A Laboratory-Scale Study of the Applicability of a Halophilic Sediment Bioelectrochemical System for in situ Reclamation of Water and Sediment in Brackish Aquaculture Ponds: Effects of Operational Conditions on Performance

  • Sediment bioelectrochemical systems (SBESs) can be integrated into brackish aquaculture ponds for in-situ bioremediation of the pond water and sediment. Such an in-situ system offers advantages including reduced treatment cost, reusability and simple handling. In order to realize such an application potential of the SBES, in this laboratory-scale study we investigated the effect of several controllable and uncontrollable operational factors on the in-situ bioremediation performance of a tank model of a brackish aquaculture pond, into which a SBES was integrated, in comparison with a natural degradation control model. The performance was evaluated in terms of electricity generation by the SBES, Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and nitrogen removal of both the tank water and the tank sediment. Real-life conditions of the operational parameters were also experimented to understand the most close-to-practice responses of the system to their changes. Predictable effects of controllable parameters including external resistance and electrode spacing, similar to those reported previously for the BESs, were shown by the results but exceptions were observed. Accordingly, while increasing the electrode spacing reduced the current densities but generally improved COD and nitrogen removal, increasing the external resistance could result in decreased COD removal but also increased nitrogen removal and decreased current densities. However, maximum electricity generation and COD removal efficiency difference of the SBES (versus the control) could be reached with an external resistance of $100{\Omega}$, not with the lowest one of $10{\Omega}$. The effects of uncontrollable parameters such as ambient temperature, salinity and pH of the pond (tank) water were rather unpredictable. Temperatures higher than $35^{\circ}C$ seemed to have more accelaration effect on natural degradation than on bioelectrochemical processes. Changing salinity seriously changed the electricity generation but did not clearly affect the bioremediation performance of the SBES, although at 2.5% salinity the SBES displayed a significantly more efficient removal of nitrogen in the water, compared to the control. Variation of pH to practically extreme levels (5.5 and 8.8) led to increased electricity generations but poorer performances of the SBES (vs. the control) in removing COD and nitrogen. Altogether, the results suggest some distinct responses of the SBES under brackish conditions and imply that COD removal and nitrogen removal in the system are not completely linked to bioelectrochemical processes but electrochemically enriched bacteria can still perform non-bioelectrochemical COD and nitrogen removals more efficiently than natural ones. The results confirm the application potential of the SBES in brackish aquaculture bioremediation and help propose efficient practices to warrant the success of such application in real-life scenarios.

Ultrasonic Degradation of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds in Seawater and Brackish Water

  • In this study, a series of experiments was conducted on the relative degradation of commonly known endocrine-disrupting compounds such as bisphenol A (BPA) and $17{\alpha}$-ethinyl estradiol (EE2) in a single-component aqueous solution using 28 and 580 kHz ultrasonic reactors. The experiments were conducted with three different types of model water: deionized water (DI), synthetic brackish water (SBW), and synthetic seawater (SSW) at pH 4, 7.5, and 11 in the presence of inert glass beads and humic acids. Significantly higher sonochemical degradation (93-97% for BPA) occurred at 580 kHz than at 28 kHz (43-61% for BPA), regardless of water type. A slightly higher degradation was observed for EE2 compared to that of BPA. The degradation rate of BPA and EE2 in DI water, SBW, and SSW after 30 min of ultrasound irradiation at 580 kHz increased slightly with the increase in pH from 4 (0.073-0.091 $min^{-1}$ for BPA and 0.081-0.094 $min^{-1}$ for EE2) to 7.5 (0.087-0.114 $min^{-1}$ for BPA and 0.092-0.124 $min^{-1}$ for EE2). In contrast, significant degradation was observed at pH 11 (0.149-0.221 $min^{-1}$ for BPA and 0.147-0.228 $min^{-1}$ for EE2). For the given frequencies of 28 and 580 kHz, the degradation rate increased in the presence of glass beads (0.1 mm and 25 g) for both BPA and EE2: 0.018-0.107 $min^{-1}$ without beads and 0.052-0.142 $min^{-1}$ with beads for BPA; 0.021-0.111 $min^{-1}$ without beads and 0.054-0.136 $min^{-1}$ with beads for EE2. A slight increase in degradation of both BPA and EE2 was found as the concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC, humic acids) increased in both SBW and SSW: 0.107-0.115 $min^{-1}$ in SBW and 0.087-0.101 $min^{-1}$ in SSW for BPA; 0.111-0.111 $min^{-1}$ in SWB and 0.092-0.105 $min^{-1}$ in SSW for EE2. After 30 min of sonicating the humic acid solution, DOC removal varied depending on the water type: 27% (3 mg $L^{-1}$) and 7% (10 mg $L^{-1}$) in SBW and 7% (3 mg $L^{-1}$) and 4% (10 mg $L^{-1}$) in SSW.

Ecosysteme de I′Etang de Berre (Mediterranee nord-occidentale) : Caracteres Generales Physiques, Chimiques et Biologiques

  • Climatological, hydrological and planktonical research studies, measurements of primary production and photosynthetic efficiency from December 1976 to December 1978 have been carried out in two brackish lakes: Lake Etang de Berre and Lake Etang de Vaine located in the French Mediterranean coast, in the region of Carry-le-Rouet located on the north-west Mediterranean near Marseilles, and in fresh water inflows from 4 Rivers (Touloubre, Durance, Arc, Durancole) to Lake Etang de Berre. Physico-chemical parameters were measured for this study: water temperature, salinity, density, pH, alcalinity, dissolved oxygen (% saturation), phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, silicate etc. Diverse biological parameters were also studied: photosynthetic pigments, phaeopigments, specific composition and biomass of phytoplankton, primary pelagic production etc. Climatical factors were studied: air-temperature, solar-radiation, evaporation, direction (including strength) of winds, precipitation and freshwater volume of the four rivers. The changes in Lake ‘Etang de Berre’ ecosystem depend on the quality of the water in the Durance River, and on the effects of seawater near the entrance of the Caronte Canal. The water quality of the lake varies horizontally and vertically as a result of atmospheric phenomena, maritime currents and tides. The distribution of water temperatures is generally heterogeneous. Southeasterly winds and the Northeasterly Mistral wind are important in the origins of circulated and mixed water masses. These winds are both frequent and strong. They have, as a result, a great effect on the water environment of Lake Etang de Berre. In theory, the annual precipitation in this region is well over eight times the water mass of the lake. The water of the Durance River flows into Lake Etang de Berre through the EDF Canal, amounting to 90% of the precipitation. However, reduction of rainfall in dry seasons has a serious effect on the hydrological characteristics of the lake. The temperature in the winter is partially caused by the low temperature of fresh water, particularly that of the Durance River. The hydrological season of fresh and brackish water is about one month ahead of the hydrological season of sea water in its vicinity. The salinity of Lake Etang de Berre runs approximately 3$\textperthousand$, except at lower levels and near the entrance to the Caronte Canal. However, when the volume of the Durance River water is reduced in the summer and fall, the salinity rises to 15$\textperthousand$. In the lake, the ratio of fresh water to sea water is six to one (6:1). The large quantities of seston conveyed by rivers, particularly the Durance diversion, strongly reduce the transparency in the brackish waters. Although the amount of sunshine is also notable, transparency is slight because of the large amount of seston, carried chiefly by Tripton in the fresh water of the Durance River. Therefore, photosynthesis generally occurs only in the surface layer. The transparency progressively increases from freshwater to open seawater, as mineral particles sink to the bottom (about 1.7kg $m^{-2}a^{-1}$ on the average in brackish lakes). The concentration of dissolved oxygen and the rate of oxygen saturation in seawater (Carry-le-Rouet) ranged from 5.0 to 6.0 $m\ell$ㆍ.$1^{-1}$, and from 95 to 105%, respectively. The amount of dissolved oxygen in Etang de Berre oscillated between 2.9 and 268.3%. The monographs of phosphate, nitrate, nitrite and silicate were published as a part of a study on the ecology of phytoplankton in these environments. Horizontal and vertical distributions of these nutriments were studied in detail. The recent diversion of the Durance River into Lake Etang de Berre has effected a fundamental change in this formerly marine environment, which has had a great impact in its plankton populations. A total of 182 taxa were identified, including 111 Bacillariophyceae, 44 Chlorophyceae, and 15 Cyanophyceae. The most abundant species are small freshwater algae, mainly Chlorophyceae. The average density is about $10^{8}$ cells $1^{-1}$ in Lake Etang de Berre, and about double that amount in Lake Etang de Vaine. Differences in phytoplankton abundance and composition at the various stations or at various depths are slight. Cell biovolume V (equivalent to true biomass), plasma volume VP (‘useful’ biomass) and, simultaneously. the cell surface area S and S/V ratio through the measurement of cell dimensions were computed as the parameters of phytoplankton productivity and metabolism. Pigment concentrations are generally very high on account of phytoplankton blooms by Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae and Cryptophyceae. On the other hand, in freshwaters and marine waters, pigment concentrations are comparatively low and stable, showing slight annual variation. The variations of ATP concentration were closely related to those of chlorophyll a and phytoplankton blooms only in marine waters. The carbon uptake rates ranged between 38 and 1091 mg$Cm^{-2}d^{-1}$, with an average surface value of 256 mg; water-column carbon-uptake rates ranged between 240 and 2310 mg$Cm^{-2}d^{-1}$, with an average of 810, representing 290 mg$Cm^{-2}$, per year 45 000 tons per year of photosynthetized carbon for the whole lake. Gross photosynthetic production measured by the method of Ryther was studied over a 2-year period. The values obtained from marine water(Carry-le-Rouet) ranged from 23 to 2 337 mg$Cm^{-2}d^{-1}$, with a weighted average of 319, representing about 110 gCm$^{-2}$ per year. The values in brakish water (Etang de Berre) ranged from 14 to 1778 mg$Cm^{-2}d^{-1}$, with a weighted average of 682, representing 250 mg$Cm^{-2}$ per year and 38 400 tons per year of photosynthesized carbon for the whole lake.

시화호 상류 기수역에서 입자성유기물에 대한 조류영향 (Effect of Algal Fraction to Particulate Organic Matter in the Upper Regions of a Brackish Lake Sihwa)

  • 해수와 담수가 공존하는 시화호 상류 기수역에서 입자성유기물에 대한 조류의 영향을 평가하기 위하여, 2005년과 2006년 3월부터 11월까지 기수역내 7개 지점을 대상으로 입자성유기탄소 (particulate organic carbon; POC), 식물플랑크톤 색소(chlorophyll a; Chl-a), pheophytin a; Pheo-a)의 시공간적 변동과 상관관계를 분석하였다. 조사기간 동안 POC 농도는 $1.0{\sim}76.6mgL^{-1}$ (평균 $7.4mgL^{-1}$)의 범위로 봄에 높은 계절변화를 보였으며, 염분성층이 강하고 고탁도층이 형성되는 중류부에서 높은 값을 보였다. 살아있는 식물플랑크톤의 현존량의 지표로 이용되는 Chl-a 농도는 $1.3{\sim}942.9{\mu}gL^{-1}$ (평균 $71.0{\mu}gL^{-1}$) 범위로 매우 높은 값을 보였고, 4월에 중류부에 최고치를 보여 POC와 유사한 변동을 보였다. 한편 Pheo-a 농도는 $1.4{\sim}1,545.5{\mu}gL^{-1}$ (평균 $59.9{\mu}gL^{-1}$)의 범위로, total Chl-a의 평균 44.2%로 죽거나 활성을 잃은 식물플랑크톤의 양이 많은 것으로 나타났다. POC 농도는 식물플랑크톤 색소와 강한 양의 상관(Chl-a (r=0.93), total Chl-a (r=0.88), >Pheo-a (r=0.81))을 보였는데, 이는 시화호 기수역에서 식물플랑크톤이 POC의 중요한 기원임을 시사한다. 한편 식물플랑크톤 색소와 POC와의 회귀식으로부터 POC/Chl-a 비(82.9)보다 POC/total Chl-a 비(35.9)가 하구에서 조사된 POC/Chl-a 비(40~60)에 더 유사한 것으로 나타났다. 그러므로 시화호 기수역과 같이 Pheo-a 농도가 높은 수역에서는 조류기원성 POC를 산정하거나 또는 수체의 POC 농도에 대한 식물플랑크톤의 기여도를 평가할 때 Chl-a 농도와 함께 Pheo-a 농도도 함께 고려할 필요가 있다.

형산강 유역 담수어와 반철수어에 있어서 흡충류 피낭유충 기생상 (Infestation of larval trematodes from fresh-water fish and brackish-water fish in River Hyungsan, Kyungpook Province, Korea)

  • 경북 월성군 치슬령 북측 능선에서 기원하여 포항시 송정동에 하구를 형성하고 있는 외출람에 호식하는 담수어와 반철수어에서의 흡충류 피낭유충 기생상을 알아보기 위해 1983연 3월부터 동년 10f3까지 형산강 유역에서 투망, 낚시, 사발모지 등으로 담수어와 반섬수어를 채집하였다. 채집된 어류는 어종별로 분류한 다음 어체 부위별로 흡충류 피낭유충의 기생상을 조사함과 동시에 신선한 어육 1gram당 피복유충수를 계산하여 감염정도를 추정하였다. 채집된 11종의 어류에서 7종의 흡충류 피습유충과 소속미정 유충을 검출할 수 있었으며, 이 가운데 Exochits oviformis유충은 전 피검어에서 검출할 수 있었고, Metagonimus yokognwai유충은 9종의 어류에서, Cyathocotyle orientalis 유충과 Metacercaria hasegawai 유충, Metorchis orientalis 유충은 6종의 어류에서, 간흡충 피낭유충은 4종의 어류에서 검출할 수 있었으며, 그 기생률은 어종별로 큰 차리를 보였다. 어육 Igram당 간흡충 피낭유충 평균수는 몰개에서는 45.5개로 가장 많았고 납지리에서는 0.05개로 가장 적었으며 참붕어와 돌고기에서는 각각 9.7개, 11.6개로 중간치를 나타내었다. 횡천흡충의 피낭유충수는 붕어, 몰개, 버들치, 납지리, 참붕어, 퍼래미, 같겨니에서 모두 10개 이하 이었는데 비하여 은어에서는 32.9개로서 담수어보다 반철수어에서 그 수가 많았다. 이상의 성적으로 미루어 보아 경북 형산강에 서식하고 있는 담수어와 반철수어의 회를 생식하면 간흡충증과 횡천흡충증에 감염될 것으로 추정된다.

사육조건에 따른 일본(기수)재첩 유생의 성장과 생존 (Growth and survival of the brackish water clam, Corbicula japonica larvae according to rearing conditions)

  • 일본(기수)재첩 유생사육을 위한 최적조건을 파악하기 위하여 수온, 염분, 유생 수용밀도, 먹이생물 종류 및 공급량, 채묘방법에 따른 성장과 생존율을 조사하였다. 일본(기수)재첩의 부유유생은 $24^{\circ}C$$27^{\circ}C$에서 빠른 성장을 보였으며, $18^{\circ}C$$21^{\circ}C$에서 50% 이상의 높은 생존율을 보임으로서 유생 사육을 위한 적정 수온은 $21-24^{\circ}C$이며, 최적수온은 $24^{\circ}C$ 이었다. 또한 염분 3 psu 이상에서 성장과 생존이 가능하였으나 적정 염분은 6-9 psu 이었다. 유생밀도별 사육시험에서 1 ml당 1-10 개체에서 높은 성장과 생존율을 보였으나 경제성을 고려한 적정 유생사육 밀도는 1 ml당 10 개체였다. 먹이생물에 따른 유생의 성장과 생존율은 Isochrysis galbana, Pavlova lutheri 및 Chaetoceros calcitrans를 혼합하여 10,000-20,000 cells/ml의 밀도로 공급하는 것이 가장 효과적이었다. 성숙유생의 채묘는 모래저질에서 성장과 생존율이 유의하게 효과적이었으며, 특히 0.25 mm 이하의 미세사질에서 높은 생존율을 보였다.

물 교환이 제한적인 시화호 상류 기수역의 부영양화 (Eutrophication in the Upper Regions of Brackish Lake Sihwa with a Limited Water Exchange)

  • 물 교환이 제한적인 시화호 상류 기수역의 부영양화 현상을 이해하고자 기수역내 7개 지점을 선정하여 2005년과 2006년 3월부터 11월까지 수질 및 퇴적물의 시공간적 분포 조사와 오염도 평가를 실시하였다. 시화호 기수역의 영양염류와 엽록소 $\alpha$(Chl-$\alpha$)및 유기물의 농도분포는 시공간적으로 변동이 컸으며, 전반적으로 염분성층이 강하게 형성되는 중류지점에서 높은 농도를 보이는 경향을 보였다 조사기간 동안 TN, TP, Chl-$\alpha$ 농도는 각각 $1.2{\sim}11.0\;mg\;L^{-1}$, $0.056{\sim}2.992\;mg\;L^{-1}$, $1.3{\sim}942.9\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$으로 대부분 지점에서 부영양 또는 과영양 상태를 나타냈다. 또한 기수역의 부영양화지수(TSI) $61{\sim}86$의 범위로 과영양호 수준을 보였으며, 중류지점에서 높은 값을 보였다. 기수역의 식물플랑크톤의 대량증식 현상은 매년 4월에 중류지점에서 나타났으며, 영양염류와 Chl. $\alpha$ 농도 사이의 상관분석으로부터 식물플랑크톤의 증식은 TN (r=0.31)보다 TP (r=0.65)가 관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 한편 기수역의 표층퇴적물 내 COD 함량은 전 지점에서 중간오염의 수준을 보였지만, TN과 TP 함량은 중하류지점에서 오염이 심한 수준으로 나타났다. 또한 표층퇴적물의 입도분포로부터 연안성퇴적물에서 가장 많이 나타나는 실트의 조성비 ($38{\sim}60%$)가 중류지점에서 가장 많은 것으로 보아 이 지점에서 염분성층과 퇴적현상이 가장 많은 것으로 사료된다. 본 연구의 결과로부터 물 교환이 제한적인 시화호 상류 기수역의 수질 및 표층퇴적물의 오염도는 타 수역에 비해 매우 높은 것으로 판단된다. 또한 시화호 상류 기수역의 부영양화 현상은 자연적인 기수역에 비해 강하게 형성된 염분성층에 의한 물의 정체현상 및 심층산소고갈 현상과 유역으로부터 많은 양의 인 유입과 퇴적물로부터 인 용출에 의한 것으로 사료된다.

A human case of Stellantchasmus falcatus infection in Korea

  • In an attempt to find the worm producing unidentified egg, one minute fluke was collect from a Korean patient after praziquantel administration. The fluke was identified to be Stellantchasmus falcatus by the expulsor. Brackish water fish was suggested to be a probable source of the infection.

낙동강하구 새섬매자기(Bolboschoenus planiculmis) 복원 모니터링: 식물체(shoot) 식재를 이용한 습지복원 (Monitoring on Bolboschoenus planiculmis Restoration in Nakdong River Estuary: Implications for Wetland Restoration Using Shoot Transplantation)

  • Bolboschoenus planiculmis has been acknowledged as a key species in whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus) habitat by providing food for this migratory waterfowl. B. planiculmis wetlands are being degraded by water shortages and salinization caused by anthropogenic activities and climate changes. In 2004, the distribution of B. planiculmis in the tidal flats of the Nakdong Estuary was 2,475,568 m2, and in 2021, the distribution area was 798,731 m2, which decreased by 32.3%. In order to restore the degraded B. planiculmis wetlands, shoot transplantation and seed sowing were tentatively used in three places with different salinity and water levels. The average density per unit area in September at the optimal growth period after planting were A (fresh water level 50 cm) 58±15.65 m-2, B (brackish water level 0~5 cm) 188±63.83 m-2, C (brackish water level 0 cm or less) 188±45.13 m-2. The tubers were observed as A 0 g dw m-2, B 25.32±2.94 g dw m-2, and C 13.39±0.91 g dw m-2. Tubers were distributed in the soil, with only 3.0% at the 10~20 cm depth but 97.0% at the 0~10 cm depth. In contrast, the germination rate of B. planiculmis seeds was observed to be 0%. Results of this study provide technical support for the restoration of B. planiculmis wetland and the improvement in the quality of whooper swans habitat.

New Records of the Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) in the Brackish and Coastal Waters of Korea

  • A study on indigenous diatoms was carried out at 10 sites from May 2014 to December 2016 in marine and freshwater in Korea. Seventeen species of diatoms are new to Korea and they are divided into 3 classes, 4 subclasses, 10 orders, 14 families, and 16 genera. The nomenclatures, references, dimensions, specimens examined, local habitat, distribution in Korea, and photograph are reported here. Seventeen species found in marine, freshwater, and brackish water showed species-specific habitats.
