결 과 : BMI는 TAF(r=0.91476, P<0.0001), VAT(r=0.51719, P=0.0115), SAAT(r=0.88302, P<0.0001)와 유의한 상관관계가 있었다. CTL/CTS비와 BMI(r=-0.11938, P=0.5876), TAF(r=-0.14936, P=0.4964), VAT(r=-0.31234, P=0.1468), SAAT(r=-0.08154, P=0.7115), VSR(r=-0.19202, P=0.3801), AST(r=0.12729, P=0.5628), ALT(r=-0.00179, P=0.9935) 및 AST/ALT비(r=0.20762, P=0.3418) 사이에 유의한 상관관계가 없었다. 결 론 : 소아 비만에서 BMI는 내장 지방 정도를 반영하나 복부 CT상 지방간의 정도와 간 효소치, BMI, 내장 지방량 사이에 유의한 상관관계가 없었다.
Purpose: The number of obese patients seeking total hip arthroplasty (THA) continues to expand despite body mass index (BMI) cutoffs. We sought to determine the outcomes of THA in the morbidly obese patient, and hypothesized they would have comparable outcomes to two cohorts of obese, and normal weight patients. Materials and Methods: THA performed on morbidly obese patients (BMI >40 kg/m2) at a single academic center from 2010 until 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Eighty morbidly obese patients were identified, and matched in a 1:3:3 ratio to control cohorts with BMI 30-40 kg/m2 and BMI <30 kg/m2. Acute postoperative outcomes and BMI change after surgery were evaluated for clinical significance with univariate and regression analyses. Cox proportional hazard ratio was calculated to evaluate prosthetic joint infection (PJI) and revision surgery through follow-up. Mean follow-up was 3.9 years. Results: In the acute postoperative period, morbidly obese patients trended towards increased hospital length of stay, facility discharge and 90-day hospital returns. At final follow-up, a higher percentage of morbidly obese patients had clinically significant (>5%) BMI loss; however, this was not significant. Cox hazard ratio with BMI <30 kg/m2 as a reference demonstrated no significant difference in survival to PJI and all-cause revision in the morbidly obese cohort. Conclusion: Morbidly obese patients (BMI >40 kg/m2) require increased resource expenditure in the acute postoperative period. However, they are not inferior to the control cohorts (BMI <30 kg/m2, BMI 30-40 kg/m2) in terms of PJI or all-cause revisions at mid-term follow-up.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the bone mineral density (BMD), body mass index (BMI), stress, and health promotion lifestyle of female college students and to assess relations among them. Methods: A total of 220 female college students were assessed through anthropometric measurements and bone mineral density test using quantitative ultrasound. In addition, the subjects were asked about stress and health promotion lifestyle with a self-rating questionnaire. Collected data were processed with the SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. Results: 1) Of the students, 67.8% had weight control experience. The percentage of the osteoporosis, osteopenia and normal groups were 2.8%, 53.5% and 43.8%, respectively, and the percentage of the underweight, normal and overweight groups according to BMI were 27.9%, 57.2% and 14.9%, respectively. 2) The levels of stress and health promotion lifestyle were 2.9 and 2.3, respectively. 3) There was a positive correlation between BMD and BMI (r=.196, p<.01). There was a negative correlation between stress and health promotion lifestyle (r=-.35, p<.01). 4) Weight control experience made negative effects on BMD and BMI. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest the necessity of new health promotion programs to increase bone density of female college students. Stress management programs are also needed.
This study was undertaken to assess the potential of body mass index (BMI) as a risk factor for massive hemorrhage (MH) after cesarean section (CS) in patients with placenta previa. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent CS for placenta previa between January 2010 and December 2018. MH was defined as an estimated blood loss ≥2,000 mL during surgery. Clinical characteristics, including BMI, were compared between the groups with and without MH. Subsequently, multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the independent risk factors for MH. A total of 189 patients were included in this study. MH was observed in 28 patients (14.8%). According to the multivariable logistic regression analysis results, the risk factors independently associated with MH were BMI at delivery (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.19; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04-1.35; P=0.012), placenta accrete (aOR, 24.55; 95% CI, 2.75-219.02; P=0.004), and total previa degree (aOR, 9.86; 95% CI, 2.71-35.96; P=0.001). The study findings showed that maternal obesity, namely a higher BMI at delivery, was an independent risk factor for MH after CS in patients with placenta previa. Close attention should be paid to the potential risk of hemorrhage associated with maternal obesity as well as the well-known risk factors of placenta accreta and total previa degree.
Objectives: Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are known to be the detrimental chemicals in the body, even at low levels, and are stored in adipose tissue. Recently, POPs have been reported to be associated with chronic diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular disease, and aging and obesity are reported as common factors in chronic disease. However, there have been only a few studies on the associations of POPs with age and body mass index (BMI) in Korea. Therefore, we analyzed the associations of serum POPs levels with age and BMI in Korea. Methods: This cross-sectional study includes 444 subjects (253 men and 191 women) from the Korean Cancer Prevention Study-II (2004-2011). Serum levels of 33 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 19 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were measured by a gas chromatographer (Agilent 6890) coupled to high resolution mass spectrometer (JEOL JMS-800D). Results: Concentrations of PCB 153 (men: 12.26 ng/g lipid, women: 10.50 ng/g lipid) and p,p'-DDE (men: 94.66 ng/g lipid, women: 96.66 ng/g lipid) were the highest among serum PCBs and OCPs, respectively. PCBs and OCPs were significantly positively correlated with age in both sexes. After adjustment for age, non-dioxin like PCBs were significantly negatively correlated with body mass in women. However, cis-heptachlor epoxide was significantly positively correlated with body mass index in both sexes. When analyzed by sex, stronger associations were shown between POPs and age in men and POPs and BMI in women. Conclusion: These results may provide baseline data for the study of POPs and for the health management field in Korea.
The purpose of the this study was to investigate the dietary behavior and the food habits of university freshman according to body mass index. Questionnaire were completed by 532 students in university freshman. The data were analyzed by SAS program. The results were as follows : The means of normal group's height, weight were $175.00{\pm}5.98cm,\;72.93{\pm}10.20kg$ for male students and $162.00{\pm}4.75cm,\;51.97{\pm}4.98kg$ for female students. Under 20 of BMI(body mass index) among students were 69.7% for male and 9.6% for female. $Twenty{\sim}twenty\;five(20{\sim}25)$ of BMI were 21.9% for male and 40.2% for female. The consumption of milk, oil and animal fat were significant according to BMI. There was high significant difference in the score of exercise and activity. In the self recognition of body shape 59.0% of male and 52.6% of female in normal weight group answered that their weight had to be a little thin. Self satisfaction rate was significantly higher in under weight group compared to normal weight group. This study suggest that a comprehensive nutrition education program is need for university students to improve desirable food habits and recognition of rate of figure.
Maintaining adequate fluid balance is essential for all biological functions in the body. The purpose of this study was to evaluate vulnerability to dehydration by analyzing age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and blood lipid parameters in health checkup examinees who visited Sahmyook Seoul Hospital for comprehensive health checkups. In a binary logistic regression analysis stratified by age and body mass index the odd ratio for dehydration was as high as 3.317 (95% CI: 1.666~6.605) in the 50s age group, 4.224 (95% CI: 2.038~ 8.755) in the 60s age group, and 4.610 (95% CI: 1.943~10.940) in the above 70s age group compared to 20s reference age group. Aged females showed greater vulnerability to dehydration with significance levels of P<0.01 and P<0.001. Compared to a normal weight (BMI: 18.5~22.9) the odd ratio was higher in males with an under weight (BMI: less than 18.5) (5.130 [95% CI: 1.631~16.132]) and in females with an over weight (BMI: 23.0~24.9) (1.500 [95% CI: 1.065~2.114]). In conclusion, our results showed that vulnerability to dehydration increased with age and was higher in under weight males and over weight females than that in normal weight.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the association of waist circumference (WC) with body composition among individuals with a normal body mass index (BMI) to distinguish muscle and fat mass, as both affect health differently. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We analyzed dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry data (derived from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey, which includes information on fat and lean mass) of 7,493 adults with a normal BMI. Subjects were categorized into four groups of increasing WC. The fourth group was defined as being centrally obese. Each number of subjects are as follows: 1,870, 695, 231, and 39 among men and 3,054, 1,100, 406, and 98 among women. We conducted a sex-stratified linear regression analysis of body composition according to WC group after adjustments for covariates. RESULTS: We observed a positive association of body fat with increasing WC in both men and women (all P for trend: < 0.001). The adjusted mean values for percent body fat with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) according to the four WC groups in ascending order were 17.8 (17.5-18.3), 21.0 (20.6-21.5), 22.1 (21.5-22.8), and 25.1 (24.2-26.1) in men and 29.7 (29.4-30.0), 32.0 (31.6-32.3), 32.9 (32.4-33.4), and 34.7 (33.2-36.1) in women. However, there was an inverted J-shaped association between muscle mass and WC. The fourth group had a higher percent body fat and lower muscle mass than other groups. The adjusted mean values for appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (kg/m2) with 95% CIs according to the four WC groups in ascending order were 7.55 (7.51-7.59), 7.62 (7.56-7.68), 7.65 (7.56-7.74), and 7.22 (7.04-7.41) in men and 5.83 (5.80-5.85), 5.96 (5.92-6.00), 6.03 (5.96-6.10), and 5.88 (5.73-6.03). CONCLUSIONS: There was a positive association between body fat and WC among individuals with normal BMI; conversely there was an inverted J-shaped association between lean body mass and WC. Our findings support the WC measurement should be included in obesity evaluations for adults with a normal BMI.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate nutrients intakes, glycemic index (GI), glycemic load (GL) according to body mass index (BMI) in female college students (n = 320). The study subjects were divided into 3 groups based on their body mass index, an underweight group (BMI < 18.5 kg/$m^2$, n = 55), a normal group (18.5 kg/$m^2$${\leq}$ < 23 kg/$m^2$, n = 231), and an overweight group (23 kg/$m^2$${\leq}$ BMI < 25 kg/$m^2$, n = 34). The food and nutrition intake data obtained by administering a 3-day food record and were analyzed by using Can pro 3.0 software. Anthropometric measurements were collected from each subject. Body weights and BMI of the underweight group were 45.9 kg, 17.6 kg/$m^2$, those of the normal group were 53.8 kg, 20.5 kg/$m^2$, and those of overweight group were 62.6 kg, 23.8 kg/$m^2$, respectively. The mean daily dietary GI of underweight, normal and overweight groups was 66.2, 65.8 and 66.5, respectively. These differences were statistically non-significant. The mean daily dietary GL of underweight, normal and overweight groups were 159.2, 149.4, and 148.9, respectively. The major food source of dietary GI and GL was rice in the three groups. Dietary GI and GL were not significantly correlated with obesity when adjusted for energy, carbohydrate and dietary fiber intake.
1. Objectives : The purpose of this study was to validate the Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) with Positive And Negative Affection Schedule(PANAS) for emotionality and Body Mass Index (BMI) for body constituents. 2. Methods : The SPQ along with Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification (QSCC) II, PANAS, BMI was measured with 232 College students. The correlation coefficient was measured with Pearson correlation between SPQ and PANAS, BMI. The SPQ, PANAS, and BMI score of each Sasang constitution groups based on QSCCII were compared using analysis of variance and profile analysis. 3. Results : The SPQ score of each Sasang constitution groups was significantly (p<0.01) different. The SPQ showed significant correlation with PANAS Positive Affect (r=0.201, p=0.002), but not with the BMI (r=0.097, p=0.146). The SPQ-Emotionality scale, unlike other SPQ subscales, showed positive correlation with PANAS Negative Affection. 4. Conclusions : We performed the constructive validity of SPQ using PANAS and BMI. The SPQ would be useful for the study on psychophysiological mechanism of the Sasang constitutions.
