  • Chitosan is widely used in cosmetics and medical fields. Special emphasis has been put on the chemical modification of chitosan to explore its full potential. We have described the synthesis and biological activity of novel peptide amino acid derivatives. The polyamino acid derivatives were synthesized by introducing alkylamine functional group on chitosan at C-6. The poor aqueous solubility of chitosan derivatives hinder both pharmacological studies and pharmaceutical development. To make amino acid coupled chitosan derivatives with improved biological effect and solubility, some attempts have been taken to consist of amino peptide group like aspartic acid and phenylalanine-aspartic acid derivatives onto chitosan C-6. The resultingly substituted chitosan was characterized by solubility in various solvents. We measured chitosan derivatives with $^1H$-NMR and $^{13}C$-NMR. Also, We were investigated on the physical properties and biological activities of these products.

  • Ionizing radiation can be used to improve the color of green tea extract to brighter. As a result, the irradiated green tea extract can be applied easier and broader in food or cosmetic industry. To confirm the retention of the biological activities of the cosmetic products added with green tea polyphenols (PPs), the real cosmetic products including a skin lotion (PS) and an essence (PE) cream were manufactured. Irradiation also applied to the manufactured cosmetic products to see their improvement of color and changes of biological activity. The PP showed 72% of electron donating ability (EDA) at a 5 ppm concentration and the PS and PE containing 2% PP showed higher than 60%, which was similar inhibition activity to vitamin C. The inhibition of superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of PP, PS, and PE were higher than 55% at a 500 ppm concentration and the inhibition of xanthine oxidase (XOase) were also higher than 65% at a 200 ppm concentration. The measurement of lipid oxidation by addition of $Cu^{2+}$ and $Fe^{2+}$ as prooxidants showed that PP and PS had higher metal chelating ability for $Fe^{2+}$ than that of PE and the ability increased by increase of polyphenol concentration isolated from green tea. The $Cu^{2+}$ chelating ability of PP and PS showed higher than 90% at a 200 ppm concentration. Therefore, it is concluded that addition of PP in manufacturing PS and PE retains its biological activities including EDA, inhibition of XOase and SOD-like activity, and metal chelating ability in the manufactured cosmetic products. In addition, irradiation of PS and PE improved color of the products containing PP brighter without any adverse changes in biological activity of the products.

  • The bursa of Fabricius (BF) is a central humoral immune organ unique to birds. Four bursal peptides (BP-I, BP-II, BP-III, and BP-IV) have been isolated and identified from the BF. In this study, the immunoadjuvant activities of BPs I to IV were examined in mice immunized with H9N2 avian influenza virus (AIV) vaccine. The results suggested that BP-I effectively enhanced cell-mediated immune responses, increased the secretion of Th1 (interferon gamma)- and Th2 (interleukin-4)-type cytokines, and induced an improved cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) response to the H9N2 virus. BP-II mainly elevated specific antibody production, especially neutralizing antibodies, and increased Th1- and Th2-type cytokine secretion. BP-III had no significant effect on antibody production or cell-mediated immune responses compared to those in the control group. A strong immune response at both the humoral and cellular levels was induced by BP-IV. Furthermore, a virus challenge experiment followed by H&E staining revealed that BP-I and BP-II promoted removal of the virus and conferred protection in mouse lungs. BP-IV significantly reduced viral titers and histopathological changes and contributed to protection against H9N2 AIV challenge in mouse lungs. This study further elucidated the immunoadjuvant activities of BPs I to IV, providing a novel insight into immunoadjuvants for use in vaccine design.

  • Some biological activities of Beauveria bassiana were studied to elucidate pharmacological function of B. bassiana-infected larva of the silkworm. The mycelium consisted mainly of carbohydrate (65.8%), followed by protein (15.9%) and fat (8.3%). Glucose (68.8%), mannose (7.1%), and galactose (6.1%) were major components in carbohydrates. Ten amino acids including glutamine, threonine, valine, aspartic acid, alanine, leucine, serine, glycine, arginine, and isoleucine were found in protein as major amino acids. Various extracts were prepared from the freeze-dried mycelium of B. bassiana by systemic extraction and their biological activities were investigated. Among tested fractions, the hot-water extract (HW) contributed significantly to the anti-coagulant activity, anti-complementary activity, and stimulation of intestinal immune system. The methanol extract (ME) increased acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition activity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activity.

  • In this study, the effect of gamma irradiation on the microbial contamination and biological activities of tuna cooking juices was investigated. Tuna cooking juice was by-produced during the canning processing, and had various functional components. But, it was shown that the tuna cooking juice was seriously contaminated. Gamma irradiation effectively reduced the microbial population in tuna cooking juice. Also, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, tyrosinse inhibitory activity, and ACE inhibitory activity of tuna cooking juices were all increased as a result of gamma irradiation. These results suggest that wasted tuna cooking juices can be used as a functional component in the food and cosmetic industries if the irradiation technology were applied.

  • To investigate the influences of biological factors on stored rice and their interactions, the activities of red Hour beetle(Tribolium castaneum) and 2 species of Aspergillus was observed during 6 weeks at $28^{\circ}C{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. It was found that the red flour beetle could complete its life cycle on rice in six weeks. Its activity caused the increse of moisture content of rice(max. 1.3%) after 6 weeks, but the number of mold propagule on the surface of stored rice decreased. The growth of red flour beetle showed a stabilizing tendency on rice inoculated with Asp. repens while it was retarded with Asp. niger.

  • Irradiation of the berberinephenolbetaine in a stream of argon produced the 8,14-cycloberberines [1]. On treatment with ethylchloroformate $C_8-N$ bond cleavage of the compound [1] occurred, accompanied with dehydrochlorination to give 7-ethylcarboxyisoquinoline [3], and the product [3] treated with strong alkali solution to give the 13-oxonorotensane [4] in 64% yield. Irradiation of the compound [4] converted easily to dihydro-8H-dibenzo[a, g] quinolizine-8-one [5]. and then the compound [5] was treated with methyliodide to give the 8-oxo-quinolizinium methiode. The intermediate colume chromatography on IRA-400 afforded the benzo[c, g]azecine-5-one[6] in 63% yield. The results of biological activities for these compounds are also presented.

  • Various biological activities (enzyme inhibitory potency, lipoxygenase inhibition, tadpole narcosis, vapor toxicity and heat of vaporization) of molecules are correlated with molecular descriptors. The molecular descriptors used in this works are molecular connectivity index, Wiener distance index and ad hoc descriptor, which can encode information about branching, size, cyclization, unsaturation, hetero atom content and polarizability. It is found that calculated values from multiple regression equations are in a good agreement with experimental data on five biological activities of alcohol, ester and ketone compounds.

  • This study is aimed to investigate the skin thickness, plasma components, serum IgE level and antioxidant enzymes activities by mixtures of Cnidium officinale, Saururus chinensis, Houttuynia cordata and Glycyrrhiza uralensis on the allergic contact dermatitis of rat induced by 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). Mixtures reduced the thickness of the skin and removed the dead skin cells compared to the skin of rats treated with DNCB alone. Also, these mixtures down-regulated the contents of lipid and IgE, and reduced the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase. These results indicate that the mixtures significantly recovered the contact dermatitis induced by DNCB. In conclusion, it is thought that the mixtures could be useful for the allergic contact dermatitis.
