LAYOUT VERIFICATION METHOD FOR DESIGNING AND MANUFACTURING OF LCOS/AM OLED MICRODISPLAY BACKPLANES

  • In this presentation we will describe two core elements, which combination gives a new approach to layout verification; they are a computational algorithm for modeling of photolithographical processes and a method for physical layout verification that uses output contours of that algorithm. Utilization of this approach allows to improve the quality of LCOS/AM OLED backplanes physical verification, because it considers discrepancies between mask features and printed contours on a wafer.

  • A holding latch with level shifting function is proposed for power and cost effectiveness with low temperature polycrystalline silicon technology on the glass backplane. Layout area and power consumption of the proposed circuit are reduced by 10% and 52% compared with those of the typical structure which combines a static D-latch and a cross coupled level shifter for 2.2" qVGA panel, respectively.

  • A novel active matrix organic light diodes (AMOLEDs) voltage-programming pixel structure with current-correction method is proposed for largesize and high-resolution poly-Si AMOLED panel applications. The HSPICE simulation results shows that the maximum error of emission current in proposed pixel is 1.536%, 2.45%, and 2.97% with the ${\pm}12.5%$ mobility variation and ${\pm}0.3V$ threshold voltage variation for 30-, 40-, and 50-inch HDTV panels, respectively.

  • In this paper, key issues of stainless steel foil substrates for display applications have been described. We studied and analyzed technical issues on substrate passivation/planarization to control surface roughness and capacitive coupling from conductive substrates. A thick (either multiple or single) passivation/planarization layer needs to be applied on the nonelectronic-grade stainless steel substrate to provide a smooth surface and electrical insulation from the conductive substrate. Especially for large size, high-resolution display applications, low k and thick passivation/planarization layers should be used for appropriate capacitive coupling. Based on our initial study, a unit area capacitance of less than $2nF/cm^2$ of passivation/planarization layers is needed for 32" HD TV OLED displays.

  • We have proposed a novel cleaning technology with organic nanoparticles for high-performance TFT array. The surface of the TFT layer becomes more hydrophilic after cleaning by the nanoparticles. This is concluded from the comparison of contact angles for the samples cleaned by various methods. It is found that the drain currents in the subthreshold and off-state regions are less than those for the TFTs cleaned with conventional method.

  • EL (electro-luminescent) device as a light source has an advantage in embodying large area with great flexibility. On nickel foil as an electrode and backplane, we demonstrated a white EL flexible light source with blue phosphor layer combined with color change layer. A correlation between color change layer and color coordination was analyzed by Gaussian method, and then the color coordinate was controlled near to (0.33, 0.33) of pure white light.

Influence of Wet Annealing on the Performance of SiZnSnO Thin Film Transistors

  • Amorphous SiZnSnO(SZTO) thin film transistors(TFTs) have been fabricated by RF magnetron sputtering process, and they were annealed in air and in wet ambient. The electrical performance and the structure were analyzed by I-V measurement, XPS, AFM, and XRD. The results showed improvement in device performance by wet annealing process compared to air annealing treatment, because free electron was shown to be increased due to reaction of oxygen and hydrogen generating oxygen vacancy. This is understood by the generation of free electrons. We expect the wet annealing process to be a promising candidate to contributing to high electrical performance of oxide thin film transistors for backplane device applications.

  • A novel deposition process for n-type nanocrystalline silicon (n-type nc-Si) thin films at room temperature has been developed by adopting the neutral beam assisted chemical vapor deposition (NBa-CVD). During formation of n-type nc-Si thin film by the NBa-CVD process with silicon reflector electrode at room temperature, the energetic particles could induce enhance doping efficiency and crystalline phase in polymorphous-Si thin films without additional heating on substrate; The dark conductivity and substrate temperature of P-doped polymorphous~nano crystalline silicon thin films increased with increasing the reflector bias. The NB energy heating substrate(but lower than $80^{\circ}C$ and increase doping efficiency. This low temperature processed doped nano-crystalline can address key problem in applications from flexible display backplane thin film transistor to flexible solar cell.

  • A structure and a design of device were developed to fabricate large-scale active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) display with good color purity and high aperture ratio. With these technologies, we developed a full color 14.1 inch WXGA AMOLED display. For the integration of OLED on an active matrix a-Si TFT backplane, an efficient top emission OLED is essential since the TFT circuitry covers a large position of the pixel aperture. These technologies will enable up the OLED applications to larger size displays such as desktop monitors and TVs.
