  • Acid-base reaction together with oxidation-reduction reaction is an important reaction occurring in the aqueous phase. The definition by Lewis on the acid and base is more comprehensive than several definitions. HSAB theory has been introduced to consider the difference in the reactivity among the acids/bases. In this paper, several acid-base reactions were analyzed by applying the definition of acid and base. Moreover, the background of the introduction of HSAB and its application was explained.

Experimental Study on Seismic Performance of Base-Isolated Bridge

  • Base isolation is an innovative design strategy that provides a practical alternative for the seismic design of structures. Base isolators, mainly employed to isolate large structures subjected to earthquake ground excitations and to rehabilitate structures damaged by past earthquakes, deflect and absorb the seismic energy horizontally transmitted to the structures. This study demonstrated that the base isolation system may offer effective performance for bridges during severe seismic events through shaking table tests. Two base isolation systems using laminated rubber bearings with and without hydraulic dampers are tested. The test results strongly show that the laminate rubber bearings cause the natural period of the bridge structure increased considerably, which results in the deck acceleration and the shear forces on the deck acceleratino and the shear forces on the piers reduced significantly. The results also demonstrate that the hydraulic dampers enhance the system's capacity in dissipating energy to reduce the relative displacement between the bridge deck and the pier.

  • It has been known that the organic base complexes formed with the anionic acid base indicators are highly soluble in non-polar solvents but relatively insoluble in water. In the work reported here the formation of the complex between chloropromazine and bromothymol blue was studied and applied it to the determination of the base. The values to determine the binding ratio of the base with the indicator at pH 3.5 obtained from the application of Job's method of continuous variation and mol ratio method were both 1:1. From the application of this reaction to the determination of the base with carbon tetrachloride as the solvent for the extraction, fairy good results have been obtained.

  • Base population, intercensal and postcensal population estimates, and population projections have been regularly published as official populations. Base population is usually made out based on census conducted every 5 or 10 years, and is most important from which intercensal, postcensal estimates, and population projections are derived. We investigate how base population in Korea is made out and then compare it with those of other countries. We also present problems arising from making out base population in Korea.

  • The performance of several turbulence models in computing an axisymmetric supersonic base flow is investigated. A compressible Navier-Stokes code, which incorporates k-ε, k-ω model and Reynolds stress closure with three kinds of pressure-strain correlation model, has been developed using implicit LU-SGS algorithm with second-order upwind TVD scheme. Numerical computations have been carried out for Herrin and Dutton's base flow. It is observed that the two-equation models give large backward axial velocity approaching to the base and somewhat larger variation of base pressure distribution than the Reynolds stress model. It is also found that the Reynolds stress model with third order pressure-strain model in the anisotropy tensor predicts most accurate mean flow field.

  • Base isolation systems are economic and efficient for the control of structural vibration. In this study, the base isolators of LRB(laminated rubber bearing) type which have been generally used are fabricated and tested. From the static and dynamic tests, the characteristics of the base isolators, considering strain-hardening, hysteretic damping and horizontal stiffnesses, etc., are verified and particularly the feasibility as base isolation devices is discussed. Consequently, the test results are compared with the analytical ones that are derived from idealization as a bilinear model.

  • This paper concerns on one-DOF non-rotating active magnetic bearing (AMB) system subject to base motion. In such a system, it is desirable to retain the axis within the predetermined air-gap while the base motion forces the axis to deviate from the desired air-gap. Motivated from this, an optimal acceleration feedforward control is proposed to reduce the base motion response without deteriorating other feedback control performances. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed optimal feedforward control reduces the standard deviation of the air-gap to 29% that by feedback control alone.

  • Recently, as large structures become lighter and more flexible, the necessity of structural control for reducing excessive displacement and acceleration due to seismic excitation is increased. As a means to minimize seismic damages, various base isolation systems are adopted or considered for adoption. In this study, a base isolation system using Magneto-Sensitive(MS) rubbers is proposed and shown to effectively protect structures against earthquakes. The MS Rubber is a class of smart controllable materials whose mechanical properties change instantly by the application of a magnetic field To demonstrate the advantages of this approach, the MS Rubber isolation system is compared to Lead-Rubber Bearing(LRB) isolation systems and judged based on computed responses to several historical earthquakes. The MS Rubber isolation system is shown to achieve notable decreases in base drifts over comparable passive systems with no accompanying increase in base shears or in accelerations imparted to the superstructure.

Shaking Table Test of the Model of Five-story Stone Pagoda of Sang-Gye-Sa Mounted on Base Isolation Systems (쌍계사 오층석탑모델에 대한 지진격리효과 진동대실험)

  • Seismic performances of the base isolated model of Five Story Stone Pagoda were studied through shaking table tests. Friction pendulum system (FPS), Pure-friction system with laminated rubber bearing (LRB) and Ball with rubber bearing were selected fur the comparison of performances. Performances of specially designed isolation systems were tested dynamically using shaking table. The test results of isolated model are compared with those of fixed base model. Compared with fixed base model, the isolated model showed that it could withstand much higer intensity of earthquake motion. The Effective Peak Ground Acceleration (EPGA) value of isolated model when the top component tipped over was above twice of that value in case of fixed base model. According to the additional test results, the lower value of coefficient of friction than that of common frictional base isolation systems is more effective to protect the piled multi-block system of Pagoda against moderate intesity of ground motion.

  • As the railroad-base is an important factor to maintenance the rolling stocks, it is essential to improve the current problems of the environment pollution, nose, vibration, welfare, work condition and to applicate the performance betterment cases to the new base construction and pre-base maintenance. When the new base construction and pre-base maintenance is proceeded, it is necessary to construct the optimized system which includes the user's opinions enough to prevent the waste of the budget ,in that some part of the budget is spent to improve convenience, work condition, and the fault of base system after the construction. Therefore, this research intends to present the problem of the pre-constructed facilities, the testing operators' opinions, the analysis and the investigation of facilities' improvement, thorough the indication of provisions and the analysis of the result of the survey of testing operators.
