  • This study was conducted to evaluate the growth characters and yield components of 18 collected sesame cultivars to get basic information on the variation for the sesame breeding using principal component analysis. All characters except days to flowering, days to maturity and 1,000 seed weight showed significantly different. Seed weight per 10 are showed higher coefficient of variance. Capsule bearing stem length and liter weight showed positive correlation with seed yield per 10 are. The principal components analysis grouped the estimated sesame cultivars into four main components which accounted for 83.7% of the total variation at the eigenvalue and its contribution to total variation obtained from principal component analysis. The first principal component ($Z_1$) was applicable to increase plant height, capsule bearing stem length and 1,000-seed weight. The second principal component ($Z_2$) negatively correlated with days to flowering and maturity by which it was applicable to shorten flowering and maturity date of sesame. At the scatter diagram, Yangbaek, Ansan, M1, M2, M4, M7 and M9 were classified as same group, but M10, Yanghuk, Kanghuk, M5, M6, M12 and M13 were classified as different group. This results would be helpful for sesame breeder to understand genetic relationship of some agronomic characters and select promising cross lines for the development of new sesame variety.

  • Toward the development of practical methods for observed data oriented bispectral estimation, an automatic means for determining the smoothing bandwidth of bispectral windows is proposed, that can also provide an associated optimum bispectral estimate of stationary non-Gaussian signals, systematically only from an observed time series datum of finite length. For the conventional non-parametric bispectral estimation, the MSE (mean squared error) of the normalized estimate is reviewed under a certain mixing condition and sufficient data length, mainly from the viewpoint of the inverse relation between its bias and variance with respect to the smoothing bandwidth. Based on the fundamental relation, a systematic method not only for determining the bandwidth, but also for obtaining the optimum bispectral estimate is presented by newly introducing a MSE evaluation index of the estimate only from an observed time series datum of finite length. The effectiveness and fundamental features of the proposed method are illustrated by the basic results of numerical experiments.

  • In ancient times, architectural design was seen as a critical task in building technologies. Specifically, form, dimension and structural design are of significant. These aspects are associated with each other and to be emerged as a whole. Designing plan dimension was deemed to be the core of design technology due to its close relationship with module system. Thus, its evolution as well as development process typically represents and reflects the spirits and contents of design technologies in ancient China. In China, the materials regarding ancient architectural technology include Yingzaofashi(營造法式) of Song Dynasty and Gongchengzuofazeli(工程做法則例) of Qing Dynasty. They show many aspects concerning materials, structure, scale system and building. In Yingzaofashi, although the length of objects are decided by 'cai(材)' and 'fen(分)', there are no regulations on length, width and height of a building. However, in the construction of ancient buildings, the above mentioned basic scales are very important in both design and construction. The present paper attempts to discuss the significance, namely, the design principles of length, with and height of ancient chinese architecture.

  • The purpose of this study is to classify breast types and to inquire about characteristics depending on breast types of women subjects in their twenties. We researched size items affecting breast volume and regression equations for the prediction of breast volume, and thereby, we will be able to provide some basic data, useful to the development of the brassiere depending on breast types. As a result of categorizing the types of three breast types, "type 1" was characterized by big and greatest protrusion of the breast with large breast volume and a large bust, while "type 2" was characterized by flat breasts with the least breast volume and least bust, and "type 3" was characterized by breast location apart from the center front line. Breast volume is significant in establishment of the brassiere cup depending on breast type. Five items such as, the circumference of the breast, the length of the upper breast, the depth of the breast point, the length of the shoulder point-breast point, and the length of the inferior breast were extracted through regression equations for breast volume.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyse craniofacial shape by 3D scanner for Korean adult head shape by age group. The heads of 836 adults were measured by 3D scanner, and the 25 obtained measurements were analyzed by statifical methods. The results can be summarized as follows. 1. From the basic statistical data analysis, the vertex-tagion and the length between the pupils were the longest in the subjects in their twenties, and decreased in elderly groups. 2. According to the analysis of the craniofacial proportion, the typical adult Korea head type was short-headed. 3. Statistically noticeable differences were found in the ectocanthion- opistcranion by the measurement of the left and the right sides of face in the age groups of the 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s. 4. The order of factor analysis was as follows: the horizontal length, the perpendicular length and the width from the highest in the age group of the 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s.

  • A comparative method is applied to evaluate well-known formulas for estimating the size of supercavities of axisymmetric cavitators for the supercavitating underwater vehicle. Basic functional forms of these formulas are derived first for the cavity diameter from a momentum integral estimate and second for the cavity length from an asymptotic analysis of inviscid supercavity flows. The length and the diameter of axisymmetric supercavities estimated by each formula are compared, with available experimental data for a disk and a 45° conical cavitators, and also with computational results obtained by a CFD code, ‘fluent’, for conical cavitators of wide range of cone angles. Results for estimating the length and the diameter of the supercavities show in general a good agreement, which confirms the size of the supercavities for disk and conical cavitators can be estimated accurately by these simple formulas of an elementary function of cavitation number and drag coefficient of the cavitator. These formulas will be useful for from conceptual design of the cavitator to real-time control of the supercavitating underwater vehicle.

  • Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) are mouth-brooders so that the females holding eggs in their mouth sacrifice their somatic growth for reproduction. For this reason, artificial control of reproduction for the culture of this species has been of interest. Manipulation of photoperiod is an emerging technique for such purpose, but little information is available to establish appropriate photoperiod regime. To obtain necessary basic information, sexually mature females were individually accommodated to glass aquarium, and the spawning activity of these females were monitored for two years under natural photoperiod regime. Female tilapia spawned most frequently on March, April and May when the day length gradually increased from 11 hours to 14 hours and least frequently on September, October, November and December when the day length gradually decreased from 13 hours to less than 10 hours in the first year. The decrease of spawning frequency as day length decreased was also observed in the second year, although the increase of spawning frequency as day length increased was less clear. Spawning of female tilapia was less active when the night was dark due to the disappearance of moonlight (Dark Phase), compared to the Phase of Getting Lighter, Light Phase and Phase of Getting Darker. Results from this study suggest that long day length, particularly increasing phase, is favoured for active spawning of Nile tilapia, and that this species, as a tropical fish species, may utilize changing lunar phases as a secondary environmental cue for reproduction.

  • To evaluate the effects of critical pathway on the length of hospital stay, the cost and quality of care provided to gastrectomy patients in a tertiary care academic medical center. The basic research design is a retrospective case-control comparative study. 470 patients of gastrectomy were included in the study; 180 before pathway development (control), 163 right after pathway implementation (path group I) and 127 one year after pathway implementation (path groupII). 476 patients of modified radical mastectomy were also analyzed to examine whether the reduction of the length of hospital stay is from the hospital-wide trend or due to the critical pathway. Death after operation, ICU stay, unplanned re-operation, readmission after discharge, the length of hospital stay and cost were analyzed. 2-test, one-way ANOVA, Bonferroni and Turkey's test were used for statistical analysis. (1) There were no significant differences in patient clinical conditions and no sign of deterioration of quality from critical pathway. (2) The length of hospital stay was 13.0 days in control group, 12.2 days in path group I and 10.0 days (p<0.01) in path groupII. (3) The total costs during the hospital stay were reduced. However the cost per day was significantly increased from reduction of hospital stay (358,488won in control, 366,017won in path group I and 413,220won (p<0.01) in path groupII). Critical pathway reduced the length of hospital stay, total hospital costs and resource utilization without harming quality of patient care.

  • The present study proposes a simple equation to straightforwardly determine the potential plastic hinge length in boundary element of reinforced concrete shear walls. From the idealized curvature distribution along the shear wall length, a basic formula was derived as a function of yielding moment, maximum moment, and additional moment owing to diagonal tensile crack. Yielding moment and maximum moment capacities of shear wall were calculated on the basis of compatability of strain and equilibrium equation of internal forces. The development of a diagonal tensile crack at web was examined from the shear transfer capacity of concrete specified in ACI 318-11 provision and then the additional moment was calculated using the truss mechanism along the crack proposed by Park and Paulay. The moment capacities were simplified from an extensive parametric study; as a result, the equivalent plastic hinge length of shear walls could be formulated using indices of longitudinal tensile reinforcement at the boundary element, vertical reinforcement at web, and applied axial load. The proposed equation predicted accurately the measured plastic hinge length, providing that the mean and standard deviation of ratios between predictions and experiments are 1.019 and 0.102, respectively.
