The ball screw is one of the important mechanical parts for the linear motion feeding systems. The usage of the ball screw has been growing in various industrial fields such as CNC machine tool, industrial robot and automated systems. Because of ever increasing demand for ball screws, increased accuracy and quality of the ball screw is needed, especially the surface roughness of the ball contact area in order to diminish noise and vibration. Therefore to improve the surface roughness of the area,we introduced magnetic assisted polishing which is one of the new potential polishing methods. In this study, diamond slurry and iron powder was used for magnetic assisted polishing of the ball bearing surface. This polishing process was experimentally confirmed to improve the surface roughness of the ball bearing.

Ball screw systems have been used for positioning elements of machine tools and precision tables. In order to maintain the high rigidity and accuracy, a certain amount of preload is applied between the nut and the screw of ball screw systems. However, large amount of the preload oncreases the frictional heat. The temperature rises remarkably at the high speed motion, and the thermal expansion degrades the positioning accuracy. In this paper, a finite difference method is applied to analyse temperature distributions and thermal expansions of the ball screw system according to preload conditions and rotational speeds. Some simulation results show that the developed methodology is appropriate to study the thermal expansion characteristics of ball screw systems.

Recently, ball screws have been used in machine tools, robot parts, and medical instruments. The demand for ball screws of high precision and reduced size is increasing because of the growth of high value-added industries. Three types of ball screws are typically used: deflector type, end-cap type, and tube type. They are also classified from C0 to C9 according to the precision level. A deflector type ball screw can reduce the variation of rotational torque and the size of the nut of the ball screw is minimized. To ensure the reliable design of ball screws, it is important to perform a structural analysis. The purpose of this study is to perform a stability evaluation through analysis of a deflector type miniature ball screw for weapon systems. The analysis is performed through Finite Elements Method (FEM) simulation to predict characteristics such as deformation, stress, and thermal effects. The interference between the shaft and the deflector for smooth rotation are also studied. Based on the results of the analysis, the development of the deflector type miniature ball screw for weapon systems is performed.

In order to achieve high precision machine tools, Performance enhancement of feed drive systems is required. One of the important technical issues is how to decrease thermal expansion of ball screw in proportion to the increase of machining speed. When measuring force of stretch of ball screw, since not only actual expansion and the value of bending have to be considered, it is impossible to define the exact value of expansion. In addition, support bearings of ball screw gain considerable force in axial direction. It also generates thermal expansion on the ball screw, and deteriorates the performances of the hearings. In conclusion, it is impossible to give the pretension enough to absorb all the elongation due to thermal expansion generated during machine is running. If given bed column and saddle are all bent to chance machine accuracy, and the support bearings of ball screw is damaged.

Ball screw drives are widely used in industry, and many studies have been devoted on precise, fast and robust control of ball screw drives. In this study, a novel position control algorithm for ball screw drives is proposed, which consist of a PD controller, a friction feedforward and a disturbance observer. The dynamics and the position error of such controller are analyzed to establish an error model, which can be used to predict the resulting position error of the given desired trajectory. Using the proposed error model, the desired trajectory can be modified so that the predicted position error can be compensated in a feedforward manner. The proposed algorithm does not require the model of the system for the error prediction, and thus can be easily applied to conventional control systems. The performance of the system is verified through simulations and experiments.

Ball screw feed drive systems have been broadly used in machine tools or precision automatic feed systems. Recently, modern machine tools require high speed and high precision and drive system to achieve high productivity. Unfortunately, a feed drive system, even though it was optimum designed, may experience severe transient vibrations during high-speed operation if its feed rate control is unsuitable. A rough feed rate curve having discontinuity in its acceleration profile causes a serious vibration problem in the feed slide system. This paper presents a feed rate optimization of a machine tool feed slide system, which is driven by a ball screw, for its minimum vibrations. Firstly, a 6-degree-of-freedom lumped parameter model was proposed for the vibration analysis of a ball screw driven machine tool feed drive system. Next, a feed rate optimization of the feed slide was carried out for minimum vibrations. The feed rate curve optimization strategy is to find out the most appropriate acceleration profile having finite jerk. Of course, the optimized feed rate should approximate to the desired one as possible. A genetic algorithm with variable penalty function was used in this feed rate optimization.

Ball screw systems are largely used in industry for motion control and motor applications. But the problem of noise, which really perplexes us, is highly correlated with the quality in ball screw systems all the way. In this paper, machining process parameters were evaluated in respects of technique, business, produce and quality to verify which impact influences the noise most. In order to adjust and compare, two comparison groups were set with the present parameters bench mark. Different ball screws were produced as specimens for the noise tests. Through comparing the noise performance of different parameters in the machining process respectively, a group of optimized machining process parameters were obtained. Another noise test was proceeded to know how noise performance was improved by optimizing the machining process parameters. At last, surface roughness tests have been done to know how surface roughness improved by optimization. The improvement of surface roughness is the main factor influences the noise performances.

Ball screws are commonly used in linear motion feeding systems of various machine tools and automated systems. They are known to have relatively little backlash, high precision and efficiency compared to ordinary lead screws. Furthermore, the effectiveness of ball screw has made it the preferred choice of many newly developed high speed precision feeding units. The motivation of this work is to establish the groove edsigh basis of ball screws for the reduction of contact fatigue failure. In most instances, fatigue failure between ball and shaft groove is due to excessive contact pressure. Especially, the excessive load is causative of plastic flow below the contact surface, which can contribute to surface failure. But, in spite of small load, if groove conformity rate is large, contact pressure is increased and internal shear stress reach the yield value of the material. In such a point, the authors deal with design procedure for deciding the permissible conformity rate of a ball screw groove with the computational evaluation of contact pressure and maximum shear stress.

High precision machining technology has become one of the important parts in the development of a precision machine. Such a machine requires high precision positioning as well as high speed on a large workspace. For machining systems having a high precision positioning with a long stroke, it is necessary to examine the repeatability of reference position decision. Though ball-screw driven linear stages equipped linear scale have high precision feed drivers and a long stroke, they have some limitations for reference position decision if they have not equipped the accurate home sensor. This study is performed to experimentally examine the repeatability for home position decision of a magnetic sensor as a home switch of ball-screw driven linear stage by using capacitance probe.
