This paper presents a numerical model developed to evaluate the load-deflection and moment-curvature relationship for concrete beams strengthened externally with four different Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composite systems. The developed model considers the inelastic behavior of concrete section subjected to a combined axial force and bending moment. The model accounts for tensile strength of concrete as defined by the modulus of rupture of concrete. Based on the adopted material constitutive relations, the model evaluates the sectional curvature as a function of the applied axial load and bending moment. Deflections along the beam are evaluated using a finite difference technique taking into account support conditions. The developed numerical technique has been tested on a cantilever beam with a transverse load applied at its end. A study of the behavior of the beam with tension reinforcement compared to that with FRP areas giving an equivalent ultimate moment has been carried out. Moreover, cracking of the section in the tensile region at ultimate load has also been considered. The results indicated that beams reinforced with FRP systems possess more ductility than those reinforced with steel. This ductility, however, can be tuned by increasing the area of FRP or by combining different FRP layers.
The second order analysis taking place due to non-linear behavior of the structures under the mechanical and geometric factors through implementing exact and approximate methods is an indispensible issue in the analysis of such structures. Among the exact methods is the slope-deflection method that due to its simplicity and efficiency of its relationships has always been in consideration. By solving the differential equations of the modified slope-deflection method in which the effect of axial compressive force is considered, the stiffness matrix including trigonometric entries would be obtained. The complexity of computations with trigonometric functions causes replacement with their Maclaurin expansion. In most cases only the first two terms of this expansion are used but to obtain more accurate results, more elements are needed. In this paper, the effect of utilizing higher order terms of Maclaurin expansion on reducing the number of required elements and attaining more rapid convergence with less error is investigated for the Bernoulli beam with various boundary conditions. The results indicate that when using only one element along the beam length, utilizing higher order terms in Maclaurin expansion would reduce the relative error in determining the critical buckling load and kinematic parameters in the second order analysis.
In the present paper, an extended composite beam theory that has no restriction on the lay-up and can account for Poisson effect which is significant for composite materials is proposed. Buckling equations for composite thin-walled members which are subjected to axial compression are derived based on the composite beam theory. In order to check the validity of the derived buckling equations, the results of experiments on the flexural-torsional buckling of vinylester/E-glass and polyester/E-glass pultruded T-section members and the flexural buckling of vinylester/E-glass pultruded H-section members are used as numerical examples. The comparison of the analytical results to the experimental and FE analysis results reveals that the proposed buckling equations predict the buckling loads of pultruded members conservatively by about 7%.
The seismic performance of steel beam to concrete-encased composite column with unsymmetrical steel section joints is investigated and reported within this paper. Experimental and analytical evaluation were conducted on a total of 8 specimens with T-shaped and L-shaped steel section under lateral cyclic loading and axial compression. The test parameters included concrete strength, stirrup ratio and axial compression ratio. The response of the specimens was presented in terms of their hysterisis loop behavior, stress distribution, joint shear strength, and performance degradation. The experiment indicated good structural behavior and good seismic performance. In addition, a three-dimensional nonlinear finite-element analysis simulating was conducted to simulate their seismic behaviors. The finite-element analysis incorporated both bond-slip relationship and crack interface interaction between steel and concrete. The results were also compared with the test data, and the analytical prediction of joint shear strength was satisfactory for both joints with T-shaped and L-shaped steel section columns. The steel beam to concrete-encased composite column with unsymmetrical steel section joints can develop stable hysteretic response and large energy absorption capacity by providing enough stirrups and decreased spacing of transverse ties in column.
Six specimens are tested to investigate the cyclic behavior of beam-to-column abnormal joints in steel moment-resisting frames, which are designed according to the principle of strong-member and weak-panel zone. Key parameters include the axial compression ratio of column and the section depth ratio of beams. Experimental results indicate that four types of failure patterns occurred during the loading process. The $P-{\Delta}$ hysteretic loops are stable and plentiful, but have different changing tendency at the positive and negative direction in the later of loading process due to mechanical behaviors of specimens. The ultimate strength tends to increase with the decrease of the section depth ratio of beams, but it is not apparent relationship to the axial compression ratio of column, which is less than 0.5. The top panel zone has good deformation capacity and the shear rotation can reach to 0.04 rad. The top panel zone and the bottom panel zone don't work as a whole. Based on the experimental results, the equation for shear strength of the abnormal joint panel zone is established by considering the restriction of the bottom panel zone to the top panel zone, which is suitable for the abnormal joint of H-shaped or box column and beams with different depths.

This paper deals with the vibration and stability of a circular cylindrical shaft, modeled as a tapered thin-walled composite beam and spinning with constant angular speed about its longitudinal axis, and subjected to an axial compressive force. Hamilton's principle and the assumed mode method are employed to derive the governing equations of motion. The resulting eigenvalue problem is analyzed, and the stability boundaries are presented for selected taper ratios and axial compressive force combinations. Taking into account the directionality property of fiber reinforced composite materials, it is shown that for a shaft featuring flapwise-chordwise-bending coupling, a dramatic enhancement of both the vibration and stability behavior can be reached. It is found that by the structural tailoring and tapering, bending natural frequencies, stiffness and stability region can be significantly increased over those of uniform shafts made of the same material. In addition, the particular case of a classical beam with internal damping effect is also included.
We have investigated optimization of the working distance (WD) for a highly miniaturized imaging probe for endoscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT). The WD is the axial distance from the distal end of the imaging probe to its beam focus, which is demanded for dimensional margins of protective structures, operational safety, or full utilization of the axial imaging range of OCT. With an objective lens smaller than a few hundred micrometers in diameter, a micro-optic imaging probe naturally exhibits a very short WD due to the down-scaled optical structure. For a maximized WD careful design is required with the optical aperture of the objective lens optimally filled by the incident beam. The diffraction-involved effect was taken into account in our analysis of the apertured beam. In this study, we developed a simple design formula on the maximum achievable WD based on our diffraction simulation. It was found that the maximum WD is proportional to the aperture size squared. In experiment, we designed and fabricated very compact OCT probes with long WDs. Our 165-㎛-thick fiber-optic probes provided WDs of 3 mm or longer w ith reasonable OCT imaging performance.
The fiber reinforced composite materials have many advantages due to their high strength-to-density ratios. Thus they have been widely used in many industrial applications. As the wave propagation are closely related to dynamic analysis of structures, it is very important to predict them. This paper presents a wave propagation in the axially loaded axial-bending-shear coupled composite laminated beams which are represented by the Timoshenko beam models based on the first-order shear deformation theory.

The apparently different physical problems of lateral vibration and elastic stability of a linear member are limiting cases of a single phenomenon, the more general expression being the mode of vibration with end thrust. For a single-span beam-column, it is generally known that the square of the frequency of lateral vibration is approximately linearly related to compressive axial force. In this paper the relationship between the frequency and axial force of multi-span compression members is investigated by means of the finite element method.

As girders and towers in cable-stayed bridges are subject to bending moments as well as axial forces, the conventional load rating equation, which considers only the single force effect, cannot be used to evaluate the rating factors of cable-stayed bridges. The load rating equation for components in cable-stayed bridges is not currently established yet. In this paper, we propose load rating equations for girders and towers in cable-stayed bridges using the interaction equations for beam-column members. Moving load analyses were performed for the cases of a maximum axial compressive force, maximum positive moment and maximum negative moment for each component in cable-stayed bridges and detailed procedures to apply proposed equations were presented. The Dolsan Grand Bridge was used to verify the validity of proposed equations. The conventional load rating equation overestimates rating factors of girders and towers in the Dolsan Grand Bridge, whereas proposed equations properly reflect the axial-flexural interaction behaviour of girders and towers in cable-stayed bridges.
