Purpose: This study was conducted in order to present the effects of case management of a home visiting health service for clients with hypertension. Method: One-group pretest-posttest design was used. The subjects were 280 clients who received case management among the first and second registered group. The data were eight-week-case management results from January to December, 2010. In order to evaluate the effect of the visiting nursing service, biological indexes(blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein, BMI) and self-care abilities(knowledge/attitude of hypertension, management of medication, nutritional care, confidence of self care) were measured. Result: Biological indexes and self-care abilities were improved, except total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein. Conclusion: The case management of home visiting health service by public health centers is considered to be an effective nursing service. Therefore, greater effort is needed for better maintenance of case management, and more research is needed in order to examine a variety of biological indexes.
Purpose: This study aimed to explore nursing students' experiences of observing surgeries in the operating room. Methods: The data were collected through written scripts of nursing students who participated in the operating room practice. Data were analyzed via qualitative content analysis. Results: Five themes emerged from the data: 'preparing with the thrilled hearts toward unknown area', 'drawing back in front of the mirror of realities', 'becoming an audience at a lifesaving orchestra', 'reaching a tipping point of knowing', and 'redrawing the trajectory of dream to be a nurse'. Conclusion: This study will prove helpful in describing their needs for systemic and emotional support. Findings indicated that major contributions of surgical observations to nursing students are more integrated understandings of nursing and the determinations of their career preferences.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find factors influencing needlestick and sharp injuries (NSI). Methods: This study was a descriptive research for current situation of NSI, recognition and implementation for standard precaution, and factors influencing NSI exposures. The subjects were 450 nursing students of 2 universities in Seoul and Kyunggi-do. The data were collected from June to November, 2008. The gathered data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and regression analysis. Results: The 33.8% of 450 nursing students experienced NSI during 2 weeks clinical training. NSI events were more common among third-year students than second-year students. The most common causative device causing needlestick injuries was blood glucose lancet as 12.4%. Frequencies influencing NSI were students' year and experience of needlestick injuries. Conclusion: The results suggest development of education guidelines for nursing students and implementation of continual systematic education and training in clinic to control blood-borne infections efficiently.
Since the Human Genome Project(HGP) has begun in the mid 1980s, the sequencing of the human genome has been finally completed in 2001. The knowledge developed from the HGP has revolutionized how health care professionals think about patient care, mandating a new paradigm of patient care in totally inconceivable ways from the past. For instance, the patients at risk for disease can be identified early enough for intervention; the medicine can be tailored for individual patients based on their own genetic information ; the gene therapy could be a common procedure in the near future. The advancement in genetics, therefore, requires the shift of paradigm not only in nursing education, practice, but also in nursing research. It is attempted, in this article to introduce briefly the basic knowledge of genetics, the pharmacogenomics, and the overview of national genetic research initiated and organized by the Center for Functional Analysis of Human Genome in Korea. The current state of nursing genetic knowledge and its implications on nursing education, practice, and research has examined. Furthermore, the visions and the opportunities for nursing science and practice to participate in this genetic revolution were also explored.

Purpose: This study is a descriptive study to investigate the relevance between pathophysiological subject and examination workbook items for national nurse licensure examination in South Korea and the United States. Methods: Eight registered nurse licensure examination workbooks published by the Korean nurses association were used for the analysis. Saunders comprehensive review for the national council licensure examination (NCLEX-RN) was used for analysis of those in the United States. The relevance between the subjects in the standard syllabuses of pathophysiology and the registered nurse licensure exam items of these workbooks in South Korea and the United States respectively was analyzed. Results: The Relevance rates in South Korea and the United States were : fundamentals of nursing 6.34% vs 32.12%, adult nursing 25.5% vs 25.92% child health nursing 7.81% vs 21.7%, woman health nursing 5.1% vs 17.07% psychiatric mental health nursing 2.7% vs 7.32%, and community health nursing 0.9% vs 0%. Conclusion: the relevance in pathophysiology between the registered nurse licensure exam in South Korea and the United States was high in adult nursing and fundamentals of nursing (especially in the United States). In developing integrated registered nurse licensure exam questions, we should consider pathophysiology as an important subject.
Purpose: This study was conducted to reorganize the course of basic nursing science (BNS). Methods: The curriculums of 10 leading nursing colleges (domestic and abroad) were analyzed. And a survey was performed on 178 nursing students to identify the perceived level of knowledge, clinical application, the adequacy of class hours and further improvements for the course of BNS. Results: The various levels of credits and percentage were found in the curriculums of other nursing colleges (12-18 credits and 8.6, 13.6%, respectively). The perceived levels of knowledge, clinical application were directly proportional to the adequacy of class hours, and students suggested the increment of class hours and in-depth study. Based on these results, the course of BNS was reorganized as follows: 1) The course of BNS was divided into 2 courses (BNS 1, 2) and total credits were increased to 5 credits. 2) The BNS 1 course was focused on basic concepts to understand human anatomy and physiology. And BNS 2 consisted of detailed structures and functions of human body system. 3) 12 Quizzes were added. Conclusion: The efforts to reorganize the curriculum of BNS might strengthen nursing students' ability to understand nursing phenomena, help student with academic performance and clinical training.
Purpose: The purpose of this descriptive, cross-sectional study was to examine Korean undergraduate nursing students' perceived knowledge and attitudes toward genetics. Nursing competencies for genetics among nursing students were also assessed. Methods: Two hundred eighty-six Korean junior and senior undergraduate nursing students who went through their clinical practicum completed a packet of self-report questionnaires exploring opinions about the integration of genetics into the nursing curriculum, as well as their perceived knowledge, attitudes, and nursing competencies toward genetics. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA. Results: Overall, Korean undergraduate nursing students reported limited genetic knowledge, but most of them were comfortable with drawing pedigree. In general, nursing students were competent in providing genetic nursing. Their genetic nursing competencies were significantly different depending on the level of general understanding of genetics. There was no significant difference between juniors and seniors regarding knowledge, attitudes, and competencies toward genetics. More than 60% of nursing students reported the need for genetic nursing, and the majority considered lectures to be the most effective method to learn genetic knowledge. Conclusion: It is imperative to integrate genetics into nursing curriculum in order to improve nursing students' genetic nursing competencies as well as genetic knowledge.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of nursing students in Korea who used concept mapping for understanding pathophysiology. Methods: The data were collected using an open-ended questionnaire from 83 sophomore nursing students after studying concept mapping in pathophysiology class. Each group consisted of five nursing students submitting four concept maps regarding cell injury, inflammation, infection, and neoplasm. After familiarity with concept mapping, the participants wrote their experiences anonymously on sheets of paper. The submitted materials were analyzed via qualitative content analysis. Results: The collected materials were classified into 3 themes, 8 categories, and 18 subcategories. Three themes emerged: (1) awareness of capabilities, (2) difficulties of completion, and (3) benefits of application. Conclusion: The study revealed that participants experienced self-capabilities, and the difficulties and benefits of concept mapping. Concept mapping also provided the opportunity for nursing students to realize communication skill improvement by active group discussion within a group.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore nursing students' experience in microbiology courses. Methods: Data were gathered through 4 focus group interviews and 1 in-depth personal interview, by 19 nursing students who attended microbiology courses. Data were collected June 15-July 20, 2018. Conventional content analysis was used for data analysis. Results: The result of this study revealed 4 categories: "facing the challenge", "types of learning", "lack of learning motivation", "acquiring knowledge of infection". Conclusion: Findings suggest that it is important to identify nursing students' perspectives, to improve microbiology curriculum in the educational process. Also, it is necessary to connect continuously, between educational and practical environments, for effective management of microbiology courses.
Purpose: This study investigated the effect of pressure injury nursing knowledge, and pressure injury nursing attitudes, on pressure injury nursing practice. Methods: Participants in this descriptive study were 141 nurses at 20 geriatric hospitals. Data was collected August 24, 2021- April 4, 2022, and analyzed in terms of Independent t-test and one-way ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression, using the SPSS/WIN 27.0 program. Results: Pressure injury nursing practice positively correlated with pressure injury nursing attitudes (r= .44, p< .001). Factors influencing pressure injury nursing practice were pressure injury nursing attitudes (β= .43, p< .001), and gender (β= .21, p= .006). The model used in this study explains 22.8% of pressure injury nursing practice (Adjusted R2= 22.8, F= 11.30, p< .001). Conclusion: Results show factors that influence pressure injury nursing practice of nurses in geriatric hospitals. Based on the results, pressure injury nursing practice programs must include factors that improve pressure injury nursing attitudes. A follow-up study to confirm the impact of developing a program for increasing pressure injury nursing practice is also recommended.
