direction as that of the blast pressure, but studies on their deflection behavior in the opposite direction, that is, studies on negative deflection behavior are relatively insufficient. In this study, we conducted a parameter analysis using finite element analysis on blast-resistant doors, on their rebound behavior in the negative deflection phase. Results revealed that the plastic deformation of the door, and the change in momentum and kinetic energy during rebound, were major factors influencing the rebound behavior. Greater rebound force was developed on the supporting members in the impulsive region, than in the quasi-static region; due to the characteristics in the impulsive region, where the kinetic energy developed relatively greater than the strain energy. In the design process, it is necessary to consider excessive deformation that could occur in the supporting members as the rebound behavior progresses. Additionally, it was found that in the case of steel-concrete blast doors, the rebound force increased relatively more, when the effects of both rebound and negative blast pressure contributed to the negative deflection of the door. Since conditions for the occurrence of this superposition effect could vary depending on structural characteristics and explosion conditions, further investigation may be required on this topic.
Explosive blasting utilizes the energy produced from the explosion of explosive materials. Since the black powder, the first type of explosive, was invented, various types of explosives have been developed until a recent emulsion explosive which is powerful as well as safe in use. The detonators continue to be developed from safety fuse to the recent electronic detonators which allow extremely accurate and flexible control of delay time. However, the good explosives and detonators do not always lead to the good blast results. It entirely depends on the blast engineer. It is necessary to develop the empirical or theoretical models based on the field experience and sound theoretical algorithm. Such models would be very useful for blast design and, furthermore, provide the idea of further technical development. This paper introduces some models used in explosive blasting and attention to be paid for field application.
In a course of the process for a lead optimization of 2-imino-l,3-thiazolines 1 which show a selective in vivo antifungal activity against rice blast, new compounds 2 in which C-5 was substituted by methyl group of the lead compound were synthesized and tested for the biological activity. Bromination of $\beta$-keto ester 7 followed by the reaction with thiourea and hydrolysis gave 2-imino-5-methyl-l,3-thiazoline carboxylic acid 3. Coupling reactions of 3 with aniline derivatives afforded 17 kinds of the corresponding 2-imino-5-methyl-l,3-thiazoline carboxanilides 2. Their in vivo antifungal activity against rice blast was weaker than that of 1, indicating that the in vivo antifungal activity of 2-imino-l,3-thiazolines was affected by the substituent at C-5. These results would be an important data for the molecular design in the lead optimization process of this series.
Reinforced concrete (RC) columns are crucial in building structures and they are of higher vulnerability to terrorist threat than any other structural elements. Thus it is of great interest and necessity to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the possible responses of RC columns when exposed to high intensive blast loads. The primary objective of this study is to derive analytical formulas to assess vulnerability of RC columns using an advanced numerical modelling approach. This investigation is necessary as the effect of blast loads would be minimal to the RC structure if the explosive charge is located at the safe standoff distance from the main columns in the building and therefore minimizes the chance of disastrous collapse of the RC columns. In the current research, finite element model is developed for RC columns using LS-DYNA program that includes a comprehensive discussion of the material models, element formulation, boundary condition and loading methods. Numerical model is validated to aid in the study of RC column testing against the explosion field test results. Residual capacity of RC column is selected as damage criteria. Intensive investigations using Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) methodology are then implemented to evaluate the influence of scaled distance, column dimension, concrete and steel reinforcement properties and axial load index on the vulnerability of RC columns. The generated empirical formulae can be used by the designers to predict a damage degree of new column design when consider explosive loads. With an extensive knowledge on the vulnerability assessment of RC structures under blast explosion, advancement to the convention design of structural elements can be achieved to improve the column survivability, while reducing the lethality of explosive attack and in turn providing a safer environment for the public.

Blast furnace revamping in steel industry is one of the most important work to complete the complicated equipment within a short period of time based on the interfaces of various types of work. P company has planned to build a Smart Tracking System based on the wireless tag system with the aim of complying with the construction period and reducing costs, ahead of the revamping of blast furnace scheduled for construction in February next year. It combines the detailed design data with the wireless recognition technology to grasp the stage status of design, storage and installation. Then, it graphically displays the location information of each member in relation to the plan and the actual status in connection with Building Information Modeling (BIM) 4D Simulation. QR Code is used as a wireless tag in order to check the receiving status of core equipment considering the characteristics of each item. Then, DB in server system is built, status information is input. By implementing BIM 4D Simulation data using DELMIA, the information on location and status is provided. As a feature of the S/W function, a function for confirming the items will be added to the cellular phone screen in order to improve the accuracy of tagging of the items. Accuracy also increases by simultaneous processing of storage and location tagging. The most significant effect of building this system is to minimize errors in construction by preventing erroneous operation of members. This system will be very useful for overall project management because the information about the position and progress of each critical item can be visualized in real time. It could be eventually lead to cost reduction of project management.
