  • This study analyzes the phase transition behavior and electrical properties of lead-free (1-x)K0.5Na0.5NbO3-xBaZrO3 (KNN-100xBZ) piezoelectric ceramics. The stabilized crystal structures in BaZrO3-modified KNN ceramics is clarified to be pseudocubic. The polymorphic phase transition from the orthorhombic to pseudocubic phases can be observed with KNN-6BZ ceramics considering the optimized piezoelectric constant (d33). Electromechanical strain behaviors are discussed. Accordingly, the enhancement of strain value at x = 0.08 (composition) may originate from the coexistence of ferroelectric domains and polar nanoregions. A schematic of domains for KNN, KNN-8BZ, and KNN-15BZ ceramics has been proposed to describe the relationship between the stabilized relaxor and changes in electrical properties.

  • Although the reversibility of 10,12-pentacosadiynoic amino meta-acid(PCDA-mBzA) against temperature and pH was reported, the modulation of reversibility by ion adsorption at terminal functional group has not been investigated. In this work, we developed a simple method for modulating the reversibility of PCDA-mBzA films upon a thermal stimulus by cadmium ion adsorption inducing the breakage of the outer hydrogen bonding of two hydrogen bonds, which are responsible for the reversible properties of PCDA-mBzA. External reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ER-FTIR) analyses revealed that the hydrogen bonding between the carboxylic acid groups was broken through ion adsorption and only a single hydrogen bond between the amide groups remained in the PCDA-mBzA polymer. In addition, PCDA-mBzA films could recover their original property through cadmium ion desorption. These results present that the transition between reversibility and irreversibility can be modulated artificially simply through the adsorption and desorption of metal ions.

  • Ketene-forming eliminations from C4H3(S)CH2C(O)O-C6H3-2-X-4-NO2 (1) promoted by R2NH in MeCN have been studied kinetically. The reactions are second-order and exhibit Bronsted β =0.51-0.62 and |βlg|= 0.47-0.53. Hence, an E2 mechanism is evident. The Bronsted β increased from 0.33 to 0.53 and |βlg| remained nearly the same by the change of the base-solvent from Bz(i-Pr)NH/Bz(i-Pr)NH2+ in 70 mol% MeCN(aq) to Bz(i-Pr)NH-MeCN, indicating a change to a more symmetrical transition state with similar extents of Cβ -H and Cα -OAr bond cleavage. When the β-aryl group was changed from thienyl to phenyl in MeCN, the β value increased from 0.53 to 0.73 and |βlg| decreased from 0.53 to 0.43. This indicates that the transition state became skewed toward more Cβ -H bond breaking with less Cα-OAr bond cleavage. Noteworthy is the greater double bond stabilizing ability of the thienyl group in the ketene-forming transition state.

  • Research on tripodal complexes has grown in recent decades and has been subject of numerous reports.1-11 The reasons for this interest include their relevance to model functions of metalloenzymes1-3 and their potential applications in catalysis.13-17 The ligand system used most in this category has been tren, the tripodal tetraamine N(CH2CH2NH2)3, and its derivatives.4 The bz3tren is a versatile tetradentate ligand, known to form stable complexes not only with transition metals5-11 including Cu2+, Zn2+ and Co2+ but also anion species.12 However, only few results on the d10 metal complexes with bz3tren have been reported by us10 and others.6,7 As a part of on going efforts, we therefore focus our attention to extend other d10 system that includes heavy metal ions.

  • The polyamide-amide-imide (PAAI) was synthesized by reacting 4,4'-diaminobenzanilide (DBA) with trimellitic anhydride chloride using a two-stage heating. The precursor of polyamide-acids was formed at first stage and followed by the formation of imide of PAAI. Two polyamide-imides (PAIs) were prepared from benzidine (BZ) or 4,4'-diaminodiphenylether (DPE) with trimellitic anhydride chloride. These three polymers had glass transition temperature in the temperature range of $240-250^{\circ}C$. X-ray data were obtained on thin film specimens cured at $250^{\circ}C$. There was a minimal kind of short-range order consisting of the most probable distances between neighboring chains. The average segmental spacing of short-range order decreased in the order of polymers obtained from 4,4'-diaminobenzanilide (DBA), polyamide-imide, and 4,4'-diaminodiphenylether (DPE). The imidization of three polyamide-imides was confirmed by $^{15}N$ MAS NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. $^{15}N$ NMR spectrum of cured polyamide-imide showed imide $^{15}N$ peak, thereby providing an evidence for the imidization of three polyamide-imides.
