The objectives of this study are to investigate effective stiffness of Rectangular reinforced concrete bridge columns. It is reasonable to use yielding effective stiffness of columns in seismic bridge design, especially in case that plastic hinges form at the bridge columns. In this study, the material nonlinear analysis was conducted for 3, 240 column sections of which variables were the concrete compressive stress, the steel yielding stress, the longitudinal steel location parameter, the longitudinal steel ratio, the axial load level, and the diameter of section. Based on the analytical results, an effective stiffness including two variables(longitudinal steel ratio and axial load ratio) was proposed by regression analyses, and it is compared with test results and the proposed equation for yielding effective stiffness of circular bridge columns.

The main objective of this research is to examine the behavior of high-strength concrete(HSC) columns. Eight test columns in one-third scale were tested under the conditions of cyclic lateral force and a constant axial load equal to 30% of the column axial load capacity. The $200{\times}200mm$ square columns were reinforced with eight DB bars constituting a longitudinal steel ratio of 2.54% of the column cross-sectional area. The main experimental parameters were volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement(${\rho}_s$=1.58, 2.25 percent), tie configuration(Type H, Type C, Type D) and tie yield strength($f_{yh}$=548.8 and 779.1 MPa). It was found that the hysteretic behaviour and ultimate deformability of HSC columns were influenced by the amount and details of transverse reinforcement in the potential plastic hinge regions. Columns of transverse reinforcement in the amount 42 percent higher than that required by seismic provisions of ACI 318-02 showed ductile behavior. At 30% of the axial load capacity, it is recommended that the yield strength of transverse reinforcement be held equal to or below 548.8 MPa. Correlations between the calculated damage index and the damage progress are proposed.
The effect of reinforcing concrete members with high strength steel bars with yield strength up to 600 MPa on the overall seismic behavior of concrete moment frames was studied experimentally and numerically. Three geometrically identical plane frame models with two bays and two stories, where one frame model was reinforced with hot rolled bars (HRB) with a nominal yield strength of 335 MPa and the other two by high strength steel bars with a nominal yield strength of 600 MPa, were tested under simulated earthquake action considering different axial load ratios to investigate the hysteretic behavior, ductility, strength and stiffness degradation, energy dissipation and plastic deformation characteristics. Test results indicate that utilizing high strength reinforcement can improve the structural resilience, reduce residual deformation and achieve favorable distribution pattern of plastic hinges on beams and columns. The frame models reinforced with normal and high strength steel bars have comparable overall deformation capacity. Compared with the frame model subjected to a low axial load ratio, the ones under a higher axial load ratio exhibit more plump hysteretic loops. The proved reliable finite element analysis software DIANA was used for the numerical simulation of the tests. The analytical results agree well with the experimental results.
In this paper, the condensation method which is based on the Rayleigh-Ritz method, is described for the free vibration analysis of axially loaded slightly curved beams subject to partial axial restraints. If the longitudinal inertia is neglected, some of the Rayleigh-Ritz minimization equations are independent of the frequency. These equations can be used to formulate a relationship between the weighting coefficients associated with the lateral and longitudinal displacements, which leads to "connection coefficient matrix". Once this matrix is formed, it is then substituted into the remaining Rayleigh-Ritz equations to obtain an eigenvalue equation with a reduced matrix size. This method has been applied to simply supported and partially clamped beams with three different shapes of imperfection. The results indicate that for small imperfections resembling the fundamental vibration mode, the sum of the square of the fundamental natural and a non-dimensional axial load ratio normalized with respect to the fundamental critical load is approximately proportional to the square of the central displacement.
Stability of a cylindrical shell subject to a uniform axial compression, which is a power function of time, is examined within the framework of small strain elasto-plasticity. The material of the shell is incompressible and the effect of the elastic unloading is considered. Initially, employing the infinitesimal elastic-plastic deformation theory, the fundamental relations and Donnell type stability equations for a cylindrical shell have been obtained. Then, employing Galerkin's method, those equations have been reduced to a time dependent differential equation with variable coefficient. Finally, for two initial conditions applying a Ritz type variational method, the critical static and dynamic axial loads, the corresponding wave numbers and dynamic factor have been found. Using those results, the effects of the variations of loading parameters and the variations of power of time in the axial load expression as well as the variations of the radius to thickness ratio on the critical parameters of the shells for two initial conditions are also elucidated. Comparing results with those in the literature validates the present analysis.
This paper numerically investigated the behavior of built-up square concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns under combined preload and axial compression. The finite element (FE) models of target columns were verified in terms of failure mode, axial load-deformation curve and ultimate strength. A full-range analysis on the axial load-deformation response as well as the interaction behavior was conducted to reveal the composite mechanism. The parametric study was performed to investigate the influences of material strengths and geometric sizes. Subsequently, influence of construction preload on the full-range behavior and confinement effect was investigated. Numerical results indicate that the axial load-deformation curve can be divided into four working stages where the contact pressure of curling rib arc gradually disappears as the steel tube buckles; increasing width-to-thickness (B/t) ratio can enhance the strength enhancement index (e.g., an increment of 1.88% from B/t=40 to B/t=100), though ultimate strength and ductility are decreased; stiffener length and lip inclination angle display a slight influence on strength enhancement index and ductility; construction preload can degrade the plastic deformation capacity and postpone the origin appearance of contact pressure, thus making a decrease of 14.81%~27.23% in ductility. Finally, a revised equation for determining strain εscy corresponding to ultimate strength was proposed to evaluate the plastic deformation capacity of built-up square CFST columns.
This paper presents an investigation on seismic behavior of out-of-code Q690 circular high-strength concrete-filled thin-walled steel tubular (HCFTST) columns made up of high-strength (HS) steel tubes (yield strength $f_y{\geq}690MPa$). Eight Q690 circular HCFTST columns with various diameter-to-thickness (D/t) ratios, concrete cylinder compressive strengths ($f_c$) and axial compression ratios (n) were tested under the constant axial loading and reversed cyclic lateral loading. The obtained lateral load-displacement hysteretic curves, energy dissipation, skeleton curves and ductility, and stiffness degradation were analyzed in detail to reflect the influences of tested parameters. Subsequently, a simplified shear strength model was derived and validated by the test results. Finally, a finite element analysis (FEA) model incorporating a stress triaxiality dependent fracture criterion was established to simulate the seismic behavior. The systematic investigation indicates the following: compared to the D/t ratio and axial compression ratio, improving the concrete compressive strength (e.g., the HS thin-walled steel tube filled with HS concrete) had a slight influence on the ductility but an obvious enhancement of energy dissipation and peak load; the simplified shear strength model based on truss mechanism accurately predicted the shear-resisting capacity; and the established FEA model incorporating steel fracture criterion simulated well the seismic behavior (e.g., hysteretic curve, local buckling and fracture), which can be applied to the seismic analysis and design of Q690 circular HCFTST columns.
Hollow steel-reinforced concrete-filled GFRP tubular member is a new kind of composite members. Firstly set the mold in the GFRP tube (non-bearing component), then set the longitudinal reinforcements with stirrups (steel reinforcement cage) between the GFRP tube and the mold, and filled the concrete between them. Through the axial compression test of the hollow steel-reinforced concrete-filled GFRP tubular member, the working mechanism and failure modes of composite members were obtained. Based on the experiment, when the load reached the ranges of $55-70%P_u$ ($P_u-ultimate$ load), white cracks appeared on the surface of the GFRP tubes of specimens. At that time, the confinement effects of the GFRP tubes on core concrete were obvious. Keep loading, the ranges of white cracks were expanding, and the confinement effects increased proportionally. In addition, the damages of specimens, which were accompanied with great noise, were marked by fiber breaking and resin cracking on the surface of GFRP tubes, also accompanied with concrete crushing. The bearing capacity of the axially compressed components increased with the increase of reinforcement ratio, and decreased with the increase of hollow ratio. When the reinforcement ratio was increased from 0 to 4.30%, the bearing capacity was increased by about 23%. When the diameter of hollow part was decreased from 55mm to 0, the bearing capacity was increased by about 32%.
Six shear-critical square tubed steel reinforced concrete (TSRC) columns using the high-strength concrete ($f_{cu,150}=86.6MPa$) were tested under constant axial and lateral cyclic loads. The height-to-depth ratio of the short column specimens was specified as 2.6, and the axial load ratio and the number of shear studs on the steel shape were considered as two main parameters. The shear failure mode of short square TSRC columns was observed from the test. The steel tube with diagonal stiffener plates provided effective confinement to the concrete core, while welding shear studs on the steel section appeared not significantly enhancing the seismic behavior of short square TRSC columns. Specimens with higher axial load ratio showed higher lateral stiffness and shear strength but worse ductility. A modified ACI design method is proposed to calculate the nominal shear strength, which agrees well with the test database containing ten short square TSRC columns with shear failure mode from this study and other related literature.

A Seismic retrofit idea based on a first principle is proposed for existing RC walls under various level of axial loading. In application of the proposed retrofit method, designers can choose the size and shape of boundary elements of wall sections for a required level of ductility. For this axial load ratio, steel ratio, and strength of concrete and steel are considered as design parameters. In order to show the usage of the idea, several design charts are presented with an application example.
