  • High levels for noise and a loss of true signal make the quantitative interpretation of nuclear medicine (NM) images difficult. An application of profile optimization using a sigmoidal function in this study was used to acquire the NM images with high quality. And the images were acquired by using three kinds of reconstruction method using each same sinogram: a standard filtered back-projection (FBP), an iterative reconstruction (IR) technique, and the sigmoidal function profile optimization (SFPO). Comparison of image according to reconstruction method was performed to show a superiority of the SFPO for imaging. The images reconstructed by using the SFPO showed an average of 1.49 times and of 1.17 times better in contrast than the results obtained using the standard FBP and the IR technique, respectively. Higher signal to noise ratios were obtained as an average of 12.30 times and of 3.77 times than results obtained using the standard FBP and the IR technique, respectively. This study confirms that reconstruction with SFPO (vs FBP and vs IR) can lead to better lesion detectability and characterization with noise reduction. It can be developed for future reconstruction technique for the NM imaging.

  • Intel's 80C196KD has been applied at the moving-actuator type total artificial heart ( MA-TAH ) from about early 1990th at our laboratory and it fulfilled its role successively. But the increased need of higher performance brought the other-type of the CPU, and the new challenge of ASIC to the application to the MA-TAH accelerated its need. So the new concept of the utilization of the DSP based CPU to the motor control was surveyed and analyzed deeply or about ew months and the results were introduced and summarized in this paper.

  • In this paper, we propose calibration methods that can be applied to the markerless surgical robotic system for Intracerebral Hematoma (ICH) Surgery. This surgical robotic system does not require additional process of patient imaging but only uses CT images that are initially taken for a diagnosis purpose. Furthermore, the system applies markerless registration method other than using stereotactic frames. Thus, in overall, our system has many advantages when compared to other conventional ICH surgeries in that they are non-invasive, much less exposed to radiation exposure, and most importantly reduces a total operation time. In the paper, we specifically focus on the application of calibration methods and their verification which is one of the most critical factors that determine the accuracy of the system. We implemented three applications of calibration methods between the coordinates of robot's end-effector and the coordinates of 3D facial surface scanner, based on the hand-eye calibration method. Phantom tests were conducted to validate the feasibility and accuracy of our proposed calibration methods and the surgical robotic system.

  • The purpose of this study is the development of PBL(problem-based learning) system using visual C++5.0 as a window-based application program. A patient who complains of weight loss was used in PBL case. Initial frame is made by dialog-based in MFC(microsoft foundation class). Also, sample medical images are composed of ultra-sound, chest PA, Thyroid scan, otherwise. we will make this program as CD-ROM and the internet application or computer assisted learning and continuous medical education.

  • Phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of proteins trigger many critical events involved in cellular response, such as regulation of enzymatic activity, protein conformational change, protein-protein interaction, and cellular localization. Any malfunction of protein phosphorylation leads to a diseased state such as diabetes, cancer, and even neurodegenerative diseases. In order to comprehend the molecular view of the complex biological processes of these diseases in depth, very sensitive and detailed analytical methods are necessary for identification of the phosphorylated residues in a protein. As part of these efforts, phosphoproteomics has been developed and applied for the elucidation of neurodegenerative diseases. In this review, we present a brief summary of phosphoproteomics approaches that are now routinely used in biomedical research, and describe the biomedical application of phosphoproteomics especially in Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases.

  • To evaluate an effect of toluene application to skin on the enhancement of liver damage in $CCl_4$-pretreated rats, toluene (35 mg/$cm^2$) was sequentially applied for 5 days to the skin of liver damaged rats with $CCl_4$ (6 times every other day: 0.1 ml/100 g body weight-50% $CCl_4$ in olive oil) On the basis of the functional and morphological findings in rat liver, appling toluene to the skin in liver damaged animals led to the more enhanced liver damage. In addition, by applying toluene to skin of liver damaged rats, the hepatic cytochrome P450 content was somewhat more increased, but the hepatic benzylalcohol dehydrogenase activity was significantly decreased (P<0.001), whereas benzaldehyde dehydrogenase activity was not statistically changed. In conclusion, the toluene application to skin in liver-damaged rat led to enhancement of liver injury that may be due to the accumulation of toluene metabolite in liver.
