Vanadium redox flow battery is believed to be one of important energy storage technologies, because it has many advantages, including long cycle life, high energy efficiency, low cost of maintenance, and environmental friendship. As one of the key components of vanadium redox flow battery system, an ion exchange membrane is required to prevent cross-mixing of the positive and negative electrolytes while allowing ionic continuity. However, ion exchange membrane such as Nafion using in VRBs still face some challenges in meeting performance and cost requirements for broad penetration. Therefore, to resolve these problems, developed various ion exchange membranes are investigated and compared with Nafion membranes in terms of their performance in vanadium redox flow battery.
The cation exchange membrane using the block co-polymer of polysulfone and polyphenylenesulfidesulfone was prepared for a separator of all-vanadium redox flow battery. The membrane property of the prepared cation exchange membrane was measured. The thermal stability of the prepared cation exchange analyzed by TG showed a more stable than that of Nafion117. The lowest measured membrane resistance, equilibrated in 1mol/L $H_2SO_4$ aqueous solution, $0.96{\cdot}cm^2$ at 3 cc of CSA (chlorosulfuricacid) which was introduction agent of ion exchange group. Electrochemical property of all-vanadium redox flow battery using the prepared cation exchange membrane was measured. Electromotive force in 100% of state of charge was 1.4 V which was that of all-vanadium redox flow battery, and cell resistance in charge and discharge at each state of charge had a low value compared with that of all-vanadium redox flow battery using Nafion117.

Recharging battery in electric vehicle takes a quite long time compared with gasoline and diesel vehicle which is a problem, the industries should solve, to introduce the electric vehicle into the market. For this reason, the institutions are suggesting a method replacing the discharged battery to recharged battery which is recharged in the switching center. However, this technology is still required to make clear the controversial issues such as threats to security and identification of users. In this paper, we explore the factors that threats to securities in battery exchange system and define the security requirements of the battery exchange system to solve suggested issues. The results of the research are expected to be the reference in the other studies of electric vehicle field of the commercialization of the battery recharging methods and analysis of the securities.

The cation exchange membrane using TPA (tungstophosphoric acid) and the block co-polymer of polysulfone and polyphenylenesulfidesulfone was prepared for a separator of all-vanadium redox flow battery. The membrane resistance of the prepared cation exchange membrane in 1mol/L $H_2SO_4$ aqueous solution was measured. The membrane resistance of the prepared Psf-PPSS and Psf-TPA-PPSS cation exchange membrane was about $0.94{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$. Electrochemical property of all-vanadium redox flow battery using the prepared cation exchange membrane was measured. The measured charge-discharge cell resistance of V-RFB at 4 A decreased in the order; Nafion117 < Psf-TPA-PPSS < Psf-PPSS. The durability of membrane was earried out by soaking it in $VO_2{^+}$ solution and evaluated by measuring the charge-discharge cell resistance of V-RFB with an increase of soaking time. The prepared Psf-PPSS cation exchange membrane had high durability and Psf-TPA-PPSS cation exchange membrane had almost same durability compared with Nafion117.
In this study, we synthesized vinylbenzyl chloride-co-styrene-co hydroxyethyl acrylate (VBC-co-St-co-HEA) copolymer that can be applied to redox the flow battery process. The anion exchange membrane was prepared by the amination and crosslinking of VBC-co-St-co-HEA copolymer. The chemical structure and thermal properties of VBC-co-St-co-HEA copolymer and aminated VBC-co-St-co-HEA(AVSH) membrane were characterized by FTIR, $^1H$ NMR, TGA, and GPC analysis. The membrane properties such as ion exchange capacity(IEC), electrical resistance, ion conductivity and efficiency of all-vanadium redox flow battery were measured. The IEC value, electrical resistance, and ion conductivity were 1.17 meq/g, $1.9{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$, 0.009 S/cm, respectively. The charge-discharge efficiency, voltage efficiency and energy efficiency from all-vanadium redox flow battery test were 99.5, 72.6 and 72.1%, respectively.
Thin pore-filled cation and anion-exchange membranes (PFCEM and PFAEMs, $t_m=25-30{\mu}m$) were prepared using a porous polymeric substrate for efficient all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRB). The electrochemical and charge-discharge performances of the membranes have been systematically investigated and compared with those of commercially available ion-exchange membranes. The pore-filled membranes were shown to have higher permselectivity as well as lower electrical resistances than those of the commercial membranes. In addition, the VRBs employing the pore-filled membranes exhibited the respectable charge-discharge performances, showing the energy efficiencies (EE) of 82.4% and 84.9% for the PFCEM and PFAEM, respectively (cf. EE = 87.2% for Nafion 1135). The results demonstrated that the pore-filled ion-exchange membranes could be successfully used in VRBs as an efficient separator by replacing expensive Nafion membrane.

Anion exchange membranes for a vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) were prepared by pore-filling on a PE substrate with the copolymerization of vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). The ion exchange capacity, water uptake and weight gain ratio were increased with a similar tendency up to 65% of GMA content, indicating that the monomer improved the pore-filling degree and membrane properties. The vanadium ion permeability and open-circuit voltage were also investigated. The permeability of the VG65 membrane was only $1.23{\times}10^{-7}\;cm^2\;min^{-1}$ compared to $17.9{\times}10^{-7}\;cm^2\;min^{-1}$ for Nafion 117 and $1.8{\times}10^{-7}\;cm^2\;min^{-1}$ for AMV. Consequently, a VRB single cell using the prepared membrane showed higher energy efficiency (over 80%) of up to 100 cycles compared to the commercial membranes, Nafion 117 (ca. 58%) and AMV (ca. 70%).
The IPA-co-HDO-co-(TPA/MA) copolymers for all-vanadium redox flow battery were synthesized by melt condensation polymerization using isophthalic acid(IPA), 1,6-hexandiol (HDO), terephthalic acid(TPA) and maleic anhydride(MA). The amination of chloromethylated IPA-co- HDO-co-(TPA/MA)(CIHTM) copolymer was carried out using trimethylamine, and the anion exchange membrane was also prepared by UV crosslinking reaction. The structure and thermal stability of IHTM copolymers were confirmed by FTIR, $^1H$ NMR, and TGA analysis. The anion membrane properties such as water uptake, ion exchange capacity, electric resistance and electrical conductivity, were measured by gravimetry, titration and LCR meter. The efficiency of the all-vanadium redox flow battery was analyzed. The ion exchange capacity, electric resistance and electrical conductivity were 1.10 meq/g, $1.98{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$, and 0.009 S/cm, respectively. The efficiency of charge-discharge, voltage, and energy for the allvanadium redox flow battery were 96.5, 74.6, 70.0%, respectively.
The electrochemical performance of all vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) using an electrolyte prepared from ammonium metavanadate and a cation exchange membrane (Nafion117) was evaluated. The electrochemical performance of VRFB was measured at a current density of 60 mA/cm2. The average current efficiency of VRFB using the electrolyte prepared from ammonium metavanadate was 94.9%, the average voltage efficiency was 82.2%, and the average energy efficiency was 78.0%. In addition, it was confirmed that the efficiencies of VRFB using the electrolyte prepared from ammonium metavanadate had almost the same value as the efficiencies of VRFB using the electrolyte prepared with vanadyl sulfate (VOSO4).
