  • This paper describes the power performance and emission characteristics of the high speed direct injection diesel engine (2.9 litter displacements) driven by soybean oil asknown a bio diesel fuel. The results were compared to diesel fuel with blending bio diesel fuels. The soybean bio diesel fuel was added in the diesel fuel in concentration varying from 25% to 75% volume rates. We measured the emissions according to ECE 13 mode and full load, fixedengine speed. When the 25% bio diesel fuel was used, NOx emission at the ECE 13 mode test slightly decreased compared with diesel base engine. Over engine speed of 2000 rpm, the level of unburned hydrocarbon(HC) and carbon monoxide(CO) were the same to the diesel engine. Smoke emission decreased asthe blending bio diesel fuel rate increased.

  • The biodiesel used as an alternative fuel for diesel engines is well- known, however the price of the bio-diesel is still higher than conventional diesel oil (DO) by 10% to 15% depending on a kind of bio-oil and a country producing the bio-diesel. One of idea to reduce the price of bio-diesel is to use the pure bio-oil as fuel for marine diesel engines, because to use the pure bio-oil as fuel without the esteritification process can reduce the price of bio-fuel. At present time, some experts in some countries who have been carrying out experiments on the use of pure bio-oil produced from rape seeds, sunflower seeds... as fuel for marine diesel engines have achieved important results. In recent years, at Vietnam Maritime University we also have been using the pure palm oil and its blended fuel (Palm oil and DO) as fuel for marine diesel engines in laboratory and on board of ships. The blended fuel is a mixing fuel of the pure palm oil and diesel oil with content of pure palm oil by 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 35%. In this paper, we would like to present some results from our experiments to investigate the impacts of using the palm oil and its blended fuel on the important technical features of the fuel supply system of marine diesel engines such as the fuel supply amount for one cycle, fuel supplying pressure, ignition delay time and so on. The results from the research will be good fundamental parameters to support proper operation of marine diesel engines using bio-oil and blended fuels as alternative fuel in near future.

  • Esterified bio-diesel oil is normally used as blend oil of 3% that and 97% diesel fuel in Korea. Since specifics of it is similar to that of diesel fuel, availability of non-esterified bio-diesel oil that has a lower expenses of manufacturing is worthy of attention. However, bio-diesel oil has a demerit which it emits typically more NOx emission than diesel fuel. In this study, characteristic tests using blending oil with 95% gas oil and 5% bio-diesel oil were achieved at lower common rail pressure in order to improve this demerit. It was noticed that non-esterified bio-diesel oil has more similar characteristics to diesel fuel than esterified bio-diesel oil and it emits more NO emission by fuel NO mechanism.

  • In this research, combustion and spray characteristics were investigated experimentally in a constant volume chamber by applying bio-diesel fuel to a common-rail system in which precise control is available for utilizing environmentally friendly properties of bio-diesel fuel. The experiment was conducted at fuel temperatures $20^{\circ}C$ and $-20^{\circ}C$ to investigate combustion characteristics of bio-diesel fuel provoking problems in fluidity specially in a low temperature. For the visualization, the experiment was carried out under various conditions of ambient pressure, injection pressure and fuel temperature. The test was made by three different types of diesel fuels, conventional diesel, BD20 and BD100. In summary, this research aims to investigate combustion characteristics in the application of bio-diesel fuels and compare the results with performance of conventional diesel fuel. This experimental data may provide fundamentals of spray and combustion of bio-diesel fuels at a low temperature and contribute to the development of bio-diesel engines in future.

  • The reformed bio-diesel fuel irradiated by the ultrasonic wave is applied to the diesel engine of common rail in common use recently. This study has the object to examine the properties of engine performance and discharged materials. The bio-diesel fuel is mixed and used with the diesel fuel in common use at the ratio of $20\%\;or\; 100\%$. The ultrasonic energy is irradiated to the individually mixed fuel in order to reform the fuel. This fuel is applied to the engine in this experiment. And It is compared and analyzed from the experimental results with two cases irradiating the ultrasonic wave and no irradiating.

  • Modern diesel vehicle has to comply with the EURO IV, V regulation with low level of particulate matter and smoke emission Moreover, emission standards of each countries are becoming stringent in advanced countries such as USA and Europe. Because Bio-diesel is similar to diesel fuel, it is essential to judge the environmental and health effects deriving from the use of Bio-diesel in diesel engine. The deterioration characteristics of emission in accordance with aging vehicles must be regulated for Bio-diesel. Therefore, under 1200 driving hours, 220,000km driving distance condition and full load, the deterioration characteristics of emission were estimated. We could reduce sulfur contents of fuel, particulate matter and smoke emission by using Bio-diesel and conform the influence of engine performance, emission, and fuel consumption by Bio-diesel deterioration

  • Spray characteristics of conventional diesel fuel and bio-diesel fuel(methyl-ester of soybean oil) were compared, in terms of spray tip penetration and spray angle, by using a commercial high pressure common rail injection system for light-duty DI Diesel engines. The experiments were carried out under the non-evaporating condition at ambient density(8.8, $15.6 kg/\textrm{m}^3$) and injection pressure(75, 135 MPa). The experimental method was based on a laser sheet scattering technique. Spray tip penetrations of bio-diesel fuel were longer, on the whole, than those of conventional diesel fuel, except for lower injection pressure(75 MPa) under lower ambient density$(8.8 kg/\textrm{m}^3)$. But spray near angle and spray far angle of bio-diesel fuel were smaller than those of conventional diesel fuel, implying spray angle is related to the growth rate of spray tip penetration. The experimental results of spray tip penetration agreed well with the calculated values by the Wakuri et al.'s correlation based on the momentum theory.

  • A demand for bio-diesel oil increases as one of solution for exhaustion of fossil fuel and reduction of $CO_2$ emission, and research on bio-diesel is being carried out. Bio-diesel oil is mainly esterified from vegetable oil with methanol in order to use for fuel on diesel engine and has demerit that costs are increased as compared with directly using like non-esterified one. Bio-diesel oil within 3% mixed with gas oil is used at present, proportion of bio-diesel oil will be increase by 5% in future. We judged that wasted soybean oil non-esterified could be used on diesel engine with an electronic fuel injection according to previous researches with a mechanical fuel injection. A performance test using only gas oil, gas oil with esterified bio-diesel oil 5% and wasted soybean oil non-esterified 5% on diesel engine with the electronic fuel injection were carried out. It is noticed that gas oil with wasted soybean oil non-esterified 5% has more similar characteristics to gas oil than gas oil with esterified bio-diesel oil 5%.

  • Non-esterified bio-diesel fuel saves cost by no esterified process and its performance was more similar to diesel oil than esterified bio-diesel fuel when the fuel blended 95% diesel oil and 5% it was used on diesel engine with electronic control system. A performance optimization is necessary for application of non-esterified bio-diesel fuel blended with diesel oil 95% on the latest diesel engine. In this study, test using fractional factorial design was accomplished at 25% and 50% partial load in order to evaluate influence of controllable 6 factors on responses such as specific fuel consumption, nitrogen oxides and coefficiency of variation of indicated mean effective pressure as basic experiment for performance optimization of this fuel. It is cleared that the injection timing and common rail pressure of 6 factors are mainly effective and its effect level is different according to load.
