Influence of Varying Level of Sodium Bicarbonate on Milk Yield and Its Composition in Early Lactating Nili Ravi Buffaloes

  • Influence of varying level of sodium bicarbonate (SB) supplementation on milk yield and its composition was examined in a randomized complete block design in early lactating Nili Ravi buffaloes during summer. Four iso-nitrogenous and iso-caloric diets were formulated. The diet 0B contained 0 while LB, MB and HB diets contained 0.50, 1.0 and 1.50% SB levels, respectively. The diets were randomly allotted to twenty buffaloes, five in each group. A linear increase in nutrient and water intake was recorded with increasing SB level. Buffaloes fed MB and HB diets showed higher nitrogen balance than those fed 0B and LB diets. A significant increase in blood pH and serum bicarbonate was noticed with increasing SB level. Urine pH increased significantly with increased SB level. A linear increase in milk yield was also noticed with increasing SB level. Milk fat% increased significantly in buffaloes fed MB and HB diets compared with those fed 0B and LB diets. Buffaloes fed HB diet had higher conception rate and less services per conception than those fed 0B diet. This study indicated that a high SB diet not only increased dry matter and water intake, milk yield, milk fat% but also increased conception rate in early lactating buffaloes during summer.

  • We introduce a high-performance microbial fuel cell (MFC) that was operated using a 0.1M bicarbonate buffer as the cathodic electrolyte. The MFC had a 136.42 $mW/m^2$ maximum power density under continuous feeding of 5 mM acetate as fuel. Results of the electrode potential measurements showed that the cathode potential of the bicarbonate-buffered condition was higher than the phosphate-buffered condition, although the phosphate condition had less interfacial resistance between the membrane and electrolyte. Therefore, we posit here that the increased power of the bicarbonate-buffered MFC may be caused by the higher cathode potential rather than by the interfacial membrane-electrolyte resistance.

중탄산나트륨이 첨가된 여과집진기를 이용한 염화수소의 제거 (Removal of HCl Using a Bag-Filter with Addition of Bicarbonate)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 배기가스로부터 생성된 신성가스 중 HCl의 제거를 위해 기존의 건식 반응기와 여과집진기를 사용하였다. 흡착제는 중탄산나트륨($NaHCO_3$)를 시용하였으며 흡착제($NaHCO_3$) 의 성능, 효율을 평가한다. 이러한 중탄산나트륨의 성능, 제거효율을 평가하여, 중탄산나트륨이 건식 반응기에서의 최적의 운전조건을 분석하였다. 체류시간, 당량비, 온도, 여과집진기의 압력등을 운전조건으로 하였으며 체류시간은 1.5sec로 고정하였고, 중탄산나트륨 주입비(당량비)를 1SR, 1.25SR으로 조절하였고, 온도는 $160^{\circ}C$, $180^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$로 하였고, 여과집진기의 압력은 210mmAq, 230mmAq, 250mmAq로 하였다. 이 연구에서는 온도가 큰 영향은 없고, 압력과 당량비가 많은 영향을 끼치는 것을 알 수 있다. 최적의 운전조건은 주입비 1SR에서 $180^{\circ}C$, 230mmAq이다. 이 조건에서의 제거율은 99.50%로 나왔다.

Rocuronium과 Lidocaine 또는 Sodium Bicarbonate의 혼합투여가 Rocuronium 정맥주사 동안의 회피 반응, 평균 동맥압 및 심박수에 미치는 효과 비교 (A Comparison of the Effect of Lidocaine or Sodium Bicarbonate Mixed with Rocuronium on Withdrawal Movement, Mean Arterial Pressure and Heart Rate during Rocuronium Injection)

  • Purpose: This study was performed to find out the effects of lidocaine or 8.4% sodium bicarbonate mixed with rocuronium on mean arterial pressure, heart rate and withdrawal movement. Methods: Data collection was performed from December 15, 2006 through May 31, 2007. Seventy-five patients with American Society Anesthesiologist (ASA) physical status I & II, under general anesthesia, were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups: R group (RG) received rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg; RL group (RLG), rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg mixed with 2 mL of 2% lidocaine; RS group (RSG), rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg with the same volume of 8.4% sodium bicarbonate. Mean arterial pressure, heart rate and withdrawal movement were observed from its injection until 5 min after endotracheal intubation. Results: The incidence of withdrawal movement with its corresponding injections was 72%, 40% and 4% in RG, RLG and RSG, respectively (p<.001). Score of withdrawal movement was the lowest in RSG of all groups (p<.001). While mean arterial pressure (p=.011) in RSG decreased significantly, and heart rate (p=.003) in RG increased more with its injection than before induction of anesthesia. Conclusion: Administration of the equivalent volume of 8.4% sodium bicarbonate with rocuronium is more effective than that of lidocaine with rocuronium compared with rocuronium only, in preventing withdrawal movement and in stabilizing mean arterial pressure and heart rate.

Quality Improvement of Frozen and Chilled Beef biceps femoris with the Application of Salt-bicarbonate Solution

  • The effects of salt and bicarbonate solution on overall meat quality in beef biceps femoris muscle were investigated with the application of chilling and freezing conditions. Muscles were injected to a target of 120% of original meat weight with a solution containing 1.2 M sodium chloride, 0.25 M sodium bicarbonate and 0.1% ascorbic acid (pH 7.2). Half of the meat samples, considered as chill treatment and chill control, were stored at $4^{\circ}C$ up to five days; while the other half, frozen treatment and frozen control, were kept in a freezer at $-20^{\circ}C$ for seven days. Compared with untreated control, treated meats had higher water holding capacity (p<0.05), lower drip loss (p<0.05) and lower shear force (p<0.07) with higher overall acceptability (p<0.05) in sensory evaluation. Morphological observations demonstrated smooth and gummy meat surface due to the solubilization of myofibrillar proteins and the distortion of connective tissue in treated raw meats; and in the case of cooked meat, treatment caused the fragmentation of myofibrils, which might be responsible for a lower shear value in salt-bicarbonate treated beef biceps femoris muscle.

화학 팽창제의 가스 발생과 쿠키의 텍스쳐 비교 (Gas Production of Chemical Leavening Agents and Effects on Textures of Cookies)

  • 팽창제 종류에 따른 시간별 가스 발생 속도 및 쿠키 텍스쳐에 대하여 살펴보았다. 본 실험에 사용된 가스 발생 장치에 의해서도 가스 발생 속도에 따라 크게 3타입으로 구분할 수 있었으며 이는 소암모늄명반을 제외하고는 문헌의 결과와 일치하였다. 속효성 평창제로는 주석산, 주석영, 후말산, 소암모늄명반이었고 이단 반응성 팽창제로는 산성피로인산나트륨, 무수모노인산칼슘, 소명반이었으며, 지효성 팽창제로는 중탄산암모늄, 중탄산나트륨, 글루코노-델타-락톤, 염화암모늄 등이었다. 제품 팽창률이 가장 높았던 것은 중탄산암모늄이었고 후미 면에서 가장 깨끗한 것은 글루코노-델타-락톤이었다. 팽창률이 높을수록 texture profile graph상에서 multi-peak를 나타내어 brittleness가 뛰어났으며 단순회귀분석에 의해, 팽창률과 brittleness간에 상관관계가 있음을 입증하였다$(r^2=0.8176)$. 중탄산암모늄을 사용한 쿠키 제품의 brittleness가 가장 높았다.

Effect of sodium bicarbonate supplementation on two different performance indicators in sports: a systematic review with meta-analysis

  • [Purpose] Sodium bicarbonate shows ergogenic potential in physical exercise and sports activities, although there is no strong evidence which performance markers show the greatest benefit from this supplement. This study evaluated the effects of sodium bicarbonate supplementation on time trial performance and time to exhaustion in athletes and sports practitioners. [Methods] A systematic review was conducted using three databases, including 17 clinical trials. Among these clinical trials, 11 were considered eligible for the meta-analysis according to the criteria for the assessment of methodological quality using the PEDro Scale. Time to exhaustion was assessed in six studies, while time trial performance was evaluated in five studies. [Results] A significant beneficial effect of supplementation on time to exhaustion was found in a random effects model (1.48; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.49 to 2.48). There was no significant effect of supplementation on time trial performance in a fixed effects model (slope = -0.75; 95% CI, -2.04 to 0.55) relative to a placebo group. [Conclusion] Sodium bicarbonate has the potential to improve sports performance in general, especially in terms of time to exhaustion.

고온기 육계의 수송 스트레스에 대한 버퍼제 급여에 따른 닭고기 품질 및 PSE 발생에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Dietary Buffer Material for Chicken Meat Grades and PSE Incidence in Broilers under Transport Heat Stress)

  • 고온기 때 육계 수송 스트레스를 줄이기 위한 대비책으로 농가에서 출하 2일전에 버퍼제(sodium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate, magnesium sulfate)를 급여함으로 육계의 품질에 미치는 영향을 구명하기 위해 수행하였다 닭고기의 품질 $1^+$ 등급 평가에서 버퍼제를 급여하지 않는 대조구에서 4%를 차지하였으나 sodium phosphate 급여구가 8%, sodium bicarbonate 급여구 14%, magnesium sulfate 급여구가 28%로 대조구에 비하여 버퍼제를 급여한 처리구에서 $1^+$등급 출현율이 증가하였다. PSE 발생율은 대조구에서 경증 및 중증 모두 합하여 92%를 차지하였으나, sodium phosphate 급여구가 88%, sodium bicarbonate 급여구 28%, magnesium sulfate 급여구가 56%로 대조구에 비하여 버퍼제를 급여한 처리구에서 PSE 발생율이 현저히 저하되었다. 닭고기 외관의 멍은 대조구에서는 1~6 cm의 멍이 32%를 차지하였으나, sodium phosphate 급여구는 22%, sodium bicarbonate 급여구 24%, magnesium sulfate 급여구가 44%로 magnesium sulfate 급여구를 제외하고는 대조구에 비해 멍 발생율의 8~10% 정도 저하하였다. 닭고기의 명도($L^*$) 값의 변화는 가슴 근육 부위에서 대조구가 67.88을 나타내었고, sodium phosphate 급여구가 67.05, sodium bicarbonate 급여구 66.27, magnesium sulfate 급여구가 65.89로 magnesium sulfate 급여구에 명도가 가장 낮은 경향을 나타내었고, 전체적으로 대조구에 비해 버퍼제를 급여한 구에서 명도 값이 저하되었다. 상기와 같이 고온기 때 육계 수송 스트레스를 줄이기 위하여 버퍼제(sodium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate, magnesium sulfate)를 급여함으로 사계 및 닭고기의 이상 도체를 줄일 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

광촉매를 이용한 Humic Acid 광부해시 공존물질이 광분해에 미치는 영향 (The Influence of Coexisting Material on the Photocatalytic Removal of Humic Acid)

  • This study aimed at improving the $TiO_2$ photocatalytic degradation of HA. A set of tests was first conducted in the dark to study the adsorption of HA at different coexisting material concentration. Adsorption rate increased with adding cation ion but decreased with adding bicarbonate ion. The photodegradation of HA in the presence of UV irradiation was investigated as a function of different experimental condition: initial concentration of HA, $TiO_2$ weight, pH, air flow rate and coexisting material. It was increased either at low pH or by adding cation ion. The increase of cation strength in aqueous solution could provide a favorable condition for adsorption of HA on the $TiO_2$ surface and therefore enhance the photodegradation rate. It was found that bicarbonate ions slowed down the degradation rate by scavening the hydroxyl radicals.
