  • The interconversion barriers between two twisted conformers of four oxygen-containing cyclohexene analogues have been investigated utilizing a periodic hindered pseudorotational model, molecular mechanics (MM3) calculations, and previously reported far-infrared spectra. The six-fold pseudorotational potential energy function satisfactorily fits the observed bending transitions. The interconversion barrier heights calculated from the pseudorotational model show excellent agreement with those determined from two-dimensional potential energy surfaces for the ring-bending and ring-twisting vibrations. The barriers to interconversion range from 3350 $cm^{-1}$ (9.6 kcal/mol) to 3890 $cm^{-1}$ (11.1 kcal/mol) for four oxygen-containing cyclohexene analogues.

  • The study deals with the vibration of a beam whose flexural and centroidal axes are not coincident. The elementary bending-twisting theory is employed to derive the equation of motion, in which the effects of rotary inertia are added to the bending displacements and the effects of warping are added to the twist. Bending translation is restricted to one direction so that one bending equation is used instead of two. The equations of motion are solved by using the boundary value problem. The exact natural frequencies are fund from the frequency equation, which is obtained from the condition that the homogeneous system of algebraic equations representing the spatial solution shall not yield a trivial solution. The orthogonal conditions are established, and the principal mode equations of forced vibration are derived. As an example, the cantilevered beam is chosen and the first some natural frequencies and their modal shapes are found.

  • This paper describes the design process of a 3-component load cell with a multiple parallel plate structure which may be used to measure transverse forces and twisting moment simultaneously. Also we have derived equations to predict the bending strains on the surface of the beams in the multiple parallel plate structure under transverse force or twisting moment. It reveals that the bending strains calculated from the derived equations are in good agreement with the results from finite element analysis and experiment. Also we have evaluated the rated output and interference error of each component, which can be efficiently used to design a 3-component load cell with a multiple parallel plate structure.

  • A new three-node triangular shell element based on higher order zig-zag theory is developed for laminated composite shells with multiple delaminations. The present higher order zig-zag shell theory is described in a general curvilinear coordinate system and in general tensor notation. All the complicated curvatures of surface including twisting curvatures can be described in an exact manner in the present shell element because this element is based on geometrically exact surface representation. The displacement field of the proposed finite element includes slope of deflection. which requires continuity between element interfaces. Thus the nonconforming shape function of Specht's three-node triangular plate bending element is employed to interpolate out-of-plane displacement. The present element passes the bending and twisting patch tests in flat surface configurations. The developed element is evaluated through the buckling problems of composite cylindrical shells with multiple delaminations. Through the numerical examples it is demonstrated that the proposed shell element is efficient because it has minimal degrees of freedom per node. The accuracy of the present element is demonstrated in the prediction of buckling loads and buckling modes of shells with multiple delaminations. The present shell element should serve as a powerful tool in the prediction of buckling loads and modes of multi-layered thick laminated shell structures with arbitrary-shaped multiple delaminations.

  • Micromirrors have a wide range of applications such as optical switches, laser scanners, and digital projection displays. Due to their low performances and high costs, however, practical applications of micromirrors are quite limited. At present micromirrors demand not only a better design but also a simple fabrication process. In this study a twisting-type micromirror that can be driven by two thermal bimorph actuators bending in opposite directions is designed from electro-thermo-mechanical theories and fabricated through a simple MEMS process. Each actuator consists of $SiO_2$ and gold thin-film layers. Simplified analytical model has been built to optimize the performance of micromirror. Due to unexpected resistance increase of metal film and alignment mismatch during fabrication process, experimental rotation angles of micromirrors are about $11^{\circ}$ at applied voltages less than 0.6V. From numerical simulation and analytical studies, however, the next design can provide rotation angles over $20^{\circ}$ at the same applied voltage.

  • Based on the design requirements(size, strength, structure, weight, and etc.) for the rubber-tired AGT vehicle, carbody made of aluminum alloy is designed. The analysis of strength and stiffness is performed in the designed carbody, which results in the modification for optimal shapes and structures. It consists of a under frame, side frame, roof frame, end frame and forehead frame. After the carbody manufactured, tests are performed, which are vertical load test, longitudinal compressive load test, twisting load test, twisting natural frequency measurement, bending natural frequency measurement and 3 points supporting test. Results of them can guarantee a structural safety.

  • This paper proposes a real-time technique for simulating large rotational deformations. Modal analysis based on a linear strain tensor has been shown to be suitable for real-time simulation, but is accurate only for moderately small deformations. In the present work, we identify the rotational component of an infinitesimal deformation, and extend linear modal analysis to track that component. We then develop a procedure to integrate the small rotations occurring al the nodal points. An interesting feature of our formulation is that it can implement both position and orientation constraints in a straightforward manner. These constraints can be used to interactively manipulate the shape of a deformable solid by dragging/twisting a set of nodes, Experiments show that the proposed technique runs in real-time even for a complex model, and that it can simulate large bending and/or twisting deformations with acceptable realism.

  • Recently, the technology for flexible electronics such as flexible smart phone, foldable displays, and bendable battery is under active development. With approaching the real commercialization of flexible electronics, the electrical and mechanical reliability of flexible electronics have become significantly important because they will be used under various mechanical deformations such as bending, twisting, stretching, and so on. These mechanical deformations result in performance degradation of electronic devices due to several mechanical problems such as cracking, delamination, and fatigue. Therefore, the understanding of relationship between mechanical loading and electrical performance is one of the most critical issues in flexible electronics for expecting the lifetime of products. Here, we have investigated the effect of monotonic tensile and cyclic deformations on metal interconnect to provide a guideline for improving the reliability of flexible interconnect.
