  • In this study, we aimed to study carnation italian ringspot virus (CIRV) in Erigeron annuus (L.) Pers. in Bonghwa County, Korea. The collected samples showed mosaic and malformation symptoms. To identify the virus species, we performed high-throughput sequencing, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, and cloning. The virus was confirmed to be an unreported species, and therefore we performed genome sequencing of the samples. The complete genome was 4,746 nucleotides in length. The CIRV contained five open reading frames (ORFs), and it showed the typical features of members of the genus Tombusvirus. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that ClRV isolates had the highest nucleotide identities with the CZ isolate (95.89%) from Korea. In recent years, these viruses have sporadically been reported in floral scent and medicinal plants. This research found the first natural host infected with CIRV, and provides baseline information to determine the correlation between weeds and crops.

  • Systematic studies for genus Anaphalis in Koreaare relatively scarce. As a fundamental step to further taxonomic studies of this genus, we here propose lectotype for A. morii, endemic taxa in Korea with a brief re-evaluation of its taxonomic entity. During the examination of herbarium specimen for A. morii, we found nine sheets of five collections in three herbaria. Among the original materials, we selected a specimen in TI which was first cited by the author and include an additional annotation, matching with his own description. Also, we were able to determine the taxonomic relationships between A. morii and its relatives, A. yakusimensis. Based on our observation, we identified that several morphological characters are clearly differ from A. yakusimensis occurring only Isl. Yakushima in Japan.

  • This study was conducted to analyze community structure and species composition of Abies koreana forest. Field survey was carried out from June, 2019 to 2020, September. 121 plots (20×20 m) were set up, 5 herb layer plots (3×3 m) were constructed for each plot, and there, Diameter at Breast Height(DBH), height, environmental factor were measured. It was analyzed that water stress did not have a significant effect on the factors affecting the growth of A. koreana in Mt. Halla-san, and in the case of Mt. Deokyu-san, the more forest stands located at the ridge, the higher the tree density. It was found that the factors affecting the distribution of Abies koreana were not consistent according to the environment of study site.

  • The purposes of this study were to understand and compare visitors' and residents' perception about Baekdudaegan. To accomplish the purposes of study, the questionnaire surveys in visitor and resident group were employed at Deogyusan area where is a southern part of Baekdudaegan. As for the results, the knowledge level about Baekdudaegan was low in both groups. Visitors' overall attitudes to management of baekdudaegan were more preservation-oriented as compared with resident group. In addition, both groups pointed there is need to be exceptionally managed through special land zoning approach. The Korea Forest Service, Ministry of Environment, National Parks Authority, local government were perceived as proper management agencies for Baekdudaegan. Findings of this study could be used as basic information for establishing effective management policy in Baekdudaegan. Continuous survey effort which can be aroused public opinion would be asked to produce effective decision-making for Baekdudaegan.

  • The concept of Baekdudaegan(Korean traditional and major mountain system) was conceived toward the close of Silla Kingdom and in the beginning of the Goryeo dynasty. The concept was brought up through the Goryeo dynasty and was completed in the Joseon dynasty. We have to recognize the next two facts to restore the Baekdudaegan concept these days. Firstly, Baekdudaegan is not the highest watershed line but a domain. Secondly, Baekdudaegan is not a set of ridges but a corporate body of a water system and a mountain system. When it comes to fix the management area of Baekdudaegan, it is necessary to make criteria on the basis of traditional ideas and to include natural characteristics considering physical environment. The management area of Baekdudaegan include the third order of stream with the conservation area including the first order of stream. The most important thing in the management strategy is to prevent the damage of configuration of the ground. Baekdudaegan is a symbol of Korea spirit. Therefore, to manage Baekdudaegan wisely is one of ways to lay down the stepping stone of our country's reunification.

  • We studied antioxidant activities of Vaccinium oldhamii Miq. from 11 regions in South Korea and blueberries, domestically produced and imported. Correlation analysis between V. oldhamii habitats, environmental factors, and antioxidant properties was conducted. DPPH RC50 values ranged from 220.44 to 902.38㎍/mL, ABTS from 524.29 to 1230.97 ㎍/mL, and FRAP from 1783.71 to 2235.78 ㎛ Fe (II)/g. V. oldhamii from Gumi showed highest DPPH activity, Taean and Haenam for ABTS, and Gimcheon for FRAP. V. oldhamii exhibited superior antioxidant activities compared to blueberries. Meteorological conditions correlated positively with ABTS and DPPH activities, negatively with wind speed and humidity affecting DPPH and phenolic, flavonoid, and anthocyanin contents. Based on these findings, it is suggested that V. oldhamii fruits collected from Gimcheon and Gumi regions can be effectively utilized as natural antioxidants derived from plant materials.

  • Background: Camellia sinensis L.(CS) is a perennial evergreen species of plant whose leaves are used to produce tea. In this plant species, the parts used are the leaves, sub-branch parts are thrown out. Methods and Results: Ethanol extract of sub-branch parts was used for isolation of major compounds by column chromatography. Structures were identified as caffeine (1), (-)-epicatechin (2) and (-)-epicatechin gallate (3) by interpretation of spectroscopic analysis, including $^1H$- and $^{13}C$-NMR. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was used to compare the quantitative level of marker compounds in various extraction solvents of sub-branch parts of CS. The content of caffeine, (-)-epicatechin, and (-)-epicatechin gallate in 30% ethanol extract showed higher value with $3.28{\pm}0.57mg/g$, $5.53{\pm}0.88mg/g$, and $1.29{\pm}0.24mg/g$, respectively. Conclusions: These results indicated that not only leaves parts but also sub-branch, could be a good source for the functional material and pharmaceutical industry.
