  • There are several methods for the time delay estimation between signals to two receivers. Among these methods, Generalized Cross Correlation (GCC), which estimates the relative delay from the cross-correlation between the different signals at the two receivers, is a traditionally well-known method. However, when using a narrow band Continuous Wave (CW) signal, the GCC method degrades the estimation performance from relatively higher signal-to-noise ratio than when using a wideband signal. To improve this phenomenon, this paper examines four different pre-processors for GCC using narrow band single frequency signals. Simulation shows that the performance gain of the preprocessed GCC is up to 9 dB for a 100 msec CW signal as well as up to 4 dB for a 1 s CW signal.

  • In this paper, microstrip bandpass filter combined DCRLH metameterial-cells with a hairpin resonator is designed and fabricated to be transferred only fundamental passband signal, and removed a spurious resonant mode occurring when filter design using a microstrip transmission line is done. The bandpass filter is composed of CCRLH hairpin resonator and DCRLH interdigit metameterial-cells. The hairpin resonator with CCRLH property is implemented between two DCRLH interdigit metameterial-cells with DCRLH property, which is parallel to input port and output port. The interdigit metameterial-cells suppress spurious harmonics occurring on the higher order frequency and improve a filter performance. Insertion loss of the fabricated microstrip bandpass filter on the passband from 1.91GHz to 2.41GHz is 0.2dB, and attenuation on the stopband from 3GHz to 7.7GHz is bellower than -30dB. Therefore, this filter has a good performance for both mobile communications of WCDMA and wireless internet of WiBro.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of thermocycling on bond strength between metal and resin cement according to thermocycling, and to observe the bond failure modes with optical microscope(X30). For this purpose, Super-Bond C & B and Panavia 21 resin cement were used. Metal specimens were made of Vera-Bond and the surface of specimens were sandblasted with $50{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide. All experimental groups were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 72 hours, followed by thermocycling between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ with 15 second dwell time. 500, 1000, 2000 cycles of thermocycling were executed and the tensile bond strength was measured by Instron Universal Testing Machine(Model 4201) The obtained results were as follows : 1. Super-Bond C & B and Panavia 21 did not show statistically significant difference accor-ding to thermocycling test(P>0.05). 2. Super-Bond C & B specimens exhibited statistically significant higher tensile bond stre-ngth than Panavia 21 for all experimental groups(P<0.05). 3. Super-Bond C & B exhibited mixed mode failure with partial adhesive and partial cohe-sive failure, and most of Panavia 21 exhibited cohesive failure and some mixed mode failure.

  • In this paper, a small BPF(band pass filter) is designed using new probe type for wireless communication system. The dielectric resonator is used high Q ceramics for low loss characteristic. In order to provide a band pass filter which can be reduced in dimension, can be reduced in height, and can be surface-mounted. The filter was fabricated using $TE_{01{\delta}}$ mode dielectric resonator. The input/output probes are attached to coner portion of the rectangular metal cavity. Results of the manufactured filter($12{\times}12{\times}8[mm]$) show that the center frequency is 9.95358[GHz], the insertion loss is -1.9[dB], the 3[dB]_bandwidth is 14.9[MHz], and the loaf Q is 664.

  • In this paper, the simplified design methodology for rotation of polarization plane using a square waveguide is proposed. In order to optimize the characteristics of $180^{\circ}$ polarizer operating from 14.3GHz to 14.8GHz in Ku-band, the modified mode matching method and piecewise power tower interpolation are applied to the polarizer design. The optimized results show that the frequency bandwidth in VSWR<2 has covered 500MHz in the Ku-band and phase difference between two orthogonal modes $TE_{10}$and $TE_{01}$ is $180^{\circ}{\pm}1^{\circ}$ in the range of 14.3GHz~14.8GHz. The cross polarization loss has obtained below 40dB and the insertion loss has 0.1dB in the passband. Therefore, the proposed polarizer is suitable for practical Ku-band system requiring the low VSWR and compact size.

  • This paper describes a 10-bit 210MHz CMOS current-mode Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) consisting of 6 bit MSB current cell matrix Sub-DAC, 2 bit mSB unary current source Sub-DAC, and 2 bit LSB binary weighting Sub-DAC for Wireless LAN application. A new deglitch circuit is proposed to control a crossing point of signals and minimize a glitch energy. The proposed 10-bit CMOS current mode DAC was designed by a $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS double-poly four-metal technology rate of 210MHz, DNL/INL of ${\pm}0.7LSB/{\pm}1.1LSB$, a glitch energy of $76pV{\cdot}sec$, a SNR of 50dB, a SFDR of 53dB at 200MHz sampling clock and power dissipation of 83mW at 3.3V

  • We proposed a fusion splicing method for low splicing loss between a single-mode fiber(SMF) and two different photonic crystal fibers(PCFs) such as a photonic bandgap fiber(PBGF) and highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber(NL-PCF). The splicing loss between the SMF and PBGF is affected by air-hole collapse. Therefore, we optimized fusion splicer and reduced a splicing loss below 1.22 dB. We also inserted a Intra High Numerical Aperture(UHNA) fiber between the SMF and NL-PCF to achieve a splicing loss of below 2.59 dB.

  • Optimal net residual dispersions (NRDs) of inline dispersion management (DM) for compensating the signal distortion of $24{\times}40$ Gbps WDM channels in optical transmission links, in which optical phase conjugator (OPC) is placed from 250 km to 750 km by spacing 50 km in 1,000 km total transmission length of single mode fiber (SMF), are induced as a function of various ope positions. And, performance improvement of WDM channels in transmission links with the induced optimal NRD is investigated by comparing with that in transmission links with NRD = 0 ps/nm. It is confirmed that optimal NRDs are decided by displacement of OPC from mid-way of total transmission length, i.e. 500 km, and the determinating and applying of optimal NRD in case of ope displacement into transmitters is more stable and effective than that in case of ope displacement into receivers from 500 km. Also, it is shown that eye opening penalties (EOPs) of WDM channels in transmission links with optimal NRD are improved by 1.5 dB to 3 dB, which are related with OPC position, from that obtained in transmission links with fixed NRD of 0 ps/nm.

  • We designed the $1.3/1.55\mum$ WDM directional coupler and its coupling length was calculated with the variation of the two waveguide's core separation and other variables by the Fourier transformed scalar wave equation. We deposited the PSG films for optical waveguide by low pressure chemical vapor deposition and fabricated the WDM coupler using the laser lithography and $CF_4/O_2$ reactive ion etching process. A V -groove which was made to support and fix the optical fiber is fabricated on Si substrate by chemical etching. The WDM coupler and the V-groove are connected using UV curing epoxy. We found that propagation mode of each port of WDM coupler is single mode and maximum extinction ratio between two out ports is 6 dB for $1.3.\mum$, and 12 dB for $1.55\mum$. /TEX>.

  • Dielectric thin film mirrors are embedded in multimode and single-mode fibers by a fusion splicing technique. The fibers with $45{\circ}$ angled embedded mirrors serve as ultra-compact directional couplers with low excess optical loss of 0.2 dB for multimode and 0.5 dB for single mode at 1.3 ${\mu}m$ and excellent mechanical properties. The reflectance is wavelength dependent and strongly polarization depencient. Far-field scans of the reflected output power measured with a white-light source show a pattern which is almost circularly symmetric with aspect ratio of 1.09 at 5% of the peak power. The splitting ratio in a multimode coupler measured with a diode laser source is much less dependent on input coupling conditions than in conventional fused biconical-taper couplers, indicating that these couplers are less susceptible to modal noise occuring in optical fiber communication systems. Spectral properties of multilayer internal mirrors normal to the fiber axis have been investigated experimentally, and a matrix analysis has been used to explain the results.
