To detect faults and monitor thinning on a pipe, many people use ultra sonic sensors that are operated in high frequency range. Because there are many modes in high frequency range, it is difficult to find faults and monitor pipe thinning on a structure. If we deal with signals in a low frequency range which include only A0 wave and S0 wave, the information of monitoring and diagnosis can be easily obtained. In this paper, the technique for exciting low frequency range using ultra sonic sensors is proposed. The main idea of the proposed method comes from the beat phenomenon. The beat frequency is equal to the absolute value of the difference in frequency of the two waves. If the beat frequency is tuned by two ultra waves, we can excite A0 mode and S0 mode of structures. To verify the proposed method, we have performed a steel plate and pipe experiments. Experimental results show that two ultra sonic sensors can well excite low frequency range.
Korean bell is a macroscopically axi-symmetrical structure, but has a slight asymmetry due to complex patterns and casting irregularity. Small asymmetry separates one vibration mode into a mode pair with slight frequency difference. The mode pair interferes and creates a beat. The vivid beat with an appropriate period makes the bell sound magnificent and lively feeling. In this study, we propose a method to make the vivid beat using artificial dumshoi. This method creates the vivid beat by designing artificial dumshoi that overwhelms the bell asymmetry. To this end, the asymmetry of Korean bell is quantified by analyzing the beat period data of a number of Korean bells cast in modern times. Based on the measured beat period data, the magnitude of asymmetry is quantified using an equivalent bell model and artificial dumshoi is applied. The movement of mode pair by dumshoi is predicted through finite element analysis. Finally, a design example of the artificial dumshoi for clear beat is introduced.
In this study, beat control method using an equivalent ring model is proposed to control beat period of a slightly asymmetric ring. Slight asymmetry in a ring generates mode pair and the interaction of the mode pair makes beat in vibration and sound. In a ring, as a simplified bell type structure, mode data are measured and an equivalent ring is determined so that the measured mode condition is satisfied. By the finite element analysis on the equivalent ring, changes of mode pair condition are predicted when local mass is attached or the local thickness is decreased. The predicted results are compared with the experimental result and the validity of the proposed method is verified.
This study proposes a method of an equivalent bell model in order to tune the beat period of a Korean bell. In a Korean bell having a slight asymmetry, each circumferential mode splits into a mode pair which has a slight difference in frequency, and the interaction of the mode pair makes a beat in vibration and sound. An equivalent bell model which consists of an axi-symmetric bell and an equivalent point mass, has the same mode property as in a real bell. The equivalent bell model is constructed by the finite element analysis based upon the theory of a revolutionary shell. Using the equivalent bell model, the beat period is predicted when the bell thickness is locally decreased to improve the beat property. The predicted result is verified by experiment on a test bell. The proposed method is useful to save the time required for tuning the beat period of a large bell.

The gas compressor is one of the important machine in the petrochemical industry. It is likely to have high vibration problems due to having large reaction source and structural characteristic. In this paper we analyze the cause of high vibration in the reciprocating compressor and present a solution to this problems. By performing this case study, we confirm the effectiveness of vibration reduction through excitation source changes.
A numerical investigation on forces and flow around three square cylinders in side-by-side arrangement is conducted at a Reynolds number Re = 150 with the cylinder center-to-center spacing ratio L/W = 1.1 ~ 9.0, where W is the cylinder side width. The flowat this Re is assumed to be two-dimensional, incompressible, and Newtonian. The flow simulation is conducted by using ANSYS-Fluent. The flow around the three side-by-side cylinders entails some novel flow physics, involving the interaction between the gap and free-stream side flows as well as that between the two gap flows. An increase in L/W from 1.1 to 9.0 leads to five distinct flow regimes, viz., base-bleed flow (L/W < 1.4), flip-flopping flow (1.4 < L/W < 2.1), symmetrically biased beat flow (2.1 < L/W < 2.6), non-biased beat flow (2.6 < L/W < 7.25) and weak interaction flow (7.25 < L/W < 9.0). The gap flow behaviors, time-averaged and fluctuating fluid forces, time-averaged pressure, recirculation bubble, formation length, and wake width in each flow regime are discussed in detail.
Liquefied natural gas takes up six hundredths of the volume of natural gas, which makes storage and transportation much easier. To send out natural gas via a pipeline network across the nation, high-pressure LNG pumps supply highly compressed LNG to high-pressure vaporization facilities. The Number of high-pressure LNG pumps determined the send-out amount in LNG receiving terminal. So it is main equipment at LNG production process and should be maintained on best conditions. In this paper, to find out the cause of high beat vibration at cryogenic pumps, vibration and motor current signal analysis have been performed. High vibration of cryogenic pumps could be reduced due to the modification of motor rotor.

The nonlinear vibration of moving viscoelastic belts excited by the eccentricity of pulleys is investigated through experimental and analytical methods. Laboratory measurements demonstrate the nonlinearities in the responses of the belt, particularly in the resonance region and with the variation of tension. The measurements of the belt motion were made using a noncontact laser sensor Jump and hysteresis phenomenon are observed experimentally and are studied with a model which considers the nonlinear relation of belt stretch. An ordinary differential equation is derived as a working form of the belt equation of motion. Numerical results show good agreements with the experimental observations, which demonstrates the nonlinearity of viscoelastic moving belts

A slight asymmetry exists in Korean beslls due to decorative sculptures, carved figures and casting irregularities. In this study, the influence of the asymmetry on the bell's best frequencies and mode shapes is studied by using finite element method and modal testing. Also measurement techniques of nodal lines and damping ratios of bells with very small beat frequencies are discussed.

This paper presents the vibration analysis of a deploying beam with spin when the beam has a time-dependent spinning speed. In the previous studies for the deploying beams with spin, the spinning speed was time-independent. However, it is more reasonable to consider the time-dependent spinning speed. The present study introduces the time-dependent spinning speed in the modeling. The Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and von Karman nonlinear strain theory are used together to derive the equations of motion. After the equations of motion are transformed into the weak forms, the weak forms are discretized. The natural frequency and dynamic response are obtained. The effect of the time-dependent spinning speed on the dynamic response is studied.
