  • Trickling filter has been extensively studied for the domestic wastewater treatment especially for the small scale plants in rural area. The purpose of this research is to survey the physical and microbial characteristics of wood chip media and the removal efficiency of animal wastewater using wood chip trickling filter system. The trickling filtration system comprises a filtration bed packed with wood chip media having a particle dia. of 5~7cm. The method comprises natural air from the bottom of the bed. The system also comprises a control mechanism including a time a constant discharge pump for controlling supply of the wastewater into the bed. The following conclusions were obtained from the results of this research. 1. The specific surface area of wood chip was 0.4123 $m^2$/g, pore volume was 0.0947 $cm^3$/g, density was 0.49 g/$cm^3$. It has forms of parallelogram and oblong which have numerous small pore space. This wood chip has been good condition for microorganism's habitat, having very larger specific surface area by complex the three dimension structure of cellulose at wood's major ingredients. 2. The total counts of in attached aerobic microbes were ranged from $10^6$ to $10^8$ CFU/g, and anaerobes microbial numbers were from $10^4$ to $10^7$. The aerobic microbial numbers appeared to be much more than those of anaerobic microbial numbers. 3. The average efficiency of $BOD_5$ and CODcr were 74.5% and 51.5%, respectively. The removal efficiency of T-N and T-P were 61.4%, 56.2%, respectively. But SS removal levels remain 19.3%.

  • Storm runoff from road contains significant loads of particulate and dissolved solids, organic constituents and metal elements. Micro particle is important when considering pollution mitigation because pollutant metal and organics have similar behavior with particles. The objective of this research is to evaluate the hydrodynamic filter separator performance for road storm runoff treatment. A various types of media such as perlite, granular activated carbon, zeolite were used for column test packing media and filter separator, and to determine the removal efficiency with various surface loading rate. As the results of column test, the highest SS removal efficiency was using mixed media(granular activated carbon, zeolite and perlite), and granular activated carbon mixed with zeolite has higher heavy metal removal efficiency than perlite. In laboratory scale hydrodynamic filter separator study, the operation ranges of surface loading rates were from 192 to 1,469 $m^3/m^2/day$. The estimated overall removal efficiencies of hydrodynamic filter separator for typical storm runoff were SS 48.1%, BOD 31.9%, COD 32.6%, TN 15.5%, and TP 17.3%, respectively. For the case of heavy metals, overall removal efficiencies were Fe 26.0%, Cu 19.4%, Cr 25.7, Zn 16.6%, and Pb 15.0%, respectively. The most appropriate medium for hydrodynamic filter separator was perlite mixed with granular activated carbon to treatment of road storm runoff.

  • This study was performed to improve water quality of stream by applying hydraulic structures (weir and river bed material) made of porous concrete. The physical and chemical characteristics of porous concrete were measured to estimate application possibility of it in hydraulic structures and it was considered as a proper material for the hydraulic structures. In the results of comparison for the component of matters attached on the hydraulic structures made of porous and ordinary concrete, DW (dry weight) amount attached on porous concrete was 1.6 times higher than that on ordinary concrete under the condition of the same flow rate but influence by flow rate (difference of 10 times) was not shown. Therefore, we could understand that the material of media was more important in DW amount than flow rate. The rate of AFDM (ash free dry mass) to DW also was more at porous concrete than at ordinary concrete. Especially, the high rates of nitrogen and phosphorous in matters attached on porous concrete verify that they were removed by assimilation, adsorption and metabolism of periphyton. The removal percentage of SS, BOD, COD, T-N and T-P by hydraulic structures applying porous concrete compared with ordinary concrete was increased by 34.6%, 36.9%, 33.9%, 18.3% and 21.6%, respectively. Therefore, applying porous concrete to hydraulic structure is expected to contribute to improvement of stream water quality.

  • The purpose of this research was to compare the nutrient removal efficiency, and to estimate the net reaction time in order to calculate a "phase" transfer rate. SBR(SBR1) with flexible verticals and single reactor SBR(SBR1). Consequently, the removal efficiencies of $COD_{Cr}$, and $BOD_5$ in SBR1 and SBR2 were 91.5%, 97.5% and 90.4%, 97.3%, Respectively. Accordingly, the organic removal efficiency was not distinguished in both processes. In the T-N and T-P removal efficiencies, however, SBR1 obtained higher removal efficiency than SBR2, at 12.1% and 7.6% respectively. Also, in the experiment to estimate the "phase" transfer rate, SBR1 was higher than SBR2 Because SBR1 has two phases in the single reactor simultaneously, it has the buffer capacity to reduce the "phase" transfer time and provides a definite reaction condition.

  • A bioreactor filling with pellets and stones was equipped to the swine manure treatment system, which is expected to emit high concentration of odor in the process of the organic wastewater treatment system, and in comparison with the activated sludge process as the control process, the reactor operation state, treatment water quality and odor emission concentration were measured. The reactor using the bioreactor proved to be much more stable in the bubble condition, treatment water transparency, etc, and BOD removal efficiency was also much better. The removal efficiency of T-N and T-P, however, showed little difference in the two reactors. Odor, as a result of examining $NH_3-N$, $NH_3$ concentratio, and complex odor, was 4 times to 24 times less emitted in the system using bioreactor than in the activated sludge system. $H_2S$, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, and dimethyl disulfide were not found or were found in only 5 ppbs in each reactor and showed little difference between the two reactors. In the bioreactor process, Bacillus sp./ Pseudomonas sp. species were mainly found and in the activated sludge process, acterium sp. Chryseobacterium sp. species were mainly found.

  • To improve the ability of oxygen transfer in Biological Fluidised Bed(BFB) processes, air lift aeration system was introduced, experimental investigations were performed for the oxygen transfer in reactor, the fluidisation as to Biomass Volatile Solids variation and the relationship between substrate removal rate and oxygen utilization. The experiments for this purpose were executed for the synthetic wastewater by continuous type reactor at $20^{\circ}C$ using reticulated polypropylene sheets as media. The obtained results showed that the oxygen transfer by air lift aeration would be more effective than any other aeration systems used in BFB reactor. Also, it has observed that the critical biomass concentration in reactor took a range of 20 to 23g/l. Applying cages to BFB reactor, biomass would be maintained uniformly in the bed and the fluidisation characteristics of media could be improved. Varying F/M ratio from 0.36 to 0.73, BOD removals were 91% or more. Therefore, this process was suited to the treatment of which F/M ratios are variable and specific oxygen uptake rates ($K_r$) were 0.23 to 0.26g $O_2/g\;VSS{\cdot}day$ at range of 15 to 20g BVS/l.

  • Protected area of water for supply source is located mostly of rural area in Korea. Normally, sewage treatment system is poor to manage in rural, because low population and density. Rural area need sewage treatment system to supervise supply source of water. In this study, analysis on operation result of 4 RCSTP and MWTP is located at the rural area. Higher concentration of pollutant were inflows to MWTP than RCSTP, and effluent quality standard is satisfaction. However, RCSTP effluent pollutant concentrations was researched higher than MWTP. The organic matter(BOD, COD) were about 5% of a high treatment efficiency to a median. The nutrient(T-N, T-P) were detected Up to high 30%. Also, we analyzed to effect reactor operational parameters on the pollutant treatment efficiency like mixed liquer suspended solid(MLSS), dissolved oxygen(DO) and sludge retention time(SRT). As a result, pollutant treatment efficiency showed fluctuation in accordance with operating condition. Thus, it is necessary to manage the reactor operation condition for management of rural area sewage treatment.

  • Researches about NPS(Non-point Pollution Source) reduction have been widely carried out in recent years. A pilot channel-type constructed wetland (wet swale) was constructed in Rongyin area to treat stormwater generated from a green house agro-land of 22.7 ha. From 2006 to 2008, monitoring was conducted to evaluate its performance on the removal effect for organic pollutants as well as nutrients. Totally, sampling trips of 17 rainfall events were made and they covered most types of storm events in Korea. The channel-type constructed wetland have average removal efficiencies of 78.3~92.0%, 56.4~66.1%, 28.2~45.5% and 50.6~66.4% for SS, COD, TN and TP, respectively. According to four methods for estimating the removal efficiency, the average efficiencies of TSS, COD, TN and TP are 86.0%, 60.1%, 30.1% and 53.5%, respectively. From 2006 to 2008, annual efficiency improved due to infiltration potential increase. It was found that most of the pollutants removed in this channel type of wetland was particulate solids bound pollutants, which is assumed fact that it lacks of physico-chemical treatment conditions which are commonly observed in the retention type of constructed wetlands.
