A band gap refers to a certain frequency range where the propagation of mechanical waves is prohibited. This work focuses on engineering three-dimensional Kelvin lattices having external band gaps at low audible frequency ranges using a gradient-based design optimization method. Elastic wave propagation in an infinite periodic lattice is investigated by employing the Bloch theorem. We model the ligaments using a shear-deformable beam model obtained by consistent linearization in a geometrically exact beam theory. For a given lattice topology, we enlarge band gap sizes by controlling the configuration of the beam neutral axis and cross-section thickness that are smoothly parameterized by B-spline basis functions within the isogeometric analysis framework.

This paper presents a study of laser output characteristics. We fabricated a MOPA (master oscillator power amplifier)-type high-power, narrowbandwidth fiber laser with a bidirectional pumping configuration in its main amplifier. As signal beams, light sources with bandwidths of 3 GHz and 10 GHz-phase-modulated through a PRBS (pseudo-random binary sequence)-were used interchangeably. Furthermore, the characteristics of the SBS (stimulated Brillouin scattering) were analyzed using a signal beam with 3 GHz bandwidth, by adjusting the forward to backward pumppower ratio. Moreover, the characteristics of the transverse mode instability were analyzed by adjusting the forward to backward pump-power ratio, using a signal beam with 10-GHz bandwidth. Finally, the output power from 10 GHz bandwidth was amplified to more than 1 kW using a forward to backward pump-power ratio of 1.6. The beam quality M2 was measured to be approximately 1.36, and the optical-to-optical efficiency was 80% at maximum output power.
The paper presents a simplified force-based seismic design procedure for the preliminary design of steel haunch retrofitting for the seismic upgrade of deficient RC frames. The procedure involved constructing a site-specific seismic design spectrum for the site, which is transformed into seismic base shear coefficient demand, using an applicable response modification factor, that defines base shear force for seismic analysis of the structure. Recent experimental campaign; involving shake table testing of ten (10), and quasi-static cyclic testing of two (02), 1:3 reduced scale RC frame models, carried out for the seismic performance assessment of both deficient and retrofitted structures has provided the basis to calculate retrofit-specific response modification factor Rretrofitted. The haunch retrofitting technique enhanced the structural stiffness, strength, and ductility, hence, increased the structural response modification factor, which is mainly dependent on the applied retrofit scheme. An additional retrofit effectiveness factor (ΩR) is proposed for the deficient structure's response modification factor Rdeficient, representing the retrofit effectiveness (ΩR=Rretrofitted /Rdeficient), to calculate components' moment and shear demands for the retrofitted structure. The experimental campaign revealed that regardless of the deficient structures' characteristics, the ΩR factor remains fairly the unchanged, which is encouraging to generalize the design procedure. Haunch configuration is finalized that avoid brittle hinging of beam-column joints and ensure ductile beam yielding. Example case study for the seismic retrofit designs of RC frames are presented, which were validated through equivalent lateral load analysis using elastic model and response history analysis of finite-element based inelastic model, showing reasonable performance of the proposed design procedure. The proposed design has the advantage to provide a seismic zone-specific design solution, and also, to suggest if any additional measure is required to enhance the strength/deformability of beams and columns.
Background: The hemi-body electron beam irradiation (HBIe-) technique has been proposed for the treatment of mycosis fungoides. It spares healthy skin using an electron shield. However, shielding electrons is complicated owing to electron scattering effects. In this study, we developed a thimble-like head bolus shield that surrounds the patient's entire head to prevent irradiation of the head during HBIe-. Materials and Methods: The feasibility of a thimble-like head bolus shield was evaluated using a simplified Geant4 Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. Subsequently, the head bolus was manufactured using a three-dimensional (3D) printed mold and Ecoflex 00-30 silicone. The fabricated head bolus was experimentally validated by measuring the dose to the Rando phantom using a metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) detector with clinical configuration of HBIe-. Results and Discussion: The thimble-like head bolus reduced the electron fluence by 2% compared with that without a shield in the MC simulations. In addition, an improvement in fluence degradation outside the head shield was observed. In the experimental validation using the inhouse-developed bolus shield, this head bolus reduced the electron dose to approximately 2.5% of the prescribed dose. Conclusion: A thimble-like head bolus shield for the HBIe- technique was developed and validated in this study. This bolus effectively spares healthy skin without underdosage in the region of the target skin in HBIe-.

This paper addresses the finite element modeling of functionally graded porous (FGP) beams for free vibration and buckling behaviour cases. The formulated finite element is based on simple and efficient higher order shear deformation theory. The key feature of this formulation is that it deals with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory with only three unknowns without requiring any shear correction factor. In fact, the presented two-noded beam element has three degrees of freedom per node, and the discrete model guarantees the interelement continuity by using both C0 and C1 continuities for the displacement field and its first derivative shape functions, respectively. The weak form of the governing equations is obtained from the Hamilton principle of FGP beams to generate the elementary stiffness, geometric, and mass matrices. By deploying the isoparametric coordinate system, the derived elementary matrices are computed using the Gauss quadrature rule. To overcome the shear-locking phenomenon, the reduced integration technique is used for the shear strain energy. Furthermore, the effect of porosity distribution patterns on the free vibration and buckling behaviours of porous functionally graded beams in various parameters is investigated. The obtained results extend and improve those predicted previously by alternative existing theories, in which significant parameters such as material distribution, geometrical configuration, boundary conditions, and porosity distributions are considered and discussed in detailed numerical comparisons. Determining the impacts of these parameters on natural frequencies and critical buckling loads play an essential role in the manufacturing process of such materials and their related mechanical modeling in aerospace, nuclear, civil, and other structures.

This paper describes the subarray channel configuration and calibration method for airborne AESA radar antenna. AESA radar demonstrator was designed and implemented for the digital beam-forming performance test of the 12 channel subarray structure. Magnitude and phase difference can be exist between the manufactured subarray channel. In this paper, calibration method for the subarray difference error was suggested. We measured digital monopulse slope in the subarray channel and verified the channel calibration effect. To verify the subarray channel operation, digital monopulse channel was compared with analog monopulse channel performance. AESA radar demonstrator was tested in the ground far field test range. Emulated single target was generated to test the detection and tracking performance of the demonstrator with the same waveform and search pattern. We verified that the detection and tracking performance of the 12 subarray digital monopulse channel was similar with the conventional analog monopulse channel. Also, ABF(Adaptive Beam-Forming) function for the sidelobe jammer was tested and effective operation was verified.

There exist different kinds of aircrafts, such as conventional airplane, rotorcraft, fighter, and unmanned aerial vehicle. Their shape and feature are dependent upon their own assigned mission. One of the fundamental analyses performed during the aircraft design is the structural analysis. It becomes more complicated and requires severe computations because of the recent complex trends in aircraft structure. In order for efficiency in the structural analysis, a simplified approach, such as equivalent beam or plate model, is preferred. However, it is not clear which analysis will be appropriate to analyze the realistic configuration, such as an aircraft wing, i.e., between an equivalent beam and plate analysis. It is necessary to assess the limitation for both the one-dimensional beam analysis and the two-dimensional plate theory. Thus, in this paper, the static structural analysis results obtained by EDISON solvers were compared with the three-dimensional results obtained from MSC NASTRAN. Before that, EDISON program was verified by comparing the results with those from MSC NASTRAN program and other analytic solutions.

This study investigated the behavior of out-of-plane skewed moment connections that were designed as IMFs, as per the Korean standards. A total of 14 finite element models were constructed with the consideration of two types (single- and double-sided connections) and four levels of skew angle (0°, 10°, 20°, and 30°). The results indicated that the skewed connections considered in this study met the acceptance criteria for IMFs given by the codes. However, the load-carrying capacities of skewed connections were decreased as the skew angle increased. For the connection with a skew angle of 30°, the peak load was noted to be 13% less and the energy dissipation capacity could be 26% less than that of non-skewed connection. In addition, because of the skewed nature, the stress distribution in the skewed beam flange near the connection was asymmetric and the stresses were concentrated on the beam inner flange. Column twisting induced by the skewed configuration was very small and negligible in the beam and column combination considered in this study.
A theoretical presentation by using a three-dimensional finite difference beam propagating method (3-D FD-BPM) for the evanescent coupling is offered with respect to the refractive indexes between a side-polished optical fiber and an infinitely planar waveguide with a conductor cladding (PWGCC). The PWG is suspended at a constant distance from an unclad fiber core and attached with a perfect conductor (PEC) on one side. The coupling and propagation of light are found to depend on both the relationship between the refractive index values of two structures and the configuration of the side-polished fiber used in the PWGCC. The spreading of light in the unconfined direction of a PWGCC is presented with the distribution of electric fields in xy - plane and the absolute amplitude of electric fields along the x and y axis. The power of the light propagation in a fiber decreases exponentially along the fiber axis as it is transferred to the PWGCC, where it is carried away.

In this research, a numerical model is developed for analysis of buried pipelines considering longitudinal permanent ground deformation(PGD) due to liquefaction induced lateral spreading. Buried pipelines and surrounding soil are medeled as continuous pipelines using the beam elements and a series of elasto-plastic springs uniformly distributed along the pipelines, respectively. Idealized various PGD patte군 based on the observation of PGD are used as a loading configuration and the length of the lateral spread zone is considered as a loading parameter. Numerical results are verified with other research results and efficient applicability of developed procedure is shown. Analyses are performed by varying different parameters such as PGD pattern, pipe diameter and pipe thickness. Results show that response of buried pipelines are more affected by pipe thickness than pipe diameter. Finally, the critical length of the lateral spread zone and the critical magnitude of PGD which cause yielding, local buckling or tension failure are proposed for the steel pipe which are normally used in Korea.
