Autonomic nervous system of the anesthetized patients can be influenced by the many kinds of stimulations such as intubation, surgical incision and so on. The changes of the heart rates and blood pressures are surrogates of responses of the autonomic system to the external stimulations. Recently, the power spectral analysis of the heart rate variability (HRV) made it easy to know the fractions and changes of sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic systems. In this study, the changes of pulse transit time, one of the response of vessels to stimulations, was investigated in relation to the HRV. Ten patients were examined and average age is 22.5 $\pm$ 11.04, average weight is 63 $\pm$ 14.4 kg. The patients were anesthetized only by sevoflurane inhalation. Pulse transit time is determined by calculating the difference of the time between the R peak of ECG and the characteristic point of the plethysmography. Power spectral density (PSD) of the HRV was achieved in the frequency of 0.04-0.15 (LF) and 0.15-0.4 (HF). Compared to preanesthetic period the values of LF and LF/HF ratio of HRV were decreased (p<0.05). HF and PTT was increased in anesthetic state with sevoflurane. Otherwise, after intubation, the HF was decreased and LF, LF/HF ratio and PTT were increased. PSD of the HRV is well-known for the index of the autonomic nervous activity. Not only HRV but PTT analysis also is a useful index reflecting the autonomic responses to various stimulations. And this analysis is useful in bed side monitoring because the calculating method is simple and it takes shorter processing time compared to the HRV analysis.
We investigated the effects of pulsed magnetic fields (PMF) stimulus on electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha activity and heart rate variability (HRV) from electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements with various stimulus durations at acupoint PC9. The alpha activity in the EEG and the ratio of low frequency power and high frequency power (LHR) in the HRV, a reflection of sympathovagal activity, were increased and decreased, respectively, after PMF stimulus of 3 min. Our spectral analysis quantitatively proved that the changes in the EEG alpha activity were consistent with an autonomic function in the ECG. These findings suggest that appropriate PMF stimulus results in the same effect as that of acupuncture applied to the acupoint PC9, which is closely related to the parasympathetic activity of the autonomic nervous system.
In recent years, some researchers reported that myofascia was innervated by the autonomic nervous system. However, there is no neurophysiological explanation and evidence for the effects of myofascial release(MFR). Thus, the aim of this study was to determine whether the excitability of the autonomic nervous system is modulated by MFR. In this study, thirty healthy subjects in their 20s were randomly assigned to a myofascial release group(MG) and a placebo control group(PCG); each group had 15 subjects. The MG conducted 5 minutes of cranial base release in supine position, and the PCG performed sham cranial base release. Muscle flexibility was measured with the neck range of motion and the changes of the autonomic nervous system excitability was measured by heart rate, blood pressure, and concentration of plasma epinephrine and norepinephrine. The results were as follows: 1. The percentage changes in the cervical range of motion for extension and side flexion were significantly increased in the MG, signifying that more muscle relaxation. 2. There was no significant percentage changes in heart rate, blood pressure, and concentration plasma epinephrine between MG and PCG. 3. The percentage change in concentration plasma norepinephrine was significantly different between MG and PCG. The result of this study suggests that there is no evidence that MFR can modulate the autonomic nervous system excitability.
In this study a practical guarding work is carried out for 180 minutes as the same as the actual guarding work that is done by nine students of the department of security services in K University in order to investigate changes in circadian rhythms during long hour guarding in bodyguards at practical sites. In the results of the tests of the heart rate variation and autonomic nervous system with the interval of 30 minutes using HRV (Heart rate variability), there are no significant differences in HRV and SDNN and that leads to maintain it stably during the guarding work for 180 minutes. In the case of TP which reflects the overall activity level in the autonomic nervous system, it shows a high significant difference (p<.05) at 90 and 120 minutes compared to that of normal states. Also, it shows a significant decrease in the level after a lapse of 120 minutes and that shows a decrease in the activity of the autonomic nervous system for the guarding work more than 120 minutes. Although differences in VLF, LF, and HF are not significant levels, these are influenced on the change in TP. The LH/HF ratio that represents the balance between the sympathetic nerve and the parasympathetic nerve shows a significant high level (p<.05) after a lapse of 30 minutes. Thus, it is considered that the concentration of the guarding work after a lapse of 120 minutes is decreased and there are some tensions and excitations after a lapse of 30 minutes since the beginning of the guarding work.
Objectives : This study was performed to evaluate the effect of dry cupping treatment applied to back-shu points on the autonomic nervous system. Methods : Two groups of sympathicotonia and normal with each 30 volunteers were set up for this experiment. The sympathicotonia group was selected by the criterion for sympathicotonia by the questionnaire composed of 11 items. After 10 minutes for environmental adaptation, the first HRV(heart rate variability) test was conducted, and then, dry cupping therapy was applied to back-shu points for 5 minutes to stimulate sympathetic ganglia lying along the spine. The second HRV test was carried out just after the cupping therapy under the same condition and then, the third test was repeated after two hours based on the first test time. Results : 1. In sympathicotonia group, SDNN(standard deviation of all normal R-R intervals), RMSSD(the square root of the mean of the sum of the squares of differences between adjacent normal R-R intervals), Ln(HF)(high frequency power), nmHF(normalized high frequency power) increased and mHR(mean heart rate), nmLF(normalized low frequency power) decreased significantly right after dry cupping therapy which means dry cupping affects on autonomic nervous system. The effect lasts in these items of nmLF, Ln(HF), nmHF, rLHF(rate ratio of LF/HF). 2. In normal group, SDNN, RMSSD increased and mHR decreased significantly right after dry cupping therapy, too. But, Ln(LF)(low frequency power), nmLF, rLHF unexpectedly increased and nmLF, rLHF stay increased up to 2 hours. Conclusions : The results suggest that the dry cupping therapy has effect on the autonomic nervous system. It is effective to stabilize hyper-sympathetic tone of people diagnosed as Sympathicotonia and activate parasympathetic tone.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of aromatherapy on the autonomic nervous system by the inhalation. The subjects of the study were 64 people aged 20 and under 59 years old, 32 in the experimental group and 32 in the control group. Blending oil with Six aroma(Lavender, Bergamot, Mandarin, Lemon, Cedarwood, Roman Chamomile) was applied to the experimental group, and Jojoba oil was applied to the control group for 30min. Before and after the experiment, HRV(TP, VLF, LF, HF, LF/HF) of the experimental group and the control group were compared and analyzed using pulse wave mesuring instrument(uBioClip v70). There was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in 3 out of 5 items analyzed TP(p<.05), LF(p<.05), HF(p<.01). In other words, aromatherapy increases the total activity of the autonomic nervous system by enhancing the TP, increases the activity of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves, promotes the activity of the heart, Facilitate the activity of the heart. Therefore, if aromatherapy is used steadily in everyday life, it will enable healthy life by positively affecting the autonomic nervous system response.
Background: A quasi-experimental study with non-equivalent control groups was performed to determine an effect of aromatherapy foot bath on stress and autonomic nervous activity. Methods: To confirm the effect of aromatherapy foot bath, aromatherapy foot bath group was asked to have a bathing by dropping 0.5 cc in 18 L water after blending with a ratio of 6:3:1 with essential oil lavender, lemon, and tea tree and a foot bath group was asked for bathing only by water. Results: Aromatherapy foot bath group showed significant decrease in subjective stress score (t=3.465, p=0.001) and stress index (t=3.021, p=0.004) in addition to simultaneous increase in sympathetic nervous activity (t=-2.913, p=0.005). However, no significant stimulation of parasympathetic nervous system was observed (t=-1.831, p=0.072). Conclusions: As aromatherapy foot bath is a possible effective intervention for stress relief, it can be applied as an effective method to relieve the stress for healthy adults and patients.

The aim of this study was to explore the impact of body mass index (BMI) and drumming exercise on autonomic nervous system function in adult women. Ten adult women (aged 30-50) were divided into two groups based on their BMI: a normal BMI group (Low BMI, LBMI < 23 kg/m2) and an overweight BMI group (High BMI, HBMI > 23 kg/m2). Both groups participated in a drumming exercise program, consisting of 50-minute sessions, three times a week, for a duration of 8 weeks. Body composition and heart rate variability were assessed before and after the 8-week exercise period. Heart rate variability was evaluated using linear analysis in the time domain and frequency domain. Additionally, non-linear analysis was conducted using a Poincaré plot. The autonomic nervous system index was determined by measuring parasympathetic nervous system index and sympathetic nervous system index. Following the 8-week intervention, the HBMI group exhibited a significant decrease in weight (p=0.034), BMI (p=0.044), body fat mass (p=0.032), and waist circumference (p=0.013) compared to the LBMI group. Furthermore, the HBMI group demonstrated significant increases in RMSSD (p=0.018) and TP (p=0.033) in linear analysis, as well as SD1 (p=0.018) in non-linear analysis and PNS Index (p=0.040) compared to the LBMI group. RMSSD, SD1, and PNS Index serve as indicators of parasympathetic nervous system activity in linear and non-linear analyses, respectively. These findings indicate that drumming exercise significantly enhances autonomic nervous system function in overweight women.
Physical activities in the forest environment stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system of humans and have positive effects on the autonomic nervous system as well as moods and emotions. However, there are almost no studies on the benefits of exercise in the forest environment for patients with myocardial infarction. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 15-minute single session walking by myocardial infarction patients in the forest and urban environment on the physiological and psychological states. The heart rate variability was measured in 10 patients with myocardial infarction to assess physiological state after single session walking for 15 minutes in the forest environment and urban environment. In order to evaluate the psychological state, a profile of mood scale (POMS) and semantic differential (SD) questionnaire were used. The results of this study showed that 15-minute single session walking in the forest environment activated the parasympathetic nervous system of adult myocardial infarction patients more than 15 minutes of single session walking in the urban environment, and also made them feel more positive in terms of the POMS and SD. Therefore, this study suggests that even single session walking in the forest environment can positively influence the physiological and psychological states of adult heart disease patients and may also contribute to health care.
