Transient simulation and experiment validation on the opening and closing process of a ball valve

  • The ball valve is an important device in the pipeline transportation system of nuclear power plants. Its operational stability and safety directly affect the normal working of nuclear power plants. In this study, the transient numerical simulation of the opening and closing process of a ball valve was conducted on the basis of the flow interruption capability experiment of the ball valve by using the moving mesh method and inlet and outlet variable boundary conditions. The flow rate and pressure difference with time of the opening and closing process of the ball valve were studied. The internal flow characteristics of the ball valve under different relative openings were analyzed in conjunction with the typical back-step flow structure. Results show that the transient numerical results agree well with the experimental results. The internal flow characteristics of the ball valve are similar at the same opening during opening and closing process. At small opening, the spool and outlet channels easily form a back-step flow structure. The disappearance and generation of backflow vortices during opening and closing occur at 85% opening and 75% opening, respectively. With the decrease in opening degree, the difference in vortex core area in the flow channel of the ball valve spool in the opening and closing process gradually appears. The research results provide some reference value for the design and optimization of ball valves.

계장용 볼 밸브 유량계수 Cv 측정에 관한 연구 (A Study of the Measurement of the Flow Coefficient Cv of a Ball Valve for Instrumentation)

  • The results of the measurement of the flow-rate coefficient (Cv-value) and the analysis of a small ball valve are summarized follows. The Cv-values of 1/2-, 3/4- and 1-inch ball valves were measured using a flow-rate measurement test. The manufacturer obtained the Cv-value using a theoretical calculation method. The new experimental measurement and analysis method yielded more reliable results. In addition, the Cv value obtained through numerical analysis was almost identical the value provided by the manufacturer, which was based on experimental results. A Study on Flow Analysis results are all similar appearances as the reliability of the results.

SWRO 전처리 공정에 적용된 DABF 내 Ball Media Filter 성능 평가 (Performance Evaluation of Ball Media Filter in DABF applied to SWRO pretreatment process)

  • DABF(Dissolve Air Flotation with Ball Filter) is developed as the DAF with the addition of a fiber ball at the lower part of the DAF. The DABF with a capacity of 4,500 ㎥/h was constructed at Gijang SWRO plant in Busan. Since the ball filter has high filtration rate, the loading rate of DABF was designed from 20 to 42 ㎥/h/㎡. When one DABF basin is in the back washing mode, the loading rate of other two DABF basins is increased to 42 ㎥/h/㎡. Turbidity at the BF outlet in DABF is <2 NTU at turbidity of 5-10 NTU at the BF inlet. If there is no algae bloom and turbidity is low in raw seawater, only BF in DABF is operated and meets <2 NTU at the BF outlet. Even if BF is operated at high hydraulic loading rates, no significant differential pressure increases and reduction in the turbidity removal rate is minimal in a day. Thus, DABF is the pre-treatment technology that provides stable water quality even with BF onlyoperation without DAF operation. Compared with the DAF, DABF requires additional facilities such as valves, piping, and drainage systems for backwashing the BF. But in terms of footprint and operating costs, DABF has more advantages than DAF. With DABF application, the load of the downstream filtration equipment is decreased so that the capacity of the filtration equipment can be reduced. Also, if the downstream filtration equipment is to be maintained the same regardless of DABF, the operating cost of DABF is less than DAF.

  • A PFA lined ball valve, which is machined with fluorinated resin PFA to its inner part for improving corrosion resistance, non-stickness, heat-resistance, has been widely used in semiconductor/LCD manufacturing processes with the high purity chemicals as working fluid. Due to the safety concerns, the experiments for measuring the flow coefficient of a PFA lined ball valve should be conducted with water at room temperature according to IEC standards. However, it is required to know the real flow coefficient with the real working fluid, because the flow coefficient is critical to correctly design valves in piping system. In this study, we calculated the flow coefficient of a PFA lined ball valve 40A with hydrochloric acid ($40^{\circ}C$ 36% HCl) as the working fluid using a commercial CFD package, ANSYS CFX v15. The computational results had a good agreement with the measured data and showed a little difference between water and hydrochloric acid as the working fluid of a PFA lined ball valve.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of the radial piston type oil pump with new mechanism for a metal diaphragm hydrogen compressor. Generally, metal diaphragm type hydrogen compressor systems are operated by oil hydraulic power. In this system an oil compensating pump has been demanded to compensate for a leakage oil head chamber. The metal diaphragm type hydrogen compressor consists of an oil compensating pump, commonly used hydraulic piston pump and driven by main crank shaft. The radial piston type oil compensating pump with new rolling contacted piston mechanism is developed and experimented. The developed piston element of the radial piston pump consists of piston, steel ball, return spring, two check valves, eccentric cam and ball racer. In this study, designed 4 type pistons as and orifice hole. Operating characteristics and pressure ripple characteristics are tested under no load to 60bar loaded with every 20bar increasing step and pressure ripple and flow rate are experimentally investigated.

  • Because of industrial development, industrial facilities are becoming more complex and diversified. Plant industries are focused on productivity improvement, cost reduction, and product uniformity by simplifying production processes using automated control. Furthermore, plant industries require higher pressures and temperatures to improve energy efficiency. For this reason, the valves used in plants are operated under harsh conditions. Globe valves and gate valves are mainly used for high pressure these days. However, these valves have various problems, including low maintainability and high cost, due to structural problems. Therefore, butterfly and ball valve applications are increasing in industrial plants. This paper suggests a quadruple-offset butterfly valve that is applicable to bi-direction use, and the principle design parameters are suggested. The selected design parameters are an eccentric flange center line and shaft centerline(Offset 1), an eccentric seat centerline and disc shaft centerline(Offset 2), the angle between the flange centerline and seat wedge angle(Offset 3), the angle between the vertical direction of the disc shaft centerline and seat centerline(Offset 4), and the seat engagement angle. To analyze the interaction effect of the design parameters, ANOM and ANOVA were performed with an orthogonal array. The parameters were found to have effects in the following order: Offset 2, Offset 1, engagement angle, Offset 3, and Offset 4. The interaction between the parameters was insignificant.

붐방제기의 곡선행로 조향반경에 따른 붐의 구간별 유량제어 (Sectional Flow-rate Control of Boom Sprayer According to the Steering Radius along Winding Rows)

  • Most upland in Korea have irregular field shapes. Boom sprayers working alone winding row will show considerable differences of spraying amount per unit area between left and right booms. If flow rates of both booms are equal. This phenomenon becomes significant as steering radius of sprayer decreases. This study was performed to seek a method which reduce the difference of the spray amount between left, right and center booms while spraying along curvy rows. A flow rate control method for keeping application rate of each boom section constant was proposed and experimentally proved using a boom sprayer attached to a cultivating tractor. The flow rate control device was composed of 3 ball valves and a rotary angle sensor. The rotary angle sensor showed a symmetric voltage output with respect to steering radius. The spray overlapping was happened in a boom nearby the steering center when steering radius of the sprayer was less than 5.2 m. Flow rates for left, right and center booms were regulated using ball valves based on the steering radius and spraying areas ration of right/left boom. The Maximum spraying area ratio ($S_{LR}$) of left to right boom section was 1:3.6 at the steering radius of 5.2 m. However, The Maximum achieved right and left spraying flow ratio was 1:2.7.

건축배관시스템 내에서의 수격현상에 관한 실험적 연구 (A Study on Water Hammer Phenomena in Piping Systems of Buildings)

  • An experimental study was conducted on water hammer phenomena generated by quick valve operations in piping systems of buildings. Transient water hammer pressure waves were measured for three different types of valves, i. e. a ball valve, a solenoid valve, and on one-touch valve. The effects of flow rate and valve closing time on the maximum water hammer pressure were investigated. Based on the experimental results, general design recommendations were provided to prevent water hammer phenomena in piping systems of high-rise apartment buildings.

  • Among the engine components of an internal combustion engine, the valve train is a series of systems that supply intake gas to the combustion chamber and operate intake and exhaust valves that discharge exhaust gas. If excessive wear occurs in the valve train system, the suction and exhaust valves do not open and close on time, which leads to abnormal combustion and exhaust gas. In this study, we conduct experiments and analyses on friction and wear characteristics of the valve train system. Moreover, we experimentally study the correlation between the pinball and pinball cap on engine oil lubrication, friction experiment, wear amount analysis, and surface analysis. Specifically, we experiment using Ball on reciprocating tribo-tester and apply commercial engine oil sold on the market engine oil. We construct the experimental conditions for each new oil and oil. Accordingly, the completed specimen was subjected to a confocal microscope to check the wear volume, observe the surface of the specimen, and confirm the elemental components using a scanning microscope (SEM) and an energy dispersion X-ray spectrometer (EDS). Through this experiment, we analyze the friction and wear characteristics of valve train components according to engine oil grade, and the obtained data serve as an effective engine oil management method.

축산농가 차량소독기의 동파방지를 위한 약액 회수장치에 관한 연구 (The Study of Reclaimer of Antiseptic Solution for Winter-sowing Prevention of a Vehicle Disinfector at Livestock Farm)

  • This study was conducted to develop a reclaimer of the vehicle disinfector to be used at livestock fm. The reclaimer was mainly consisted of ball-valves, geared motors and one-chip processor, and the purpose of the system was to prevent liquid freezing as well as decrease environmental pollution of antiseptic solution. The properly spraying pressure of the vehicle disinfector was found over 1.96 MPa at 1m of the spraying range. While certain amount of the antiseptic solution remained in the injection-pipes, the spray starting time was found not making any significant effect on the remained amount of the antiseptic solution. The amounts of the antiseptic solution remained in the injection-pipes were 50 ml and 270 ml in average, respectively with and without the use of the reclaimer. The reclaimer was the most effective when the connection of the injection-pipe and sprayer line was located below the side-injection-pipe and then connected to the injection-pipe located at the bottom of vehicles.
