  • This paper is concerned with an optimal control suspension system using the preview information of road input based on a quarter car model. The main purpose of the control is to combine good vibration isolation characteristics with improved attitude control. The optimal control law is derived with the use of calculus of variation, consisting of three parts. The first part is a full state feedback term that includes integral control acting on the suspension deflection to ensure zero steady-state deflection in response to static body forces and ramp road inputs. The second part is a feed-forward term which compensates for the body forces when they can be detected, and the third part depends on previewed road input. The performance of the suspension is evaluated in terms of frequency domain characteristics and time responses to ramp road input and cornering forces. The effects of each part of the suspension controller on the system behavior are examined.

  • We propose a new estimation method for rate adjustment in the face of a packet loss in the TFRC protocol, a TCP-Friendly congestion control protocol for UDP flows. Previous methods respond in a sensitive way to a single packet loss, resulting in oscillatory transmission behavior. This is an undesirable for multimedia services demanding constant bandwidth. The proposed TFRC provides more smooth and fair (against TCP flows) transmission through collective response based on multiple packets loss events. We show our "Exponential smoothing method" performs better than known "Weight smoothing method" in terms of smoothness and fairness.

  • The effects of fillers on the wet end dewatering and paper properties were investigated in order to confirm the possibility that the fillers can be used as a means for saving energy in papermaking process. The performance of GCC, PCC and talcs were evaluated. The dewatering in wire and wet press was improved by the increase of filler addition, but it was observed that the dewatering behavior was depended by the filler characteristics. PCC was superior to other fillers in the bulk, opacity, air permeability and stiffness while the lowest tensile and burst index were obtained. We found that the response on the wet end dewatering and paper properties were affected greatly by the filler characteristics including particle shape and size.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present a design procedure of coulomb friction dampers for controlling elastic and inelastic responses of building structures. The equivalent damping and frequency increased by the friction damper are estimated using ATC-40 and ATC-55 procedures which provide equivalent linear system for bilinear one, and then a design formula to achieve target performance response level by friction damper is presented. It is identified that there exists error between the responses obtained by this formula and by performing nonlinear analysis and the features of the error vary according to the hardening ratio, yield strength ratio, and structural period. Equations for compensating this er개r are reposed based on the least square method, and the results from numerical analyses indicate that the error is significantly reduced, and the proposed formula can be used without much error for designing coulomb friction damper for retrofitting a structure showing elastic or inelastic behavior.

  • In the recent years, as the research and the development of micro and precision machinery become active, the interest of micro actuators using SMA(Shape Memory Alloy) has been increased. The dynamic characteristic analysis of SMA is necessary for actuator application and many common researches report the material characteristics of SMA sufficiently. However, the research on dynamic characteristics is very deficient. In this paper, the helical spring are fabricated with NiTi SMA wire of high resistivity. The force, response speed, temperature, and displacement are measured by digital force gauge, infrared thermometer, and laser displacement sensor so that the dynamic characteristics of this SMA is analyzed. Also, bidirectional actuator was fabricated and experimented fir its performance.

  • The current seismic design criteria of the Korea Design Specifications for Highway Bridge (KDSHB 2000) adopted the seismic design concept and requirements of the AASHTO specifications. In order to obtain full ductile behavior under seismic loads, i.e. when applied seismic force is larger than design flexural strength of column section, a response modification factor is used. For the moderate seismicity regions, a design based on required ductility and required transverse reinforcement might be a reasonable approach. Ductility demand design or performance based design might be an appropriate approach especially for regions of moderate seismic risk. The procedure and application of this design approach are presented in this paper.

  • The peer-to-peer (P2P) systems have Brown significantly over last few years due to their hish potential of sharing various resources. Super-peer based P2P systems have been found very effective by dividing the peers into two layers, SP (Super-Peer) and OP (Ordinary-Peer). In this paper, we present ISP2P (Intelligent Super-peer based P2P system), which allows us to choose the best SP. Through analyzing capacity and similarity between SP and OP, we can help OPs to select the most appropriate SP respectively. Proposed system can improve the performance of the average response time by superior SP, reduce the bandwidth cost by small path length due to content similarity and solve frequent SP replacement problem by considering similarity of user behavior.

  • Interaction behaviors of high-speed compressible viscous flow and thermal-structural response of structure are presented. The compressible viscous laminar flow behavior based on the Navier-Stokes equations is predicted by using an adaptive cell-centered finite-element method. The energy equation and the quasi-static structural equations for aerodynamically heated structures are solved by applying the Galerkin finite-element method. The finite-element formulation and computational procedure are described. The performance of the combined method is evaluated by solving Mach 4 flow past a flat plate and comparing with the solution from the finite different method. To demonstrate their interaction, the high-speed flow, structural heat transfer, and deformation phenomena are studied by applying the present method to Mach 10 flow past a flat plate.

  • Buildings which was constructed before 1988 were not satisfied seismic design code. Thus, most of these buildings have to retrofit for remodeling. This study proposed the steel slit damper system with displacement-amplification device. It could maximize the effectiveness of a damper system in controlling seismic response of a building by amplifying story drift induced to damper. In this study, the proposed system was verified the effect of displacement-amplification using the analytical and experimental study. From the analysis and experiment, it was found that the propsed damping system showed a stable hysteric behavior with excellent energy dissipation capacity. Therefore the proposed system will make a good seismic performance and economical benefits.

  • In this paper, a new uni-axial bushing model for vehicle dynamics analysis is proposed. Bushing components of a vehicle suspension system are tested to capture the nonlinear and hysteric behavior of the typical rubber bushing elements using the MTS machine. The results of the tests are used to develop the Bouc-Wen bushing model. The Bouc-Wen model is employed to represent the hysteretic characteristics of the bushing. ADAMS program is used for the identification process and VisualDOC program is also used to find the optimal coefficients of the model. Genetic algorithm is employed to carry out the optimal design. A numerical example is suggested to verify the performance of the proposed model.
