Chemically modified graphene has been great interest for the application of printed electronics using solution prossesable technique. Here, we demonstrate a large area graphene exfoliation method with fewer defects on the basal plane by application of shear stress in solution to obtain high quality reduced graphene oxide (RGO). Moreover, we introduce a novel route to preparing highly concentrated and conductive RGO in various solvents by monovalent cation-${\pi}$ interaction. Noncovalent binding forces can be induced between a monopole (cation) and a quadrupole (aromatic ${\pi}$ system). The stability of this RGO dispersion was more sensitive to the strength of the cation-${\pi}$ interactions than to the cation-oxygen functional group interactions. The RGO film prepared without a post-annealing process displayed superior electrical conductivity of 97,500 S/m. Our strategy can facilitate the development of large scalable production methods for preparing printed electronics made from high-quality RGO nanosheets.
In the process of revising the tachinid genus Linnaemya Robineau-Desvoidy in Korea, we have discovered two species for the first time in Korea. They closely resemble each other and need to be identified with caution. We here provide detailed redescriptions and illustrations with their diagnostic characters indicated. Linnaemya atriventris can be distinguished from L. hirtipennis by the combination of the following characteristics: 1) abdomen black in ground color; 2) wing vein R1 without setulose; 3) hypandrium without secondary posterior lobe; 4) male with antero-basal 1/3 of flagellomere 1 distinctly swollen; and 5) postgonite very weakly curved dorsally.
${\beta}$-SiC formation mechanism in Si melt-C-SiC system with varying in size of carbon source was investigated. A continuous reaction sintering process using Si melt infiltration method was adopted to control the reaction sintering time effectively. It was found that ${\beta}$-SiC formation mechanism in Si melt-C-SiC system was directly affected by the size of carbon source. In the Si melt-C-SiC system with large carbon source ${\beta}$-SiC formation mechanism could be divided into two stages depending on the reaction sintering time: in early stage of reaction sintering carbon dissolution in Si melt and precipitation of ${\beta}$-SiC was occurred preferentially and then SIC nucleation and growth was controlled by diffusion of carbon throughy the ${\beta}$-SiC layer formed on graphite particle. Furthmore a dissolution rate of graphite particles in Si melt could be accelerated by the infiltration of Si melt through basal plane of graphite crystalline.
Avian and mammalian skeletal muscles exhibit a remarkable ability to adjust to physiological stressors induced by growth, exercise, injury and disease. The process of muscle recovery following injury and myonuclear accretion during growth is attributed to a small population of satellite cells located beneath the basal lamina of the myofiber. Several metabolic factors contribute to the activation of satellite cells in response to stress mediated by illness, injury or aging. This review will describe the regenerative properties of satellite cells, the processes of satellite cell activation and highlight the potential role of satellite cells in skeletal muscle growth, tissue engineering and meat production.
The relationship between elongation of hypocotyl and its vascular transition was studied with seedling of Glycine max. the hypocotyl elongation proceeded acropetally from the base of hypocotyl toward the cotyledonary node. The vascular transition did not occur in the basal region of the hypocotyl, which did not nearly elongate, with exarch radial vascular bundles. However, the vascular transition was almost completed at the middle part of the hypocoty, more or less elongated, with endarch collateral vascular bundles. Such bundles also appeared in the uppermost region of the hypocotyl, in which the elongation was the most striking. These results suggested that the vascular transition was related to the hypocotyl elongation and that the transition of primary vascular system in Glycine max seedling was established by rather rapid process. Our observations of the serial sections from root to hypocotyl revealed that the vascular system through the root-hypocotyl-cotyledon was a unit, to which one of the epicotyl that did not participate in transition was superimposed.
Polyamine titers and the activities of arginine decarboxylase(ADC) and ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), enzymes which catalyze rate-limiting steps in polyamine biosynthesis, were investigated during polar regeneration of Populus leaf segments. The polar regeneration occurred at the basal cut end of Populus leaf segments through cell division around the vascular bundle. In the process of polar regeneration, the titers of putrescine and spermidine increased rapidly but the content of spermine remained constant. The leaf segments were then divided into three separte part ; the proximal, middle and distal. Spermidine titers showed an increase mainly in the proximal parts where polar regeneration occurred. On the other hand, putrescine titers showed an increase in the other two parts. In the course of polar regeneration, the activities of ADC and ODC increased, the ADC activities being higher than those of ODC. However, ODC activity was higher in the proximal part. Therefore, the spermidine contents and ODC activities are suggested to be related to polar regeneration in Populus leaf segments.
Dementia is the neurodegenerative process that affects cognition, behavior and function and one of the most prominent diseases of dementia is Alzheimer's disease(AD). AD is a dementing illness characterized clinically by the progressive and irreversible deafferentation of the limbic system, association neocortex and basal forebrain. A number of conditions are known to be predisposing risk factors for AD. In several of these, initiation of glial-mediated inflammatory pathways as a mechanism of AD is getting a lot of attention. On the other hand, a biochemical marker for monitoring the onset and progression of the disease would be a valuable tool for disease management. Also such a marker might be used as an end point in clinical intervention protocols. This biochemical marker will have the potential for identifying subjects afflicted with the disease and possibly for monitoring the onset and longitudinal progression of the disease. Here we have reviewed the latest papers of different approaches to AD. Of course, there is a section of PET which is very useful clinically nowadays.
The three-dimensional structure of the Sertoli cell in the rat was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Morphologically, seven types of Sertoli cell processes were evident : Shrot, flat and ramified processes are projected from the lateral side of the basal portion of Sertoli cell. Leaf-like processes are attached to the surface of spermatocytes and spermatids. Slender cord-like processes, flat and irregular shaped processes, sucker-like processes and club-like processes are observated in the middle and apical portion of seminiferous epithelium. The sheet-like processes rest upon more than one-thirds of the surface of each spermatogonium, spermatocyes and spermatids located in the proximity of the Sertoli cell. All Sertoli processes are originated from Sertoli cell column. Just before spermiation, the processes which are attached to the head of maturation spermatid are eliminated. Though the mechanism for elimination of residual body is not known, these observations segget that the Sertoli cell process are thought to have a reciprocity with the germ cells.
The graphite intercalation compounds(GIC) were prepared by a dry process that led to the intercalation from the direct reaction of gaseous $SO_3$ with flake type graphite. The basal spacing of the GIC was increased from 8.3 ${\AA}$ to 12 in the gallery height. The ejection of interlayer $SO_3$ molecules by the heating for 1 minute at $950^{\circ}C$ resulted in an exfoliated graphite (EG) with surprisingly high expansion in the direction of c-axis. The expansion ratios of the exfoliated graphites were increased greatly between 220 times and 400 times compared to the original graphite particles, and the bulk density was range of 0.0053 to 0.01 $g/cm^3$, depending on reaction time. The pore size distribution of exfoliated graphite was in the range of $10-170{\mu}m$, which exhibites both mesoporosity and macroporosities. This result indicates that the direct reaction of graphite paricles with gaseous $SO_3$ can be proposed as an another route for the exfoliated graphite having excellent physical properties.
In our previous study, we have shown that Fgf-8 is expressed in the basal layer of the apical epithelial cap (AEC) and in the underlying thin layer of mesenchymal tissue of the regenerating limbs of Mexican axolotl, Amby-stoma mexicanum. Our present RT-PCR data also demonstrate that Fgf-8 transcript is localized both in the mesenchymal and epidermal tissues. To understand the effect of retinoic acid (RA) on the expression of Fgf-8 in the regenerating axolotl limbs, RA was injected intraperitoneally at the dediffer-entiation stage of limb regeneration. The RA treatment caused 8 change in the Fgf-8 expression profile of the regenerating limbs. In RA-treated limbs, duration of Fgf-8 expression was prolonged and a high level of expression was maintained during dedifferentiation and blastema formation stages. These results suggest that Fgf-8 is an important molecule in the process of pattern duplication of regenerating salamander limbs evoked by RA treatment.
