  • The historical consumption of oil dispersant was recorded during the protection plans after huge oil spill occurred in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. As a well-known oil dispersant, Corexit 9500 was used and continuously blamed for the negative effects on environmental ecology. Nevertheless, US EPA still recognizes Corexit 9500 as a future oil dispersant that might be possibly sprayed again to oil slick. In order to develop alternative oil dispersants, it is important to impel the convergency works mainly from microbiologist, ecologist, environmentalist, chemist, and chemical engineer. In this paper, the major components of Corexit 9500 were introduced by chemical structures and physical properties. Presented were also the biodegradable process of dispersed oils and the possible candidates of biosurfactants.

  • A minimal quantity lubrication (MQL) machining is able to achieve both functions of cooling and lubrication with an extremely low quantity of a cutting fluid and a large amount of air blow. Using a biodegradable ester oil, turning tests were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the MQL system. It was found that the performance of MQL cutting was equivalent to, or better than, that of conventional cutting, because the MQL system tends to prevent the heat damage of the tool tip and, if an effective lubricant such as a particular polyol ester is applied to the system, it can avoid the extensive transfer of workpiece materials on to the tool surface.

  • This study deals with development of new bio-based polymeric materials from epoxidized soybean oil (ESO). The curing of ESO in the presence of organophilic montmorillonite produced an oil polymer-clay nanocomposite ("green nanocomposite") showing flexible property. A green nanocomposite (oil polymer-silica nanocomposite) coatings were synthesized by an acidcatalyzed curing of ESO with 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane. The curing of ESO in the presence of a biodegradable plastic, poly(caprolactone), produced a composite with semi-IPN structure. The mechanical properties of the composite was much superior to those of polyESO. These new oil-based materials have large potential for applications in various fields.

  • In this study, we focus on the recycling of cardboard waste and sugarcane bagasse (SCB) for the preparation of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and its conversion into a biodegradable film. Sodium alginate (SA) was added to form a biodegradable composite film. SA was used to increase film permeability. Glycerol, which is a plasticizer, was used to increase the tensile strength (TS) and film expansion. To characterize the CMC, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were used. The addition of olive oil to the CMC-SA matrix highlighted its antimicrobial property against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). A slight decrease in tensile strength was observed with the addition of olive oil (OO), which improved the functional properties of the control films as well as lowered moisture content and water solubility. But considering all other factors, the composite films obtained from sugarcane bagasse and cardboard waste incorporated with olive oil are suitable for applications in the field of food packaging.

  • Water-in-oil emulsion (W/O) and oil-in-water emulsion (O/W) types biodegradable polymer emulsions prepared to PLA and PBS. The optimal mixing ratio of polymer : solvent : OA : TEA : water was found be 10 : 40 : 4 : 6 : 30(g) when preparing emulsions. Biodegradability was most retained after preparation of polymer emulsions. Particle size of PLA and PBS emulsions were 2-3 ${\mu}m$ and 3-4 ${\mu}m$, respectively. Molecular weight of PLA and PBS emulsions were 108,000 and 92,000, respectively. And molecular weight of PLA and PBS emulsions became slightly lower than those of pellets.

  • The novel microsphere blending and multiple emulsion method by single process was tried to prepare sustained release microspheres which release a physiologically active substance for long periods of time. A drug was separately dissolved in each of two or more oils containing biodegradable polymers to give the primary oil phases. The primary oil phases were dispersed in single aqueous phase in succession. From the drug-dispersed solution, the organic solvent was removed to produce microspheres. The accelerated drug release from the microsphere formulation prepared by single process through the multiple emulsion method was very similar to a physical blending of separately prepared microspheres using the same polymers. But long term release was not same. In this study, leuprorelin acetate loaded poly(lactide-co-glycolide) microsphere formulation for one-month delivery was developed by the multi-emulsion method followed by solvent extraction/evaporation method.

  • Starting from the distribution transformer, the insulation oil for the oil immersed power transformer is being used to convert the vegetable oil from the existing mineral oil. Vegetable oil is better in temperature characteristics and insulation performance, is not toxic, and has better biodegradable characteristic than that of mineral oil. In order to investigate the corona inception voltage and dieclectic charateristics of the two insulating oils, three oil immersed transformers using mineral oil and vegetable oil were made and thermal cyclic aged. In this paper, the changes in the corona discharge inception voltage, chemical and electrical properties of the two sampled insulating oils from the transformers had been studied.

  • In this study, two biodegradable polymer(PLA, PBS) emulsions were treated on agricultural packaging paper such as fruit bagging paper. Water-repellency, mechanical properties, and SEM image with thermal aging were measured on the emulsion treated fruit bagging paper. Biodegradable polymers(such as poly lactic acid, poly butylene succinate) emulsion treated fruit bagging paper had higher water-repellency and strength than other water-repellent(such as acrylic repellent, linseed oil and paraffin wax) treated fruit bagging paper. According to FE-SEM results of polymer emulsion coated fruit bagging paper, the colloidal particles of emulsion after thermal treatment (looks like being) were adhered to the fibers. Thus, using biodegradable polymer emulsion is expected to protect a fruit for a long time.

  • In recent years, environmental concerns have been raised on the use of poorly biodegradable fluids in electrical apparatus in regions where spills from leaks and equipment failure could contaminate the surroundings. For development of the environmental-friendly pole transformer using vegetable oil, we discussed the insulation construction of the transformer and the dielectric characteristics of the Nomex insulation paper in vegetable oil. Based on the experimental data, the insulation of the transformer is designed.
