  • In this study, the effects of empty bed contact time (EBCT) and water temperature on the biodegradation of 9 halonitromethanes (HNMs) in biological activated carbon (BAC) process were investigated. Experiments were conducted at three water temperatures ($10^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$) and three EBCTs (5, 10 and 15 min). Increasing EBCT and water temperature increased the biodegradation efficiency of HNMs in BAC column. Dibromochloronitromethane (DBCNM) and tribromonitromethane (TBNM) showed the highest biodegradation efficiency, but chloronitromethane (CNM) and dichloronitromethane (DCNM) were the lowest. The kinetic analysis suggested a pseudo-first-order reaction model for biodegradation of 7 HNMs at various water temperatures and EBCTs. The pseudo-first-order biodegradation rate constants ($k_{bio}$) of 7 HNMs ranged from $0.0797{\sim}0.7657min^{-1}$ at $10^{\circ}C$ to $0.1245{\sim}1.8421min^{-1}$ at $25^{\circ}C$. By increasing the water temperature from $10^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$, the biodegradation rate constants ($k_{bio}$) were increased 1.6~2.4 times.

  • The chemical and biological reaction of the aquatic organism is closely related with temperature variation and water temperature is one of the most important factors that should be considered in establishing sustainable reservoir operation scheme to minimize adverse environmental impacts related with dam construction. This paper investigates temperature variation in the downstream of Yongdam Reservoir using sampled data collected from total 8 temperature monitoring stations placed along the main river and the major tributaries. Using KoRiv1, 1-dimensional dynamic water quality simulation model, temperature variation in the downstream of Yongdam Reservoir has been simulated. The simulated results were compared with sampled data collected from May 15 to August 1 2008 by applying two different temperature modeling schemes, equilibrium temperature and full heat budget method. From the result of statistical analysis, seasonal temperature variation has been simulated by applying the equilibrium temperature scheme for comparison of the difference between the reservoir operation and the natural conditions.

  • The previous study developed the Filter-Disinfection-Adsorption (FDA) system to provide clean irrigation water for greenhouse cultivation as well as convenience water to farmers. In this study, the field examination was undertaken to assess performance of the FDA system. The field application was made in the suburb of Daegu, one of the large city in Korea. The study area located near by down-stream of Gum-Ho river is suffering low irrigation water quality problems with no water supply service facilities. Four water quality parameters including Suspended Solid (SS), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), coliform, and turbidity were selected to test the purification performance of FDA system. Also in order to improve the system, this study investigated the defects of using the FDA system through field monitoring. As results, it was found that this system can be used to supply good quality of irrigation water for greenhouse cultivation and also provide convenience water to farmers in the field areas of no water supply services.

  • A bench-scale reactor using SBR process was experimented with an synthetic wastewater. The main purpose of this investigation was to evaluate applicability in the field and process removal efficiencies in terms of BOD and T-P and its corresponding kinetic parameters. Removal rate of phosphorus was 77% in terms of total phosphorus. Effluent concentrations were $9.8mg/{\ell}$ BOD and $1.1mg/{\ell}$ T-P. Effluent quality was maintained consistently stable by controlling decant volume and operating cycles. The efficiency for phosphorus removal was increased due to decrease in BOD-SS loading value in the range of $0.25{\leq}$aeration time ratio${\leq}0.52$.

  • The Yeongsan River estuary was altered by a sea dike built in 1981 and the sluice gates in the dike were extended recently in 2014. The construction has caused changes in water properties and hydrodynamics and also produced disturbances including hypoxia and algal blooms. We analyzed the water quality and chlorophyll-a data (2009-2018) collected seasonally at 3 stations (Sts. 1-3) along the channel of the estuary by the Marine Environmental Monitoring System. Variations in water quality and chlorophyll-a (an index of phytoplankton biomass) were examined and their stressors were also identified by statistics including correlation and multivariate principal component analyses (PCA). The water quality was mainly affected by freshwater discharge from the dike. Salinity, nutrients and chlorophyll-a were especially affected by the discharge and the effect enhanced during summer and at the upper region near the sea dike decreasing downstream. Three factors were extracted for each station in the PCA accounting for 66.07-72.42% of the variations. The first was an external factor associated with freshwater discharge and the second and third were seasonal or biological factors. The results indicate that the water quality is more affected by short-termed and episodic events such as freshwater discharge than seasonal events and the influence of freshwater discharge on water quality is more extensive than that previously reported. This suggests that the boundary of the estuary should be extended to take into account the findings of this study and a management strategy linked to the freshwater zone is required to manage the integrity and water quality of the Yeongsan River estuary.

  • In this study, the effects of biofilter media type (three different activated carbons and anthracite), empty bed contact time (EBCT) and temperature on the removal of four aldehyde species (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, glyoxal and methylglyoxal) in BAC filters were investigated. Experiments were conducted at three water temperature (5, 15 and $25^{\circ}C$) and four EBCTs (5, 10, 15, and 20 min). The experimental results indicated that the coal based BAC retained more bacterial biomass on the surface of the activated carbon than the other BACs, and increasing EBCT or increasing water temperature also increased the four aldehyde species removal in BAC filters. To achieve above 80% of removal efficiency for four aldehyde species in a BAC filter, above 15 min EBCT at $5^{\circ}C$ and 10 min EBCT at above $15^{\circ}C$ were required. The kinetic analysis indicated a first-order reaction rate for the biodegradation of four aldehyde species at various water temperatures. Data obtained from the BAC filters at various temperatures were also used to evaluate pseudo first-order rate constants for four aldehyde species. The half-lives evaluated for formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, glyoxal and methylglyoxal in the coal-based BAC ranging from 0.89 to 3.19 min, from 0.75 to 3.35 min, from 2.16 to 4.72 min and from 1.49 to 3.86 min, respectively, could be used to assist water utilities in designing and operating BAC filters.

  • The genus-level biotic index of benthic macroinvertebrates (Benthic Macroinvertebrates Genus Index, BMGI) was developed and applicated based on the data collected from 13,347 sampling units of 814 sites from 2010 to 2021 in Korea. Tolerant values of 274 indicator taxa were established by analyzing the relationship between the relative frequency and abundance of indicator taxa and the water quality index considering biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total suspended solids (TSS), and total phosphorus (T-P). BMGI showed a slightly higher correlation with water quality than the species-level biotic index (Benthic Macroinvertebrates Index, BMI) that was developed and applied in Korea. Although the BMGI does not contain species-level information, the reason why BMGI shows higher applicability than BMI seems to be due to the increase in the number of indicator taxa and the decrease in the misidentification of immature aquatic insects. The coefficient of determination in multiple regression with BOD5, TSS, and TP for BMGI was 0.62 in the long-term averaged data of 814 sites, and the standardized coefficient of BOD5 was -0.46, TSS was -0.17 and T-P was -0.21, respectively. As a result of the evaluation by BMGI, of the 814 sites, 38% were in good, 25% in fair, and 37% in poor condition.

  • In this study, The effects of empty bed contact time (EBCT) and water temperature on the biodegradation of 8 synthetic fragrances (SFs) in biological activated carbon (BAC) process were investigated. Experiments were conducted at two water temperatures (7 and $18^{\circ}C$) and three EBCTs (5, 10 and 15 min). Increasing EBCT and water temperature increased the biodegradation efficiency of SFs in BAC column. Pentalide and ambrettolide were the highest biodegradation efficiency, but DPMI and ADBI were the lowest. The kinetic analysis suggested a pseudo-first-order reaction model for biodegradation of 8 SFs at various water temperatures and EBCTs. The pseudo-first-order biodegradation rate constants ($k_{bio}$) of 8 SFs ranging from $0.1184{\sim}0.6545min^{-1}$ at $7^{\circ}C$ to $0.3087{\sim}0.9173min^{-1}$ at $18^{\circ}C$. By increasing the water temperature from $7^{\circ}C$ to $18^{\circ}C$, the biodegradation rate constants ($k_{bio}$) were increased 1.4~2.6 times.
