  • This paper is concerned with an automatic generation of BOM (Bill Of Material) for a bicycle frame set using a knowledge based system. The major components module system includes : (1) Part information retrieval in CAD drawing, (2) BOM code generation rule, and (3) Database interface. The knowledge based system includes a rule base and a fact base. The fact base consists of basic, variant, and optional components of the standard BOMs of frame sets. The rule contains rules for generating new BOM code in case that the specified is not in the database. The system was implemented on a SUN workstation under Open Windows environments. AutoCAD for CAD drawing was also used.

  • Since past till now, automotive wiring harness has been designed and produced under the method of part number list. However, the number of options has increased gradually on the basis of customer's needs and car manufacturer's policy, thereby bringing about an increase in the number of classified parts. Because of a large number of classified parts, cost estimates for manufacturing and production planning are more important than ever. However, the pre-existing manufacturing bill of material abbreviated as BOM is only focused on the list of materials used for actual manufacturing, and as such there have been limits to other fields or areas of usage except for manufacturing. In essence, the present paper is concerned with our study conducted on modular BOM as one of planning BOM. On such basis, we have been able to completely use a method by which to have access, make an option units' calculation in wiring harness manufacturing, and build an efficient system for cost estimates in manufacturing as well.

  • As a product structure or BOM(bill of material) of products is hierarchically structured, the design based on the concept of relational data base modeling causes low performances in data search or processing. For this reason, an object-oriented approach to designing a product structure is proposed in this paper. Using Rumbaugh's OMT (Object Modeling Technique) method, classes of parts, BOM structure, options, and models are defined and their class-relationship diagrams are proposed. For the representation of the BOM structure suitable for the object-oriented paradigm, a new data architecture called the BOM item class is suggested. It is expected that the proposed data structure ensures better reusability and expandability due to the modularity.

  • In this study, we propose an integrated CAD(Computer Aided Design) library database in a heterogeneous commercial ECAD(Electronic CAD) environment. To effectively solve engineering problems focused on BOM data extraction we use a software system called schematic capture and company-wide standard electronic part information loaded on different commercial ECADs. We unify many commercial ECADs into one schematic capture and a variety of PCB(Printed Circuit Board) design tools. For this purpose we develope a model for linking CAD symbol library with company-wide standard part information. We also develope a schematic design data conversion scheme and show how to extract PBA level BOM data using our customized schematic capture. This system is being operated in an X-Window based engineering work station and commercial RDBMS base.

  • 오늘날 현대사회는 인터넷의 보급으로 지식정보화사회로 급속도로 변화하고 있다. 이전 대량생산시대와는 달리 소비자들의 욕구와 기호는 매우 다양하게 형성되고 있다. 여러 기업들이 생산하는 제품들도 대부분 시기와 계절에 따라 생산율과 판매율이 달라지고 있는 실정이다. 제품들의 생산 및 원가산출, 적정재고량 파악을 위해 기업들은 BOM(Bill of Material)을 작성하여 관리하고 있다. 하지만, 다양하게 변화하는 현대사회에 요구사항을 반영하지 못하고 여러 문제점들을 야기하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 원자재 공급업체에서부터 판매회사까지의 자동발주시스템을 완성하여 보고자 한다.

  • Most design changes are due to interferences and fit-up as parts are assembled if such a large product as an automobile or an aircraft is developed by many concurrent engineers. In this part (1) of the thesis, the assembly-centric modeling methodology with CAD systems is proposed in order to reduce the design changes. Unlike part-centric modeling method, a part is modeled with its own coordinate system which is used in downstream process as machining and measuring. The part coordinates initially have the same orientation as its assembly which is predefined in BOM (Bill of Material). Then, the corrdinates origin of the part is moved to its location to be assembled from that of its assembly coordinate system. To implement this methodology, the position data of the part w.r.t. its assembly are stored in a database to build the same hierarchical assembling structure as BOM structure. This modeling approach has the advantage of reflecting asembling sequence, because the process of positioning parts is similar to that of real assembling. And with the method, a designer can easily adjust all of the part positions of an assembly to resolve interferences if he modifies just the coordinates origin of the assembly, which results in moving included parts and assemblies together.

  • Up to date cosmetic OEM/ODM (original equipment manufacturing/original development manufacturing) industry receives attention as a future growth engine due to steady growth. However, because of limited research and development capability, many companies have employed commercial management platforms specialized for large-sized companies; thus, overall system effectiveness and efficiency is low. Especially, MRP (material requirement planning) system introduced originally in 1970s is employed to calculate the requirement of the parts. However, dynamic nature of production lead time usually results in incorrect requirements. In addition, its algorithm does not consider the capability of the production resources. Also, because the commercial MRP system calculates all subcomponent for fixed period, the more goods have subcomponent, the slower calculation is. Therefore, conventional MRP system cannot respond complicated situation in time. In this study, we will suggest a new method that can respond to complicated situations resulting from short lead time and urgent production order in Korean cosmetic market. In particular, a distributed MRP system is proposed, that consists of multi-functional and operational modules, based on the characteristic of the BOM (bill of material). The distributed MRP system divides components (i.e. products and parts) into several fields and decrease the problem size; thus, we can respond to dynamically changed data any time. Through this solution, we can order components quickly, adjust schedules and planned quantity, and manage stocks reasonably. In addition, a prototype of the distributed MRP system is presented in this paper, in which ERP (enterprise resource planning) sever data is associated with an excel spreadsheet via MSsql. System user interface is implemented by a VBA (visual basic for applications) tool. According to a case study, response rate for delivery and planning achievement rate were enhanced about 20%, and inventory turnover was also decreased. Consequently, the proposed system improves overall profit.

The Development of the Drawing Information Management System Based on Group Technology (Group Technology를 이용한 설계정보관리 시스템의 개발)

  • In order to provide economic high-quality products to customers in a timely manner, companies have tried much effort to decrease the time period of engineering design and information management. As a part of this effort, we have developed the Drawing Information Management System(DIMS) based ofn GT(Group Technology) that could decrease design processing time by speedy and rational management of design processes. The characteristics of DIMS are as follows: First, the concept of Concurrent Engineering was applied to DIMS. Through LAN, reviewers are able to attach comments to dlectronic documents by anno- tation functions called Mark-up. The reviewer annotations are collected and combind with the original document to revise the documents. Second, we have developed a Classification and Coding(C&C) system suitable for electronic component parts bassed on GT(Group Technology). The C&C system makes both parts and drawing with similar characteriscs into families and helps users search existing documents or create new drawings promptly. Finally, DIMS provides the Engineering BOM(Bill of Material) using the concept of Family BOM based on model options.

  • DSME has successfully developed the unified CAD system (DACOS) for the commercial ship based on its design know-how accumulated for several years. Currently, DSME is expanding the unified CAD system to plant and special ship design. In this paper, the development of pipe design, especially, isometric drawing and BOM(Bill of Material) generation will be introduced isometric drawing and BOM generation are major activities of pipe design in shipbuilding. The drawing is used for pipe construction and installation while the BOM is used for purchasing and manufacturing pipe line. These activities are time-consuming and tedious jobs done by designers because the drawing should be generated as a non-scaled symbolized drawing that can be easily understood and the BOM information should be extracted without mistake. Therefore, we implemented automatic isometric drawing and 80M generation system for pipe design. In this paper, the developed system and the used technology will as well be introduced and a design output in a plant project as an applied example will be illustrated.
