  • The $^1H\;and\;^{13}C$ chemical shifts of flavone and its five derivatives were determined completely using the basic 1D and 2D NMR experiments and molecular modeling. Of the six compounds used for our experiments, the NMR data of three compounds were published previously, but we found that the data of two compounds included wrong assignments. Therefore, we report the corrected data and the complete assignments of NMR data of the other three compounds.

  • The aim of this work is to study the effect of aggregate type on the physico-mechanical properties and microstructure of bio-mortar (BM). Three different aggregates such as sand, dolomite and basalt were used. BM was prepared by mixing aggregates with bacterial cells (Sporosarcina Pasteurii) and one equimolar (1 M) of $urea/CaCl_2.2H_2O$. The results proved that the chemical composition and physical properties of aggregates play an important role in the microbial precipitation rate as well as size, morphology and crystallinity of the precipitated calcite, which strongly reflects on the properties of the prepared BM. The BM containing dolomite gave the highest compressive strength and lowest water absorption.

  • Every protein can be characterized by either a distinct motif or a combination of motifs. Nevertheless, little is known about the relationships among (more than two) the motifs. Some of the proteins in the world are share motifs for evolutional or other biological benefits - they can save energy, time and resource for controlling and managing a variety of proteins. In some cases of motifs, the tendency is quite common and they can act the 'hub' motif of a network of the motif associations. The hubs are structurally and functionally important in themselves and also important in disease-related mutations. They will be highly resistant mutation to conserve their functions. But, in case of the a rare mutation, mutations on the position of hub can more easily cause fatal diseases.

  • We observed seasonality and other characteristics of spawning in the greenling Hexagrammos agrammus off the coast of Tongyeong. Eleven spawning grounds were identified between November, 2013 and January, 2014. The fertilized eggs of H. agrammus were assigned to developmental stages I, II, III, and IV. Based on this classification, we showed that the spawning season extended from the end of October to mid-January. H. agrammus used diverse seaweed species attached to shallow bedrock as spawning substrata that provided good camouflage. Two to seven egg masses were fertilized around the holdfasts of individual seaweeds at depths of 1.2-4.0 m. We identified species-specific reproductive traits of H. agrammus during the spawning season, including strong parental care of the fertilized eggs.

  • In this study, low cost bio-flocculants, chitosan, cationic starch and Mg-sericite, were used as a flocculant to harvest freshwater microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris. Chitosan, cationic starch and Mg-sericite separated successfully >98% of C. vulgaris at following optimal parameters: 90 mg/L chitosan at pH 6-7, 70 mg/L cationic starch at pH 9-10 and 50 mg/L Mg-sericite at pH 4-5. A relatively high correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9993 for chitosan, 0.9971 for catonic starch and 0.9924 for Mg-sericite was obtained. The investigated flocculants amount increased linearly with increasing the microalgae amount. The biopolymer, Mg-sericite, was more effective than that of other investigated flocculants. These results indicated that a bio-flocculants, chitosan, cationic starch and Mg-sericite, could prove to be an effective flocculant for economical production of microalgae biomass. In addition, Mg-sericite was more effective comparing to the other investigated flocculants.

  • An novel amylolytic yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae HA 27, isolated from nuruk, displayed resistance against high sugar (50% glucose) and alcohol (15%). Maximal production of amylolytic enzyme by S. cerevisiae HA 27 was achieved on 9 days of cultivation at the optimal temperature $20^{\circ}C$ and pH 6.0. The activity of amylolytic enzyme produced by S. cerevisiae HA 27 was stable, even at $70^{\circ}C$, and over a broad pH range (4.0-11.0). Also, the amylolytic enzyme of S. cerevisiae HA 27 showed optimal activity in pH 5.0 at $50^{\circ}C$. S. cerevisiae HA 27 exhibited 6.2%(v/v) alcohol fermentation ability using starch as a carbon source.
