  • A novel dimming algorithm for the electronic ballast of the electrodeless lamp is proposed. The proposed algorithm is based on the burst dimming method and controls the duty ratio for the two switches of the electronic ballast by pulse width modulated signal. The preposed algorithm was implemented by a fully digital circuit using EPLD device. To verify the validity of the proposed algorithm, the implemented control circuit was applied to the electronic ballast for a 100W electrodeless fluorescent lamp. As a result, the wide illumination dimming range from 5% to 100% was obtained.

  • This paper presents a new approach in the design of multiple power output electronic ballasts for compact fluorescent lamps which power output range of 11W, 15W, 20W by using equivalent resistance and RLC equivalent circuit concept and frequency control. A multiple power output electronic ballast which adopts half-bridge inverter topology is set up to compare the results of PSpice simulation with experimental ones. Starting characteristics of lamp voltage, lamp current and light output are better than the existing electronic ballasts, and therefore is verified the validity of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents the use of a novel, single-stage high-power-factor electronic ballast with a symmetrical class-DE low-$d{\upsilon}$/$dt$ resonant rectifier as a power-factor corrector for fluorescent lamps. The power-factor correction is achieved by using a bridge rectifier to utilize the function of a symmetrical class-DE resonant rectifier. By employing this topology, the peak and ripple values of the input current are reduced, allowing for a reduced filter inductor volume of the EMI filter. Since the conduction angle of the bridge rectifier diode current was increased, a low-line current harmonic and a power factor near unity can be obtained. A prototype ballast, operating at an 84-kHz fixed frequency and a 220-$V_{rms}$, 50-Hz line input voltage, was utilized to drive a T8-36W fluorescent lamp. Experimental results are presented which verify the theoretical analysis.

  • As products using LEDs are developed actively, also there has been large request for LED products that can replace traditional lamps like fluorescent lamps and metal halide lamps. But so far there is no proper standard that manufacturer can use and test it. As a result manufacturer can't develop retrofit LED lamps and sell it even they have technology. In this study, by analyzing control gear for fluorescent lamp that is currently used in market which is magnetic or electronic ballast, I'd like to develop proper test method by investigating compatibility between all-type control gear and LED retrofit products.

  • This paper describes the temperature characteristics and influence produced from the unification of Magnetic Ballast and simple Electronic starter for fluorescent lamp. This is affected by the transmitted Temperature from a part of Ballast loss in half-wave rectifier electronic starter. The simulation and experiment show that characteristics of capacitor in electronic starter is changed by the high temperature(80$^{\circ}C$) of magnetic ballast, and preheating time of lamp is reduced by it.

  • This paper proposes a new approach for the design of a multi-output electronic ballast for fluorescent lamps of different outputs and control method. At first, a standard-output electronic ballast is constructed and then fluorescent lamps with different outputs are lighted by the frequency control of inverter circuit using MeV. This multi-output electronic ballast consists of a rectifier circuit, an inverter circuit, and a frequency control circuit to determine the optimal frequency for the lamps of different output. In order to verify the proposed design method, a prototype of a multi-output electronic ballast for 11 [WJ. 15[WJ compact fluorescent lamps and 20W fluorescent lamp is constructed. Results of observing the voltage and current characteristics of lamps are in accord with those of PSpice simulation. Also its efficacy is nearly the same as the other electronic ballasts. From the result, therefore, validity of the proposed design method of a multi-output electronic ballast for fluorescent lamps is verified.

  • This paper describes the high efficiency inverter ballast circuit using very cheap microprocessor, which has been developed by the author. A variety of soft-switching techniques have been proposed to reduce the switching losses and EMI publems that accur with higher switching frequencies in switched inverter ballast 1be inverter ballast circuit, which employs a temperature sensing circuits has been also proposed to improve starting performance of the fluorescent lamps. That is, the inverter ballast circuit, which employs a soft-starting circuits and soft-switching techniques to implement the power factoc correcticn and to mitigate of power-loss and iocrease a life time of the fluorescent lamps, has become an attractive performance forballasting the fluorescent lamps. In this paper, the operation and the control of the inverter ballast are described in detail and experimental results are presented. As the experimental results, when enviroment temperatture is at TEX>$-40^{\circ}C$, the inverter ballast circuit has low THD(4.8%) of the input current and large power factor(98%) of the lamp current. The proposed improved ballast circuit awears to be a good performance for ballasting fluorescent lamps. lamps.

  • In this paper, prototype of high-power-factor single-stage electronic ballast for fluorescent lamp is designed and implemented. A new low cost single stage high power factor electronic ballast for fluorescent lamps is based on integration of two-boost converter and LC type high frequency resonant inverter. The proposed ballast is combined by simple construction, because full bridge rectifier diode is eliminated and simple control circuit is applied. Boost converter operate in the voltage of positive and negative half cycle respectively at line frequency (60㎐), operation in discontinuous conduction mode performs high power factor. The experimental results show the good performance as PF 0.99, THD 15.4%, and CF 1.65 at output 63.5〔W〕.
