Loading noise generated by steady aerodynamic force exerted on the rotating body surface is theoretically analyzed and its radiation characteristics is examined as a fundamental research of helicopter rotor noise. For simplicity, the force exerted on each blade is not distributed but concentrated at one point and the noise is evaluated by using Lowson' exact formula with a discussion of the physical meaning of each term in the formula. For a single point force rotating with various angular frequencies, we investigated the radiation characteristics and theoretically explained the physical behavior at near and far-field. By investigating the amplitude of acoustic pressure with various distances, we observed the different decreasing ratio at near- and far-field with the discussion of the effect of acceleration of angular frequency. Finally, the phenomenon that the noise level is reduced everywhere as the number of blade increases is explained with the suggestion of a noise reduction idea, the limitations of this study, and the future research topics.

A numerical simulation is carried out on flows in a rotating serpentine flow passage, which models a cooling passage in a gas turbine blade, by using a 3-D FVM based TURBO-D program. When it is rotating, the flow field exhibits quite different aspects due to the effect of the Coriolis force. Especially the secondary flow field appearing in the cross-sectional area is very complex because of the combined effect of the Coriolis force and the centrifugal force in the curved area. Local Nusselt numbers are also obtained based on the Reynolds analogy and compared with the published experimental data showing a good agreement. The results of the present study can be applied to the design of cooling passages of a gas turbine blade.

This study determines the selection of an appropriate jig material for the blade edge of the medical sapphire knife. The physical properties of the jig material affects the edge shape and chipping phenomenon in machining of the medical sapphire knife. If a grinding wheel is used, brittle workpieces such as sapphire are easily damaged by the propagation of cracks because the grinding force significantly increases. It is important to constantly maintain the grinding force in the grinding process of the brittle materials. The grinding force can be kept constantly by inducing the elastic deformation of the Jig material because the elastic deformation of brittle work-piece is negligibly low. The chipping phenomenon may be reduced by selecting the proper Jig material. Aluminum, copper, stainless steels and carbon steel were used as Jig materials. The experiment was conducted using a cast iron grinding wheel, which was installed on a conventional grinding machine with the ELID grinding system. The thickness and width of the chipping area were measured using an optical microscope and FE-SEM to analyze the shape of the blade edge. According to the experiment result, the chipping phenomenon decreased, and the sharp edge was formed when the jig materials with low elastic modulus were used.

In a gas-turbine engine, fan blades in flow path are confronted with many kinds of loading. The study of the excited force by the wake of struts has proposed and the possibility of fatigue failure about rotating fan blades by the excited force at the steady state is evaluated. Equations of the excited force of wakes has been derived at the steady state and the maximum pressure distributions measured at the transient state are proposed. Dynamic characteristics and the fatigue strength of fan blades by experimental test were obtained. To evaluate HCF(High Cycle Fatigue) damage of fan blades, FEM analysis was performed with a steady state harmonic response, which was followed by high cycle fatigue damage factor from goodman diagram.

The sizes of the final blades of a low-pressure (LP) steam turbine have been getting larger for the development of high-capacity power plants. They are also larger than the other blades in the same system. As a result, fatigue damage is caused by a large centrifugal force and a low natural frequency of the blade. Recently, many failure cases have been reported due to repeated turbine startups and their prolonged use. In this study, the causes and mechanism of failure of a LP turbine blade were analyzed by using a finite element method to calculate the centrifugal force, the natural frequency of a stress-stiffening effect, and the harmonic response. It was observed that the expected fatigue damage position matched the real crack position at the airfoil's leading edge, and an equivalence fatigue limit approached a notch fatigue limit.

This paper studies causes of the L-1 blade damage of a low pressure turbine, which was found during the scheduled maintenance, in 500 MW fossil power plants. Many failures of turbine blades are caused by the coupling of aerodynamic forcing with bladed-disk vibration characteristics. In this study the coupled vibration characteristics of the L-1 turbine bladed-disk in a fossil power plant is shown for the purpose of identifying the root cause of the damage and confirming equipment integrity. First, analytic and experimental modal analysis for the bladed-disk at zero rpm as well as a single blade were performed and analyzed in order to verify the finite element model, and then steady stresses, natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes, dynamic stresses were calculated for the bladed-disk under operation. Centrifugal force and steady steam force were considered in calculation of steady and dynamic stress. The proximity of modes to sources of excitation was assessed by means of an interference diagram to examine resonances. In addition, fatigue analysis was done for the dangerous modes of operation by a local strain approach. It is expected that these dynamic characteristics will be used effectively to identify the root causes of blade failures and to perform prompt maintenance.
The yaw and interference effects of blades affect aerodynamic performance of large wind turbine system significantly, thus influencing wind-induced response and stability performance of the tower-blade system. In this study, the 5MW wind turbine which was developed by Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) was chosen as the research object. Large eddy simulation on flow field and aerodynamics of its wind turbine system with different yaw angles($0^{\circ}$, $5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$) under the most unfavorable blade position was carried out. Results were compared with codes and measurement results at home and abroad, which verified validity of large eddy simulation. On this basis, effects of yaw angle on average wind pressure, fluctuating wind pressure, lift coefficient, resistance coefficient, streaming and wake characteristics on different interference zone of tower of wind turbine were analyzed. Next, the blade-cabin-tower-foundation integrated coupling model of the large wind turbine was constructed based on finite element method. Dynamic characteristics, wind-induced response and stability performance of the wind turbine structural system under different yaw angle were analyzed systematically. Research results demonstrate that with the increase of yaw angle, the maximum negative pressure and extreme negative pressure of the significant interference zone of the tower present a V-shaped variation trend, whereas the layer resistance coefficient increases gradually. By contrast, the maximum negative pressure, extreme negative pressure and layer resistance coefficient of the non-interference zone remain basically same. Effects of streaming and wake weaken gradually. When the yaw angle increases to $45^{\circ}$, aerodynamic force of the tower is close with that when there's no blade yaw and interference. As the height of significant interference zone increases, layer resistance coefficient decreases firstly and then increases under different yaw angles. Maximum means and mean square error (MSE) of radial displacement under different yaw angles all occur at circumferential $0^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$ of the tower. The maximum bending moment at tower bottom is at circumferential $20^{\circ}$. When the yaw angle is $0^{\circ}$, the maximum downwind displacement responses of different blades are higher than 2.7 m. With the increase of yaw angle, MSEs of radial displacement at tower top, downwind displacement of blades, internal force at blade roots all decrease gradually, while the critical wind speed decreases firstly and then increases and finally decreases. The comprehensive analysis shows that the worst aerodynamic performance and wind-induced response of the wind turbine system are achieved when the yaw angle is $0^{\circ}$, whereas the worst stability performance and ultimate bearing capacity are achieved when the yaw angle is $45^{\circ}$.

Generally, main factors of tool damage are cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut. The increase of those factors can cause tool breakage or worsen product quality such as machining accuracy deterioration. Those three factors are concerned with cutting force. Cutting force reaches at its maximum value when cutter blade cuts away the object directly, and it is the time when tool damages are at high probability. In this study, we detect the maximum cutting force affecting tool damage and control the maximum cutting force based on the measured peak force.

Vibration analysis of rotating blade is the main purpose of the present study. In this study, general formulation is performed for rotating shell structures including the centrifugal force, Coriolis acceleration and initial twist. Furthermore, simplified equations are derived for the case of an open cylindrical shell. Based on the concept of degenerated shell element with the Reisser-Mindlin's assumptions, the finite element method is adopted for solving the problems. In addition, it is investigated the effect of the stacking sequence of the composites on the vibration characteristics of the blade. The results are summarized for the various parameters such as the speed of rotation and pre-twist of the blade. Also, present results are compared with the previous works and experimental data.
