  • A 10-month-old intact male Maltese dog (body weight, 1.6 kg) presented with intermittent cough and abnormal heart sounds. The dog was diagnosed with a left-to-right patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) on the basis of the results of transthoracic echocardiography, color flow Doppler examination, and angiography. Transcatheter occlusion of the PDA was performed using the $Amplatz^{(R)}$ Canine Duct Occluder (ACDO) via the femoral artery. The device was placed under fluoroscopic guidance and successfully occluded the PDA. The continuous heart murmur disappeared immediately after the correction and no residual flow was detected. The dog was discharged the following day and regularly examined for complications and safety. This is the first report demonstrating the clinical application of ACDO for the transcatheter closure of PDA via the femoral artery in a small-breed dog in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to find the effects of physical activity program on obese young children's body composition and basic motor skills. The physical activity program was conducted with 16 participants whose Kaup Index were higher than 20 were divided into 2 groups(experimental group and control group) for 12 weeks three times a week. Results of the study are as following. First, the physical activity program was found to improve sub-factors of body composition(weight, body fat mass, % body fat, lean body mass and total body water) in the experimental group compared to the control group. There was statistically significant difference between two groups. Second, the physical activity program was found to improve locomotor and manipulation skills of basic motor skills in the experimental group compared to the control group. There was a statistically significant difference between two groups. Based on these results, the physical activity program have positive effects on the changes in obese young children's body composition and basic motor skills.

  • Many undergraduate engineering freshmen have difficulties in attending major courses due to their poor basic academic ability. Regardless of the university level it is a reality in universities all over the country. In order to solve the problems of poor learning and basic academic ability, in this study, students who want to major in mechanical engineering at A university, it was confirmed the effectiveness and surveyed the satisfaction with the questionnaire. The pre and post test results showed that the A group improved scores by 40.1% and the B group by 18.9%. Questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews conducted after the completion of the program. It showed that the basic learning ability achievement program was highly satisfied with the overall average of 90.6% (4.53/5.0) and an useful program which not only contributed to the interest in the major subjects and the confidence in the academic achievement but also build positive relationships between the student and professor.

  • A fungicidal spray program for effective control of three major apple diseases in Korea (white rot, bitter rot, and Marssonina blotch) was developed. This was based on our previous studies showing that application of ergosterol biosynthesis inhibitors (EBIs) in early or mid-August can eradicate white rot infection in fruit and that some protective fungicides show after-infection activity against white rot. The basic spray program focused on control of white rot, the main target disease, and the fungicides were sprayed at 15-day intervals from petal fall to late August using fungicides that show after-infection and EBI activity. The basic spray program was modified over 4 successive years to improve control efficacy against bitter rot and Marssonina blotch, which sometimes cause as much damage as white rot. Modifications to the regime were made every year by replacing one fungicide in the basic program at a specific spraying time. Substitution of only one fungicide in the spray program, even early in the growing season, greatly influenced the final disease incidence at harvest. Applying this principle, a moderately efficient spray program for cv. Fuji that increased the spray interval from 10 to 15 days and thus reduced the number of sprays required per crop season was developed.

  • It is important that architecture environment is recognized not physical space but an cultural property of the times. Accordingly, the movement to achieve the creative architecture culture that is to establish the cultural identity of the nation, to preserve a physical architecture environment in existence to utilize it has been tried for the promotion of the architecture culture. Especially, it is necessary to be accomplished a basic education to the architecture environment that is related closely with the national life for improving such the consideration. And, It is necessary to develop the educational program, the study method and the related teaching material etc. and to establish systematic implement plan at the same time so that the correct basic architecture education may work out. This study considers the importance and the meaning of the basic architecture education and examines the related overseas cases aiming at developing and activating the systematized education program. On the basis of these, I will make the frame of the basic architecture education that best suits our society is needed and try to find policy measures, then I will establish a firm foothold for pushing ahead the basic architecture education from now on.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of regular physical activity program on young children's basic motor skills and daily stress. The outdoor physical activity program was conducted with 40 participants who were divided into two groups(experimental group and control group) for 10 weeks twice a week. Results of the study were as following. The outdoor physical activity program improved young children's basic motor skills in the experiment group compared to the control group. Also it had positive effects on the reduction of daily stress in the experimental group compared to the control group. This result suggests that the physical activity program have positive effects on the development of young children's basic motor skills and the reduction of daily stress.

  • Nowadays, every kind of system is changed so complex and enormous, it is necessary to assure system reliability, product liability and safety. Fault tree analysis(FTA) is a reliability/safety design analysis technique which starts from consideration of system failure effect, referred to as “top event”, and proceeds by determining how these can be caused by single or combined lower level failures or events. So in fault tree analysis, it is important to find the combination of events which affect system failure. Minimal cut sets(MCS) and minimal path sets(MPS) are used in this process. FTA-I computer program is developed which calculates MCS and MPS in terms of Gw-Basic computer language considering Fussell's algorithm. FTA-II computer program which analyzes importance and function cost of VE consists. of five programs as follows : (l) Structural importance of basic event, (2) Structural probability importance of basic event, (3) Structural criticality importance of basic event, (4) Cost-Failure importance of basic event, (5) VE function cost analysis for importance of basic event. In this study, a method of initiation such as failure, function and cost in FTA is suggested, and especially the priority rank which is calculated by computer-aided decision analysis program developed in this study can be used in decision making determining the most important basic event under various conditions. Also the priority rank can be available for the case which selects system component in FMEA analysis.

  • In D university, 2010 year engineering freshmen were taken basic mathematical ability test and were given basic mathematical ability improvement program based on the test. In order to study the effect of this program for scholastic achievement, we analyse basic mathematical ability test score and college mathematics score among student groups. And to study the effect of this program for scholastic motivation, we survey the mathematical inclination, the recognition of mathematics, and classes of mathematics. As results, engineering freshmen in D university were poor at basic mathematical ability and basic mathematical ability improvement program effected scholastic achievement and motivation in mathematics, greatly. For the success of college mathematics in engineering college, this study suggests basic mathematical ability test and the survey for engineering freshmen's mathematical background. Finally, we suggest that college mathematics must be focused on the improvement of basic mathematical abilities.

  • The objective of this research is to evaluate the Creative Research Initiative Program (CRI), a national R&D program funded by the Ministry of Science & Technology in Korea. The evaluation of CRI covers the following research questions; 1) Have it set a unique position and characteristic distinguished from other government-funded R&D programs\ulcorner 2) Are the achievements of the program relevant to its goal\ulcorner 3) What is its performances and how much is it achieved its goal\ulcorner The results are the followings; 1) CRI is perceived as a pure basic research, distinguished from other national basic research programs, such as the Coal Oriented Basic Research Program and the SRC and ERC. 2) CRI is a well-adapted R&D program in confront of the environmental changes and R&D needs, as well as follows the planned R&D areas. 3) CRI have performed well in the raising-up world-class research leaders and the nation-wide diffusion of creative R&D culture, while it got few performances in the overcoming the limitation of the existing technologies and the independent development of original key technologies for future industries. However, the duration of the program, 5 year, is too short to expect concrete outcome, such as creating original technologies. Many of the outcomes of CRI gets a lot of attention from top class scientists in the world, it is expected to generate various R&D performances in the future.
