  • We have investigated the digital bit synchronization problem in baseband communication receiver systems using the Gauss-Markov estimation technique which is equivalent to the weighted least square method. The realized bit synchronizer, including the data detector, processes the input signal two dimensionally into the transition phase and data level under the white Gaussian noise environment. We have confirmed the relization of the bit synchronizer via computer simulation. In addition, we have compared and evaluated the estimation error performance of the proposed method with that of the conventional DTTL method and of the minimum likelihood method.

  • The Third Generation (3G) cellular mobile communication systems aim at providing higher data rates, improved quality of service, support for multimedia applications and global roaming. Cdma2000 and Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) have emerged as two leading 3G standards in USA and European countries, respectively. Both the standards are capable of delivering high bandwidth data, voice and multimedia services to users of mobile equipment, but are not directly interoperableand are not available across different geographic areas, due to which global roaming is not possible in true sense of using single mobile equipment. However, both UMTS and cdma2000 are based on wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) as the access method. Due to this, there exist some inherent commonalities between them. In this paper we will try to exploit the commonalities between the two standards in order to design an ASIC, which can provide dual standard capability. This paper discusses the physical layer aspects of the two standards and proposes an approach to design an ASIC which can be mapped to baseband processing part of the physical layer and is capable of delivering for either of the two aforementioned standards.

  • A 41dB gain control range $6^{th}$-order band-pass receiver front-end (RFE) using CMOS switched frequency translated impedance (FTI) is presented in a 40 nm CMOS technology. The RFE consists of a frequency tunable RF band-pass filter (BPF), IQ gm cells, and IQ TIAs. The RF BPF has wide gain control range preserving constant filter Q and pass band flatness due to proposed pre-distortion scheme. Also, the RF filter using CMOS switches in FTI blocks shows low clock leakage to signal nodes, and results in low common mode noise and stable operation. The baseband IQ signals are generated by combining baseband Gm cells which receives 8-phase signal outputs down-converted at last stage of FTIs in the RF BPF. The measured results of the RFE show 36.4 dB gain and 6.3 dB NF at maximum gain mode. The pass-band IIP3 and out-band IIP3@20 MHz offset are -10 dBm and +12.6 dBm at maximum gain mode, and +14 dBm and +20.5 dBm at minimum gain mode, respectively. With a 1.2 V power supply, the current consumption of the overall RFE is 40 mA at 500 MHz carrier frequency.

  • In this paper, the performance of the noncoherent code tracking loop designed at baseband for CDMA applications is analyzed in detail and is confirmed by computer simulations. Analytical closed-form formula for jitter variance is derived for AWGN channel environments as a function of pulse shaping filter, timing offset, signal-to-interference ratio, and loop filter coefficients. The design issue of the loop filter is also addressed with emphasis on the second-order tracking loop. Finally, the performance of the designed tracking loop is examined by computer simulations for both AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels, when applied to the reverse link of the coherent CDMA system for IMT-2000 designed by ETRI.

  • High-speed telecommunication systems are influenced by electromagnetic environments because they need a wide bandwidth to transmit signals. Immunity tests of telecommunication equipment are effective for improving its immunity to electromagnetic environments. However, immunity tests are expensive to carry out because there are several different tests. The correlation among the tests should therefore be examined in order to reduce the kinds of tests that are necessary. This paper investigates the correlation between the electrical fast transient/burst (EFTB) test and the radio frequency (RF) conductive immunity test. Imitation equipment was constructed with a balun, and a baseband signal was transmitted from the associated equipment to the imitation equipment. Then, disturbances were applied to the equipment, and the telecommunication quality was evaluated by using the bit error rate (BER). The results from the EFTB test indicated that the BER was less than $6{\times}10^{-5}$ and the value was independent of the peak value. The results from the RF conductive immunity test indicated that the BER was affected by the longitudinal conversion loss (LCL).

  • A bandpass sampling technique, which is a method directly downconverting a bandpass signal to a baseband or a low IF signal without analog mixers, can be an alterative choice for the SDR system to minimize the RF front-end. In this paper, a complex bandpass sampling technique for two bandpass-filtered signals is proposed. We derived generalized formulae for the available sampling range, the signal's IF and the minimum sampling frequency taking into consideration the guard-bands for the multiple RE signals. Thru the simulation experiments, the advantages of the . complex bandpass sampling over the pre-reported real bandpass sampling are investigated for applications in the SDR design.

  • This paper presents the unified user equipment (UE) baseband modulation and demodulation (modem) hardware platform architecture to support multiple radio access technologies. In particular, this platform selectively supports two systems; one is HEDGE system, which is the combination of third generation partnership project (3GPP) Release 7 high speed packet access evolution (HSPA+) and global system for mobile communication (GSM)/general packet radio service (GPRS)/enhanced data rates for GSM evolution (EDGE), while the other is LEDGE system, which is the combination of 3GPP Release 8 long term evolution (LTE) and GSM/GPRS/EDGE. This is done by applying the flexible pin multiplexing scheme to a hardwired pin mapping process. On the other hand, to provide stable connection, high portability, and high debugging ability, the stacking structure is employed. Here, a layered board architecture grouped by functional classifications is applied instead of the conventional one flatten board. Based on this proposed configuration, we provide a framework for the verification step in wireless cellular communications. Also, modem function/scenario test and inter-operability test with various base station equipments are verified by system requirements and scenarios.

  • Direct-conversion receivers often suffer from a DC-offset that is a by-product of the direct conversion process to baseband. In general, a basic approach to reduce the DC-offset is to do simple average of the baseband signal and remove the DC by subtracting the average. However, this gives rise to a residual DC offset which degrades the performance when the receiver adopts the coding schemes with high coding rates such as 8-PSK. Therefore, more advanced methods should be additionally required for better performance. While the training sequences are basically designed to have good auto-correlation properties to facilitate the channel estimation, they may be not good for the simultaneous estimation of the channel response and the DC-offset. Also the DC offset compensation under a bad condition does not give good results due to the estimation error. Correspondingly, the proposed scheme employs the two important points. First, the training sequence codes are divided into two groups by MSE(Mean Squared Errors) for estimating the channel taps and then SNR calculated from each group is compared to predefined threshold to do fine DC-offset estimation. Next, ON/OFF module is applied for preventing performance degradation by large estimation error under severe channel conditions. The simulation results of the proposed scheme shows good performances compared to the existing algorithm. As a result, this scheme is surely applicable to the receiver design in many communications systems.
