Changes of Hormonal Level and Blood Biochemistry Following Superovulation Treatments of Jeju Black Cow (제주 흑우에서 다배란 처리 후 호르몬 수준과 혈액 생화학치의 변화)

  • The objective of this study was to determine changes in serum hormone concentrations, blood chemical values and recovery rate of in vivo embryos during the estrous cycle following super-ovulation treatments in Jeju black cows. Superovulation was induced by subcutaneous administration of FSH twice a day for 4 days. Serum hormones were assayed by radioimmunoassay (RIA) and blood chemical values were analyzed by blood analyser system. Embryos were collected from all treated black cows using nonsurgical technique on day 7 after artificial insemination (AI). The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. The progesterone concentrations were $7.2{\pm}3.8ng/ml$ at day -11 and $0.3{\pm}0.1ng/mL$ at day 0 (Day 0 is the first day of AI). The estradiol concentrations were $10.6{\pm}4.48pg/ml$ at day -11 and $15.0{\pm}2.2pg/ml$ at day 0. The lowest level of progesterone was measured at day 0. The highest levels of estradiol was measured at day 0. 2. The blood chemical values of treated black cows were no significant differences in normal cow values. 3. Sixty two embryos were collected in 12 black cows. Among the collected embryos, 37 embryos (59.7%) could be transferred into recipients. These results would be used as the basic informations for changing patterns of hormonal level and blood biochemistry in Jeju black cow with superovulation.

Rewriting Race in Hopkins's Of One Blood; Or, the Hidden Self: "the Hidden Self," Past/Memory, Incest, and Black Female Body (홉킨스의 인종 다시쓰기-"숨겨진 자아,"과거/기억, 근친상간, 그리고 흑인여성의 몸)

  • Pauline Hopkins's Of One Blood; Or, the Hidden Self was published in the Colored American Magazine during 1902-03. As a literary experimentalist and a political protester, Hopkins uses her fiction as a medium to overcome and ameliorate the violently racialized surroundings of the turn-of-the-century America. Having been faced with racist rhetorics and theories growing on biological differences between races, Hopkins must have felt an overwhelming urgency to challenge the heritage of slavery in American history. In order to speak out her political agenda in such a milieu, she needed a new setting as well as new narrative materials for the new era. She had to move the setting from America to Africa, the ancient utopian Ethiopia; her interest in the ancient African civilization reflects both a popular African-American vision of Africa and the movement of "black nationalism" of the time. She also needed materials from nineteenthcentury sciences, the newly evolving theories of psychology and mysticism (spiritualism/mesmerism), to explore the meaning of "the hidden self" which unfolds the complex nature of Hopkin's position on race, "blood," and African-American racial subjectivity. Hopkins in the novel explores not the color line but the bloodline. Tracing the horrific legacy of incest in the history of slavery, she attempts to redefine the true racial identity of African-Americans in America and to reconstruct their past, both family and race history. At the very center of her major tropes in the novel-such as "of one blood," "the hidden self," and incest-exists female body. Black female body, though it represents the violent site of sexual body (rape and incest) in slavery, ultimately becomes a vehicle to convey and preserve the truth of racial memory/past/history for African-Americans. As a conveyor of the past, black women not just connect the past and the present but also reawaken AfricanAmericans with the legacy of the African 'pure' bloodline. Hopkins's vision here necessitates the reevaluation of black women's role in family and history, heralding the 20th-century black feminine writing. With the major tropes, Hopkins clearly suggests that the blood of (African-)Americans is unrecognizably intermixed. Although the novel ends with ambivalence and without resolution on what Africa signifies, those tropes certainly offer her a vehicle for criticizing as well as for challenging the racial reality of America.

Development of questionnaire for metabolic disease with blood stasis: A Delphi survey

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate expert opinions on the questions contained in a questionnaire for diagnosing blood stasis accompanying metabolic disorders. Methods : Two rounds of Delphi survey were conducted online targeting on one hundred Korean medicine doctors. Respondents rated the appropriateness of the 30 questions in diagnosing metabolic disorder on a five-point scale, anchored at '5 = very appropriate', '4 = appropriate', '3 = somewhat appropriate', '2 = inappropriate', and '1 = very inappropriate'. Results : The mean score on 30 questions of first and second Delphi survey was 3.26 points and 3.31 points, respectively. The ranking of the top 10 questions that were rated as appropriate for diagnosing blood stasis accompanying metabolic disorder were 'sublingual varices', 'reddish black tongue', 'reddish black gum', 'reddish black lips', ''dark purple palatal mucosa and venous edema', 'night pain, 'ecchymosis of the tongue', 'piercing pain', 'ecchymosis of the skin' and 'prolonged numbness'. Conclusions : The experts agreed that three of the most typical symptoms of blood stasis and the conditions of capillary vessels in the tongue or the oral cavity were highly associated with metabolic disorder, whereas the questions related to abdominal pain lacked an association with metabolic disorders.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the biological effects of blood and testis by neutron or gamma-ray irradiation in black mouse. Six-week-old C57BL male mice were irradiated with neutron (flux: 1.036739E+09) or Co60 gamma rays(dose rate: lGy/min.) The irradiation method of animal was abdominal irradiation and dose of irradiation was 10 and 20 Gy added with 5 and 15Gy in neutron irradiation.. After that, the mice were sacrificed 3 days later.   • The prevalence of diabetes mellitus continues to rise alarmingly because of industrialization of society. The aim of this study was to investigate the antidiabetic effects of black ginseng extract (BGE) which was performed panax ginseng. First we examined the inhibitory effects of BGE on ${\alpha}$-glucosidase. But there was no practical effects in our observations. We, also, investigate the effects of BGE on glucose uptake of skeletal muscle using 2-NBDG in $C_2C_{12}$ myotube. BGE significantly improved the glucose uptake considered as a lowered blood glucose level. Effects of GBG05-FF on fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were investigated in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mouse. After injection of STZ, fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin rapidly increased. But STZ-induced diabetic mouse treated with GBG05-FF significantly reduced the level of fasting blood glucose and HbA1c. This results showed that supplementation of BGE improve the diabetic parameters and BGE have a potentiality as a functional food for Diabetes mellitus.

The effects of black garlic (Allium satvium) extracts on lipid metabolism in rats fed a high fat diet

  • BACKGROUD/OBEJECTIVES: The mechanism of how black garlic effects lipid metabolism remains unsolved. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to determine the effects of black garlic on lipid profiles and the expression of related genes in rats fed a high fat diet. MATERIALS/METHODS: Thirty-two male Sqrague-Dawley rats aged 4 weeks were randomly divided into four groups (n=8) and fed the following diets for 5 weeks: normal food diet, (NF); a high-fat diet (HF); and a high-fat diet + 0.5% or 1.5% black garlic extract (HFBG0.5 or HFBG1.5). Body weights and blood biochemical parameters, including lipid profiles, and expressions of genes related to lipid metabolism were determined. RESULTS: Significant differences were observed in the final weights between the HFBG1.5 and HF groups. All blood biochemical parameters measured in the HFBG1.5 group showed significantly lower values than those in the HF group. Significant improvements of the plasama lipid profiles as well as fecal excretions of total lipids and triglyceride (TG) were also observed in the HFBG1.5 group, when compared to the HF diet group. There were significant differences in the levels of mRNA of sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), fatty acid synthase (FAS), and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) in the HFBG1.5 group compared to the HF group. In addition, the hepatic expression of (HMG-CoA) reductase and Acyl-CoA cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) mRNA was also significantly lower than the HF group. CONCLUSIONS: Consumption of black garlic extract lowers SREBP-1C mRNA expression, which causes downregulation of lipid and cholestrol metahbolism. As a result, the blood levels of total lipids, TG, and cholesterol were decreased.

The Anti-Diabetic Effects and Nephroprotective Effect of Black Ginseng Prosapogenin Extract in Streptozotocin-Induced Mice (흑삼의 프로사포게닌 추출물이 Streptozotocin으로 유도된 당뇨 쥐에 대한 항당뇨 효과 및 신장보호 효과)

  • Background: This study examined the hypoglycemic and kidney protective effect of black ginseng in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. Methods and Results: Diabetes was induced by treating mice with streptozotocin (STZ) for four weeks. In vivo studies were performed in order to investigate the hypoglycemic effect of the black ginseng prosapogenin (GBG05-FF) extract. The body weight and blood glucose level were measured. Moreover, after the mice were sacrificed, the kidneys were isolated and histological changes were observed with hematoxylin and eosin staining. Blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels were also measured. The results showed that administration of black ginseng increased body weight. Compared to blood glucose levels in STZ mice, blood glucose levels were reduced by 48% in STZ mice supplemented with 300 mg/kg of black ginseng, and by 69% in STZ mice supplemented with 900 mg/kg. Furthermore, histopathological examination of STZ mouse kidneys revealed, changes in the kidneys, epithelial cell damages, inflammatory cell infiltration and glomerulus hypertrophy. However, a significant reduction of glomerular water droplets (indicative of glomerulus hypertrophy) was observed in the kidneys of STZ mice supplemented with black ginseng extract. Conclusions: These results suggest that black prosapogenin (GBG05-FF) ginseng extract has a significant hypoglycemic effect and can be used as an anti-diabetic substance and renal protective agents as part of dietary supplements or novel drugs.

A History of African-American Women Rewritten in Blood: Suzan-Lori Parks's Red Letter Plays (피로 다시 쓴 흑인 여성의 역사 - 수잔-로리 팍스의 『붉은 글씨 희곡』)

  • Since the beginning of her dramatic career, Suzan-Lori Parks has considered digging up and restoring African-American history buried under the dominant white Anglo-Saxon history as her mission as a playwright. In Red Letter Plays, she attempts what Deborah Geis called "canon-critique" by taking canonical work by Nathaniel Hawthorne and casting an African-American character as the main character and describing her oppression as an African-American female. This paper argues that Suzan-Lori Parks accuses the oppressive social system by restoring and representing the history of sexual, economic, and racial exploitation that African-American females had to suffer through the dominant image of body and blood. Parks had to rewrite the history of black female characters on their bodies and in the blood because their bodies have been the ultimate object of revulsion and attraction in the perspective of white male. While abhorring and despising Hester La Negrita's abject body, male characters in In the Blood nonetheless not only exploit her sexually and economically but also impregnate her. Hester resorts to her only means of revolting against this oppressive system; she kills her most beloved son and writes "A" on the floor with his blood. Likewise, Hester Smith in Fucking A, who wears "A" on her bosom like Hester Prynne, which in this case means "abortionist," "saves" her son from the hunters by slitting his throat. Abundant graphic and sensational images written on black female body and in the blood are Parks's dramatic strategy to rewrite the forgotten and hidden history of black women's history.

Effects of Aerobic Exercise and Black Garlic Intake on Blood Lipids, Lipid Peroxidation and BAP in Rats (유산소 운동과 흑마늘 섭취가 흰쥐의 혈중지질, 지질과산화 및 항산화 능력에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of aerobic exercise and black garlic intake on blood lipids, lipid peroxidation and BAP in rats. The subjects for the study were 25 male Sprague-Dawley rats composed of the control group (CG, n=6), exercise group (EG, n=6), which trained for 4 weeks (30-60 min/day, speed at 15 m/min), black garlic intake group (BGG, n=7), and exercise with black garlic intake group (EBGG, n=6). Blood lipids, lipid peroxidation, and BAP were measured in all the subjects after the end of the 4 week treadmill exercise period. The findings of this study were as follows; TC and TG were significantly lower in the EBGG compared to other groups, while there were no significant findings for HDL-C and LDL-C levels. TBARS was significantly lower in the EBGG compared to the CG, and the BAP from the EBGG and EG were significantly higher than in the CG and BGG after 4 weeks of treadmill exercise. Therefore, aerobic exercise with black garlic intake was effective in improving TC, TG, TBARS, and BAP. Consequently, aerobic exercise with black garlic intake will be effective for activating antioxidant defenses and decreasing cardiovascular diseases.

Comparison of Live Performance and Meat Quality Parameter of Cross Bred (Korean Native Black Pig and Landrace) Pigs with Different Coat Colors

  • Five hundred and forty crossbred (Korean native black pig${\times}$Landrace) F2 were selected at a commercial pig farm and then divided into six different coat color groups: (A: Black, B: White, C: Red, D: White spot in black, E: Black spot in white, F: Black spot in red). Birth weight, 21st d weight, 140th d weight and carcass weight varied among the different coat color groups. D group (white spot in black coat) showed a significantly higher body weight at each weigh (birth weight, 140th d weight and carcass weight) than did the other groups, whereas the C group (red coat color) showed a significantly lower body weight at finishing stage (140th d weight and carcass weight) compared to other groups. Meat quality characteristics, shear force, cooking loss and meat color were not significantly different among the different coat color groups, whereas drip loss was significantly higher in F than in other groups. Most blood characteristics were not significantly different among the different groups, except for the red blood cells.
