Nitrogen removal rate and emergent plant growth were investigated of a free-water-surface constructed treatment wetland system, whose dimensions were 31m in length and 12m in width. The system was constructed on floodplain in the Kwangju Stream from May to June 2001. Cattails(Typha angustifolia) were transplanted from natural wetlands and their stems were cut at about 40cm height from their bottom ends. Water of the Kwangju Stream were funneled into the system by gravity flow and its treated effluent was discharged back into the stream. The average height of the cattail stems was 45.2cm in July 2001 and 186cm in October 2001. The number of stems averaged 22 stems/$m^2$ in July 2001 and 52 stems/$m^2$ in September 2001. Volume and water quality of inflow and outflow were analyzed from July 2001 through December 2001. Inflow and outflow averaged 40.01 and 39.55 $m^3$/day, respectively. Hydraulic detention time was about 1.5 days. Average nitrogen uptake by cattails was 69.31 $N\;mg\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$. Removal rate of $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$ and T-N averaged 195.58, 53.65 and 628.44 $mg\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$, respectively. The average removal rate of T-N was about 39%.

Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6, isolated from the roots of dryland, field-grown commercial wheat in the USA, enhances plant health and therefore it is used in agriculture as a biofertilizer and biocontrol agent. The metabolites produced by this pseudomonad stimulate plant growth through direct antagonism of pathogens and by inducing systemic resistance in the plant. Studies upon P. chlororaphis O6 identify the pathways through which defined bacterial metabolites generate protection against pathogenic microbes, insects, and nematodes. P. chlororaphis O6 also triggers plant resistance to drought and salinity stresses. The beneficial determinants are produced from bacterial cells as they form biofilms during root colonization. Molecular control these processes in P. chlororaphis O6 involves the global regulatory Gac/Rsm signaling cascade with cross-talk between other global regulatory pathways. The Gac/Rsm regulon allows for coordinate phasing of expression of the genes that encode these beneficial traits among a community of cells. This review provides insights on the Gac/Rsm regulon in expression of beneficial traits of the P. chlororaphis O6 which can contribute to help yield enhancement and quality in agricultural production.
The effects of initial concentration, flow rate, and recycle ratio on the removal efficiency of phenol were studied in a tapered fluidized bed reactor packed with activated carbon which was attached with Candida tropicalis. The optimum conditions of Candida tropicalis were showed that pH was 7.0 and temperature was $30^{\circ}C$, and the specific growth rate of Candida tropicalis was satisfied with the Monod equation up to 500 mg/L of phenol, and beyond it the inhibition of substrate was found. According to the increases of initial concentration and flow rate, the removal efficiency was decreased, as the recycle ratio was increased, the removal efficiency was increased. In the case of flow rate of 10mL/sec and the recycle ratio of 2, the removal efficiency was 90% above for the all of initial concentration. The removal rate of phenol was the first order reaction in this system, and the rate equation of reaction was as follows.
Electrochemically active bacteria were successfully enriched in an electrochemical cell using a positively poised working electrode. The positively poised working electrode (+0.7 V vs. Ag/AgCl) was used as an electron acceptor for enrichment and growth of electrochemically active bacteria. When activated sludge and synthetic wastewater were fed to the electrochemical cell, a gradual increase in amperometric current was observed. After a period of time in which the amperometric current was stabilized (generally 8 days), linear correlations between the amperometric signals from the electrochemical cell and added BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) concentrations were established. Cyclic voltammetry of the enriched electrode also showed prominent electrochemical activity. When the enriched electrodes were examined with electron microscopy and confocal scanning laser microscopy, a biofilm on the enriched electrode surface and bacterium-like particles were observed. These experimental results indicate that the electrochemical system in this study is a useful tool for the enrichment of an electrochemically active bacterial consortium and could be used as a novel microbial biosensor.

Phenol and other phenolic compounds are common constituents of aqueous effluents from processes such as polymeric resin production, oil refining and cokeing plants. Phenol is a both toxic and lethal of fish at relatively low concentrations e.g. 5-25 mg/L and imparts objectionable tastes to drinking water at far lower concentration. Therefore, the treatment of phenol effluent is important. Among the various techniques of phenol wastewater treatment, microbial teratment is a popular process. The breakdown of phenols by microorganisms has recived considerable attention, because of its biochemical interest and its industrial importance in effluent treatment. This research was performed to investigate the dynamics of microbial community, biofilm growth and the comparison of phenol removal efficiency by RBC (Rotating Biological Contactor) using Rhodococcus sp. EL-GT The experiment was carried out at rotating speed of 10ppm and hydraulic retention time of 7 hours. As time passed, phenol removal efficiency was gained highly. The RBC using Rhodococcus sp. EL-GT completely degraded 15 mM.
The combined SHARON (Single reactor system for High ammonium Removal Over Nitrite)-ANAMMOX (Anaerobic ammonium oxidation) reactor were operated in mesophilic condition ($35^{\circ}C$). In this study, microbial granulation and characteristics of SHARON and ANAMMOX sludges were investigated using settling test, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH). In SHARON reactor, Aerobic granulation with diameter of 1.5~2.5 mm was accomplished but aerobic granulation was weaker than anaerobic granular sludge. Initial seed sludge of ANAMMOX reactor was used as attached media for biofilm growth. ANAMMOX sludge was more compact and rounder rather than seed sludge. Though ANAMMOX sludge has high activity, it has lower settling ability than the seed granule. The color of ANAMMOX sludge was changed from dark to redish brown granular with diameter of 1~2 mm. In FISH of ANAMMOX sludge, high fraction of Candidatus B. stuttgartiensis which paid great role of nitrogen conversion was detected. Also, FISH results reveals that ANAMMOX bacteria inhabit at inner parts near surface, having advantages in utilization of substrates and protection from oxygen inhibition.
We have investigated the differences between the general corrosion and microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of steels in terms of electrochemical behavior and surface phenomena. Corrosion potential of steels in the absence of SRB (sulfate-reducing bacteria) shifted to a low level and was maintained throughout the experimental period (40 days). The potential in the presence of SRB, however, shifted to a noble level after 20 days' incubation, indicating the growth of SRB biofilms on the test metal specimens and a formation of corrosion products. In addition, the color of medium inoculated with SRB changed from gray to black. The color change appeared to be caused by the formation of pyrites (FeS) as a corrosion product while no significant color change was observed in the medium without SRB inoculation. Moreover, corrosion rates of various steels tested for MIC were higher than those in the absence of SRB. This is probably because SRB were associated with the increasing corrosion rates through increasing cathodic reactions which caused reduction of sulfate to sulfide as well as formation of an oxygen concentration cell. The pitting corrosions were also observed in the SRB-inoculated medium.
Despite the enormous technical and economic efforts to improve environmental conditions, currently about 40% of the global population (or 2 billion people) are still lack access to safe water supply and adequate sanitation facilities. Pollution problems and transmission of water- related diseases will continue to proliferate. The rapid population growth and industrialization will lead to a reduction of arable land, thus exacerbating the food shortage problems and threatening environmental sustainability. Natural systems in this context are a transdisciplinary approach which employs the activities of microbes, soil and/or plants in waste stabilisation and resource recovery without the aid of mechanical or energy-intensive equipments. Examples of these natural systems are: waste stabilisation ponds, aquatic weed ponds, constructed wetlands and land treatment processes. Although they require relatively large land areas, the natural systems could achieve a high degree of waste stabilisation and at the same time, yield potentials for waste recycling through the production of algal protein, fish, crops, and plant biomass. Because of the complex interactions occurring in the natural systems, the existing design procedures are based mainly on empirical or field experience approaches. An integrated kinetic model encompassing the activities of both suspended and biofilm bacteria and some important engineering parameters has been developed which could predict the organic matter degradation in the natural systems satisfactorily.
Nitrogen, in its various forms, can deplete dissolved oxygen levels in receiving waters, stimulate aquatic growth, exhibit toxicity toward aquatic life and affect the suitability of sewage for reuse. Pilot-scale Rotating Biological Contactor(RBC) experiments were conducted to examine biological nitrification, respectively, of municipal sewage with five different internal recirculation ratios of 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 using the constant hydraulic loading of $205L/m^2{\cdot}day$. The use of internal recirculation improved nitrification on account of the dilution of biodegradable organic carbon in influent sewage down to 15 mg/L of $SBOD_5$ or less. Ammonium nitrogen of $14.3{\pm}2.4%$ was consumed by cellular assimilation without the occurrence of denitrification. The thickness of biofilm didn't seem effect significantly the nitrification and denitrification. Nitrification with internal recirculation was found to occur using hydraulic loading rate of as high as $205L/m^2{\cdot}day$, which was beyond the generally known values of it.

Acidovorax citrulli (Ac) is a phytopathogenic bacterium that causes bacterial fruit blotch (BFB) in cucurbit crops, including watermelon. However, there are no effective methods to control this disease. YggS family pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme acts as a coenzyme in all transamination reactions, but its function in Ac is poorly understood. Therefore, this study uses proteomic and phenotypic analyses to characterize the functions. The Ac strain lacking the YggS family pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme, AcΔyppAc(EV), virulence was wholly eradicated in geminated seed inoculation and leaf infiltration. AcΔyppAc(EV) propagation was inhibited when exposed to L-homoserine but not pyridoxine. Wild-type and mutant growth were comparable in the liquid media but not in the solid media in the minimal condition. The comparative proteomic analysis revealed that YppAc is primarily involved in cell motility and wall/membrane/envelop biogenesis. In addition, AcΔyppAc(EV) reduced biofilm formation and twitching halo production, indicating that YppAc is involved in various cellular mechanisms and possesses pleiotropic effects. Therefore, this identified protein is a potential target for developing an efficient anti-virulence reagent to control BFB.
