  • The success of a fuzzy logic control system solving any given problem critically depends on the architecture of th network. Various attempts have been made in optimizing its structure its structure using genetic algorithm automated designs. In a regular genetic algorithm , a difficulty exists which lies in the encoding of the problem by highly fit gene combinations of a fixed-length. This paper presents a new approach to structurally optimized designs of a fuzzy model. We use a messy genetic algorithm, whose main characteristics is the variable length of chromosomes. A messy genetic algorithms used to obtain structurally optimized fuzzy models. Structural optimization is regarded important before neural network based learning is switched into. We have applied the method to the exampled of a cart-pole balancing.

  • The objective of this paper is to present a methodology for automatically balancing multi-cavity injection molds with the aid of flow simulation. After the runner and cavity layout has been designed, the methodology adjusts runner and gate sizes iteratively based on the outputs of flow analysis. This methodology also ensures that the runner sizes in the final design are machinable. To illustrate this methodology, an example is used wherein a 3-cavity mold is modeled and filling of all the cavities at the same time is achieved. Based on the proposed methodology, a multicavity mold with identical cavities is balanced to minimize overall unfilled volume among various cavities at discrete time steps of the molding cycle. The example indicates that the described methodology can be used effectively to balance runner systems for multi-cavity molds.

  • The paper sets the goal as understanding relationship between usability and subjective preference with the cross- cultural comparison between korea and Japan. Total 42 Korean and japanese housewives participated in the experiment where subjects evaluated their subjective preferences on 16 different variations of computer-simulated microwave ovens. In additions, subjects also performed usability testing over 9 different microwave ovens with 6 different tasks given to users. Subjective preferences and usability were analyzed by Conjoint analysis to identify relative importance of features. The results showed that, in case of Korean subjects, subjective preference has positive relationship with usability (i.e. aesthetically good product also showed better performance in usability testing). However, Japanese subjects showed the tendency that subjectively preferred products are not necessarily evaluated good in usability testing (i.e. god aesthetic is one thing and high usability is another). this difference leads the speculation that culture plays a role in balancing the relationship between aesthetic and functionality.

  • For a rational evaluation of the spatial distribution of consolidation settlement, it is necessary to adopt probabilistic method. In this study, mean and standard deviation of consolidation settlement of whole analysis region are evaluated by using the spatial distribution of consolidation layer which is estimated from kriging and statistics of soil properties. Using these results and probabilistic method, the area need to be raised the ground level for balancing the final design ground level are determined.

  • The purpose of study is to examine fashion bags reflected women's changing lifestyle, their needs and vogue in modern environment since 20th century. Today fashion bags can be divided into practical bag, evening bag, luxury bag and utility bag. Practical bag is a type of tote which is perfect for working mom or women carrying lots of things on a daily basis. Evening bag is a symbol of femininity in respect for its handmade artistry and impracticality by its small size. Luxury bag embodies human desire for high quality and being part of prestige of luxury brand regardless of its cost. Utilitarian bag was coming from military or sports gear and are popular among young generation armed with mobile computing or crazy about popular music and all kinds of sports. In contemporary fashion culture, fashion bags play an important roles on balancing women's social and domestic life as functional and decorative accessory.

  • To develop glass panel vacuum lift system for the post process in module line of FPD(Flat panel display) such as LCD and PDP, new vacuum adsorption parts of this system are proposed. These parts are composed of variable geometry configurations utilizing ceramic porous medium for variable size of glass panels. In order to design this device, detail understanding of flow phenomena in the flow path of vacuum adsorption system is essential. Thus, CFD analysis and designs are performed for several configurations in terms of pressure drop and balancing force at the adsorption side. From the result, new configuration is recommended for optimum design and manufacturing purpose.

  • Chesin-1 telephone currently used in Korea is quite similar in design to early Japanese model of Type-4 telephone which is now being replaced by Type-600 having much improved characteristics. Chesin-1 telephone has a relatively high side-tone level, since the line impedance was taken as a purely resistive component for simplicity in the design of its transmission networks. To meet a current trend of using a smaller diameter of wire for telephone line, it is necessary to improve the present type which has a limited receiving efficiency. A new telephone set has been designed to have an amplifier and a R-C coupled side-tone balancing network. The set offers 8dB gain in the overall performance of transmitting and receiving without any unbearable side-tone disturbances. The paper describes both theoretical and experimental characteristics of the new set.

  • Cluster-based servers are utilized for large scale streaming services. These servers show good performance under fair resource usage balance policies between backend nodes. In this paper, cluster-based VOD servers are implemented based on WMI functions. Based on these functions, the information of resource usages in backend nodes can be exchanged and also the working states of cluster nodes can be monitored periodically. In experiences, we find motivations to design an effective load balancing policy. In addition, to provide reliable streaming services, the method to detect a partial failure in cluster-based servers is proposed.

  • This paper describes the design method of Time-to-Digital Converter(TDC) to obtain the constant delay time and good reliability. The reliability property is described with delay elements. In TDC the time signal is converted to digital value which is based on delay elements for the time interpolation. To obtain the constant delay time, the first and the last delay elements have different structure compared to the middle delay elements. In the first and the last delay elements, the driving ability could be controlled for the different delay time. The delay element can be designed by analog and digital devices. The delay time of the element using analog devices is not sensitive to process parameters than that of the element using digital devices. And the TDC circuit by the elements using analog devices shows better reliability than that by the elements using digital devices also.
