Effects of field applications of benomyl on Phomopsis seed decay of early soybeans were investigated at Suwon in 1992 and 1993. Pod and immature seed infections were markedly suppressed by benomyl application at the R6 stage whereas the spray at the R7 stage was not as effective as the spray at R6. When compared with unsprayed plots, benomyl spray at R6 resulted in decrease in Phomopsis seed infection by 37.1% and 73.9%, and increased in frequency of seed germination by 1.8% and 8.0% in 1992 and 1993, respectively. The results indicated that only one spray at early R6 could effectively reduce seed infection by Phomopsis spp.and could be adopted in a disease management program for commercial production of healthy soybean seeds.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of benomyl application at different growth stages on the infection of green pod and seed by Phomopsis spp. and yield in vegetable soybean. One early maturing vegetable soybean variety 'Seokryangputkong' was planted on 20 April at Suwon in 1996. The rate of non-infected green pods by Phomopsis spp. was most highly suppressed by benomyl application once at the R5 stage and twice at R4 and R6 stages. The rate of non-infected green pods was higher in branches than in mainstem, and in upper than in low part of plant. The Phomopsis seed decay at maturity was most highly decreased by benomyl application once at the R6 stage and twice at the R4 and R6 stages. Benomyl application effectively reduced the infection rate of green pod and seeds by Phomopsis spp. and increased the yield of non-infected green pods by 34∼76% and non-infected seeds by 51∼98%.
This study was conducted to clarify the degradation pattern, safety evaluation and penetration ratio of benomyl and bitertanol to apple used as postharvest fungicides during CA(controlled atmosphere) and cold storage. In CA storage, the degradation of benomyl and bitertanol in stored apple was slow at the early stage, while that in cold storage was, on the contrary, faster at the early stage. The initial concentrations of benomyl and bitertanol in apples applied at the standard application concentrations were 2.24 and 1.54mg/kg, respectively, and their residual amounts were below the maximum residue limits, 1mg/kg at 135 and 96 days in CA storage, 115 and 70 days in cold storage, respectively. The half-lives of benomyl and bitertanol in stored apples were 124 and 130 days in CA storage, 101 and 111 days in the cold storage, respectively, indicating that the degradation was faster in cold storage than in CA storage. The residual amount of benomyl and bitertanol in stored apples was retained more in peels than in pulps of apples.
Seed decay of soybean caused by Diaporthe phaseolorum, Colletotrichum truncatum and Cercospora kikuchii is a serious disease when soybean is harvested under warm and wet weather conditions. Benomyl has been used for controlling the disease, however, benomyl application may be limited due to common occurrence of resistance. The efficacy of 21 fungicides against the pathogens was evaluated in vitro. Among the fungicides tested, benomyl, carbendazim, fluazinam, iprodione+propineb, thiophanate-methyl, and triflumizole were found effective and were evaluated for their ability to control the seed pathogens. Fluazinam completely inhibited mycelial growth at a concentration of 100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$\textrm{m}{\ell}$ for D. phaseolorum; and at a concentration of 500 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$\textrm{m}{\ell}$ for C. truncatum and C. kikuchii. $EC_90$ values of fluazinam were similar to that of benomyl. Because fluazinam, iprodione+propineb, and triflumizole were found effective against the seed pathogens, these were subjected for field-testing. Suppression of pod and seed infection by fluazinam and iprodione+propineb was as high as that of benomyl without any reduction in agronomic characters of soybean. This study shows that fluazinam and iprodione+propineb may be used in combination with benomyl to control seed pathogens, manage resistance, and ensure production of high quality soybean seeds.
Current status of pesticide applications in sweet persimmon orchards was investigated through the questionnaire and analysis of the pesticide application records from 62 growers in 2000 and 17 growers in 2001 in Jinju, Sacheon, Changwon, Changyoung, and Gimhae in Korea. Average yearly application was 7.6 times in 2000 and 7.7 times in 2001, concentrated in June and July. The kinds of fungicides and insecticides used were 36 and 34 items in 2000, and 22 and 23 items in 2001, respectively. Application of pesticides was mostly finished by mid-September. Fungicides such as mancozeb, thiophanate-methyl, and benomyl were most frequently used in 2000, and lime sulfur, benomyl and carbendazim in 2001. Insecticides such as deltamethrin, methidathion, and fenitrothion + fenvalerate were frequently used in both years. About one-half of the pesticides being used by the growers was not registered for persimmon in Korea.
Effect of the fungicide mepanipyrim on the resistant and sensitive isolates of Botrytis cinerea was studied in vitro and also tested to control Botrytis rot of strawberry, cucumber and grape in the field. These isolates were selected by relative mycelial growth and spore germination on potato dextrose agar(PDA) incorporated with $100{\mu}g\;a.i./ml$ of benomyl and procymidone, respectively, compared to the unamended PDA. Mycelial growth of the selected resistant isolates was significantly inhibited by mepanipyrim but the inhibition rate was similar to other fungicides belong to benzimidazole or dicarboximide, although spore germination was not inhibited even by the higher concentration of mepanipyrim. When the benomyl and procymidone resistant isolates were inoculated to cucumber leaves, lesion development was significantly inhibited with application of $250{\mu}g\;a.i./ml$ of mepanipyrim but not with that of benomyl and procymidone. In addition, when $250{\mu}g\;a.i./ml$ of mepanipyrim was applied to strawberry, cucumber, and grape in the field, the control of Botrytis rot was significantly different from that of the untreated control(Duncan's multiple range test, p<0.05). The results suggested that mepanipyrim might be an alternative fungicide for the control of benomyl- and procymidone-resistant pathogens of Botrytis rot.
To select the effective fungicides for the control of leaf spot disease of jujube tree (Zizyphus jujuba) caused by Phoma sp., inhibitory effects of 26 fungicides for mycelial growth were investigated at $250{\mu}g\;a.i./m{\ell}$. In the test, eight fungicides were selected and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for mycelial growth and an inhibitory effect for spore germination were investigated. Among the fungicides, myclobutanil, hexaconazole, and triflumizole were excluded in control effect tests because of their relatively high MICs. MICs were ranged $10-50{\mu}g\;a.i./m{\ell}$ for benomyl, carbendazim + kasugamycin (CK), and thiophanate-methyl. triflumizole (TT), and $50-250{\mu}g\;a.i./m{\ell}$ for iprodione + propineb (IT) and iminoctadine-triacelate (IT). However, benomyl and IP showed very low inhibitory effect on conidial germination. When the fungicides were sprayed on the seedlings before the leaves were inoculated with conidial suspension of Phoma sp., the protective values of CK and TT were around 70% at 1,000 ppm and around 90% at 2,000 ppm. The protective values were around 70% at 2,000 ppm (benomyl), 4,000 ppm (IP), and 8,000 ppm (IT). When the fungicides were sprayed after inoculation, benomyl showed the highest curative values of over 90% at 1,000 ppm and the values of CK and TT ranged $70{\sim}80%$ at 1,000 ppm. However, IP and IT had little or no effect on therapy of the disease. IT caused necrotic phytotoxicity on the leaves of jujube seedlings. As results, the best fungicides for the protection of jujube trees from leaf spot disease were CK (2,000 ppm) and TT (2,000 ppm) and for the remedy of the tree, benomyl (1,000 ppm) was the best. Therefore, alternate application of benomyl and CK or TT will be effective in the disease control.
Pesticide risk assessment for pesticide operators as well as for consumers has become one of the pesticide regulatory tools to reduce any unreasonable adverse health effects from pesticide use. The risk for pesticide operators can be quantified by comparing the acceptable operator exposure level(AOEL) with exposure level during pesticide application. This study is to evaluate the risk of benzimidazole fungicides application worker. The exposure level of pesticide applicators were calculated using Japanese operator exposure study tested with EPN 45% EC. The AOELs for pesticides were obtained dividing relevant lowest no observed abuse effect levels(NOAELs) for the exposure scenario into uncertainty factor, 100. For the non-cancer and cancer occupational risk assessment, $Q_1^*$ produced by US/EPA and life time average daily dose(LADD) calculated from average daily dose(ADD), treatment days per year, worked years for life time were used. Operator exposure for benzimidazole fungicides application were benomyl 0.2, carbendazim 0.36 and thiophanate-methyl 0.42 mg/kg/day. Short-term AOELs for benomyl, carbendazim and thiophanate-methyl were 0.3, 0.1, and 0.2 mg/kg/day, and long-term AOEL were 0.025, 0.025, 0.08 mg/kg/day, respectively. LADDs were benomyl 0.0038, carbendazim 0.0067, thiophanate-methyl 0.0081 mg/kg/day. The ratios of exposure to AOEL were $0.28{\sim}1.5$ for short-term and $3.73{\sim}9.88$ for long-term. Cancer risk for operator were $9.12{\times}10^{-6}$ for benomyl, $1.61{\times}10^{-5}$ for carbendazim and $1.13{\times}10^{-4}$ for thiophanate-methyl by the standard application scenario. The result showed 3 fungicides exceed the risk criteria, $1.0{\times}10^{-6}$. The above risk assessments were based upon conservative assumptions and therefore are believed to be protective of the applicator. To refine the risk at the more actual conditions, further risk assessment with more realistic data would be needed.
This study was conducted in Bahar and Lalehjin, Hamadan, Iran to assess the biocontrol efficacy of Coniothyrium minitans Campbell against potato white mold caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary under field and greenhouse conditions. In addition, the resistance of common potato cultivars against S. sclerotiorum was determined in a greenhouse experiment. After straw inoculation of six potato cultivars (Pashandi, Istambouli, Agria, Marfauna, Alpha and Spartaan) with S. sclerotiorum, the least disease severity was observed in Spartaan and Marfauna. Agria showed the most susceptibility to S. sclerotiorum. Compared with the healthy control, different concentrations of C. minitans conidia ($10^7$, $10^8$ and $10^9$ conidia/mL) reduced disease severity under greenhouse condition, and a concentration $10^9$ was the most effective treatment. During 2008 and 2009, four field trials were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of C. minitans in different soil and aerial applications on disease incidence of potato white mold. In 2008, soil application of $Contans^{(R)}$ WG (a commercial product of C. minitans) showed the greatest biocontrol capacity whereas soil application of solid-substrate C. minitans was found inferior when compared with other treatments in both Bahar and Lalehjin field sites. In 2009, benomyl application was the most effective treatment in reducing disease incidence in both tested field sites.

BACKGROUND: The fungicide of benomyl, a benzimidazole group, has been commonly used for pesticides against fungal diseases in the world. However, benomyl is rapidly hydrolyzed in the environment after using to control plant diseases and has adverse effects by generating carbendazim, which is toxic to plants, humans, and the environment. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, the decomposition effect of carbendazim, a degradation product of benomyl was conducted in pot and field after making a prototype of benomyl-degrading microbial agent (BDMA). We found that the carbendazim-degrading microbial agent (CDMA) (105, 106, and 107 cfu/g soil) decomposed carbendazim by 50% or more in all the treatments, compared to the untreated control in the pot tests after four weeks. The effect of 100% decomposition of carbendazim was observed at 7 days after treatment, when the prototype of BDMA was apllied at 10-folds dilution in the field. The decomposition effect at more than 60% and plant growth promoting effect were observed after 7 days of the treatment, compared with the untreated group in the second field experiment, treated with commercially available concentrations of 500-folds and 1,000-folds. CONCLUSION(S): These results might represent that the BDMA would decompose carbendazim effectively, a decomposition product of the fungicide benomyl, remaining in agricultural area, and it could be utilized practically by using a low dilution rate.
