  • This study was conducted to investigate the presence of biologically active substances such as phenolic acids, fatty acids and organic acids in the medical plants like Kalopanax pictum and Acanthopanacis cortex. Alcohol extracts of K. pictum and A. cortex showed complete inhibition of lettuce seed germination, indicating that these plants contained the biologically active substances. Eleven phenolic acids including protocatechuic acid were identified from K. pictum and A. cortex by GLC, and the contents of total phenolic acid were 1.7917mg/g in K. pictum, and 0.9567mg/g in A. cortex. Polyphenols such as neochlorogenic acid, chi orogenic acid, scopoletin, rutin and kaempferolglycoside which were not detected by GLC were anayzed by HPLC, and among phenolic acids indentified chi orogenic acid seemed to be the major acid in both K. pictum and A. cortex presented in amount of 23.7 and 13.0ppm, respectively. K. pictum contained 5.26mg/g of fatty acids and 27.69mg/g of organic acids, and A. cortex possessed 3.22mg/g of fatty acids and 9.80mg/g of organic acids, linoleic and oxalic acid appeared to be the major fatty and organic acids, representing more than 50% of total fatty acids and 80% of total organic acids.

  • In order to know the effects of scoria, germanium, charcoal, ginger, stevia, and CLA(Conjugated Linoleic Acid) as biologically active materials on pathogenic microbes and rumen anaerobic microbes, the growth rate of pathogens (including Escherichia coli O157, Salmonella paratyphi, Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus) and in vitro lumen microbial growth, gas production, ammonia concentration, carboxymethyl-cellulase (CMCase) activity, and microbial populations were investigated. The growth of pathogenic microbes was inhibited by the supplement of 0.10% ginger. Ginger had powerful antimicrobial properties on all the pathogens used in this experiments. Additionally in the antibacterial assay by paper disc method, we could observe the clear zone of similar area with the positive control(antibiotics) for E. coli as applied with the 10% stevia or the 10% CLA only. The supplements of ginger, stevia and CLA in vitro rumen fermentation inhibited populations of rumen bacteria and protozoa. Particularly supplement of ginger resulted in remarkable reduction of the protozoa population, which means it might serve as a source inhibiting material of methane creation in the rumen.

  • The seed of Torreya nucifera, which has been widely used as folk medicine in the treatment of tapeworm infestation, was pharmacologically examined to isolate the biologically active component. It was found that the water insoluble part of the methanol extract of the seed, which was previously pressed to remove inactive oil fraction, showed remarkable anthelmintic effects on the rat infected with Hymenolepis diminuta (rat tapeworm).

  • Human garnulocyte-colony stimulating factor(hG-CSF), a hematopoietic growth factor$^{1)}$, was produced and secreted from tobacco cell suspension. hG-CSF produced from tobacco cell suspension culture is biologically active form. The produced amount of hG-CSF is about 100${\mu}g/L$ in 9 days after inoculation.

  • We present a brief review for theoretical/computational studies of proton transfer processes of some simple biomolecules promoted by microsolvating water molecules. Focus is given on the relative stability of the canonical vs. zwitterionic forms of amino acids, tautomeric forms of the DNA base adenine, and the biologically active vs. inactive forms of nicotine. The biochemical implications of these findings are also discussed.

  • Phospholipids function as major components of biological membranes as well as precursors of biologically active lipid messengers. It is well known that arachidonic acid attached at the sn-2 position of phosphoglycerides serves as a precursor of prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Recently, it has been recognized that lysophospholipids such as lysophosphatidic acid, sphingosine 1-phosphate, lysophosphatidylserine and monoglyceride also function as lipid messengers with a variety of biological activities. • The purpose of this study was to investigate biological tissue reactions to various restorative dental materials. An experimental pellects was implanted into subdermal tissue in dog subjects observing 1 week, 3 weeks, and 8 weeks respectively. The obtained histo-pathological findings were as follows: 1. Experimental pellets such as gold, ticonium and amalgam alloy are considered biologically acceptable. 2. Experimental results in 1 week dog showed acute inflammatory changes. 3. Experimental results in 8 week dog showed fibrotic and chronic inflammatory changes. 4. Active irritans such as silicate cements revealed acute inflammatory changes in all observed period. 5. Biological tissue to irritants observed.
