  • SCM415 alloy was implanted with nitrogen ions using plasma source ion implantation (PSII), at a dose range of $1{\times}10^{17}\;to\;6{\times}10^{17}\;N^+cm^{-2}$ Auger electron spectrometry (AES) was used to investigate the depth profile of the implanted layer. Friction and wear tests were carried out on a block-on-ring wear tester. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the micro-morphology of the worn surface. The results revealed that after being implanted with nitrogen ions, the frictional coefficient of the surface layer decreased, and the wear resistance increased with the nitrogen dose. The tribological mechanism was mainly adhesive, and the adhesive wear tended to become weaker oxidative wear with the increase in the nitrogen dose. The effects were mainly attributed to the formation of a hard nitride precipitate and a supersaturated solid solution of nitrogen in the surface layer.

  • Nano-wear and friction of carbon overcoated laser-textured and mechanically-textured computer hard disk were characterised after contact start/stop (CSS) wear test. Various analytical and mechanical testing techniques were employed to study the changes in topography, roughness, chemical elements, mechanical properties and friction characteristics of the coating arising from the contact start/stop wear test These techniques include: the atomic force microscopy (AFM), the continuous nano-indentation test, the nano-scratch test, the time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS) and the auger electron spectroscopy (AES). It was shown that the surface roughness of the laser-textured (LT) bump and mechanically textured (MT) Bone was reduced approximately am and 7nm, respectively, after the CSS wear test. The elastic modulus and hardness values increased after the CSS test, indicating straining hardening of the top coating layer, A critical load was also identified fer adhesion failure between the magnetic layer and the Ni-P layer, The TOF-SIMS analysis also revealed some reduction in the intensity of C and $C_2$$F_59$, confirming the wear of lubricant elements on the coating surface.

  • NiCo silicide films have been fabricated from $300{\AA}-thick\;Ni_{1-x}Co_{x}(x=0.1\sim0.9)$ on Si-substrates by varying RTA(rapid thermal annealing) temperatures from $700^{\circ}C\;to\;1100^{\circ}C$ for 40 sec. Sheet resistance, cross-sectional microstructure, and chemical composition evolution were measured by a four point probe, a transmission electron microscope(TEM), and an Auger depth profilemeter, respectively. For silicides of the all composition and temperatures except for $80\%$ of the Ni composition, we observed small sheet resistance of sub- $7\;{\Omega}/sq.,$ which was stable even at $1100^{\circ}C$. We report that our newly proposed NiCo silicides may obtain sub 50 nm-thick films by tunning the nickel composition and silicidation temperature. New NiCo silicides from NiCo-alloys may be more appropriate for sub-0.1${\mu}m$ CMOS process, compared to conventional single phase or stacked composit silicides.

  • Co/Ti bilayer structure in Co salicide process helps to the improvement of device speed by lowering contact resistance due to the epitaxial growth of $CoSi_2$layers. We investigated the epitaxial growth and interfacial mass transport of $CoSi_2$layers formed from $150 \AA$-Co/Ti structure with two step rapid thermal annealing (RTA). The thicknesses of Ti layers were varied from 20 $\AA$ to 100 $\AA$. After we confirmed the appropriate deposition of Ti film even below $100\AA$-thick, we investigated the cross sectional microstructure, surface roughness, eptiaxial growth, and mass transportation of$ CoSi_2$films formed from various Ti thickness with a cross sectional transmission electron microscopy XTEM), scanning probe microscopy (SPM), X-ray diffractometery (XRD), and Auger electron depth profiling, respectively. We found that all Ti interlayer led to$ CoSi_2$epitaxial growth, while $20 \AA$-thick Ti caused imperfect epitaxy. Ti interlayer also caused Co-Ti-Si compounds on top of $CoSi_2$, which were very hard to remove selectively. Our result implied that we need to employ appropriate Ti thickness to enhance the epitaxial growth as well as to lessen Co-Ti-Si compound formation.

  • Unusual surface impurity levels of PREPed Ti-51at%Al powders were analyzed using Auger spectroscopy and they were compared with these obtained from bulk starting electrode. Oxygen and carbon contents were varied very much with particle size. Powder surfaces were believed to be mainly covered by a complex compound containing Ti, Al, O, and C. The decrease in contents of oxygen and carbon of powders were attributed to the certain refining reaction of transfer type DC Ar plasma during the powder production.

  • Thin film solar cells are growing up in the market due to their high efficiency and low cost. Especially CdTe and $CuInGaSe_2$ based solar cells are leading the other cells, but due to the limited percentage of the elements present in our earth's crust like Tellurium, Indium and Gallium, the price of the solar cells will increase rapidly. Copper Zinc Tin Sulfide (CZTS) and Copper Zinc Tin Selenide (CZTSe) semiconductor (having a kesterite crystal structure) are getting attention for its solar cell application as the absorber layer. CZTS and CZTSe have almost the same crystal structure with more environmentally friendly elements. Various authors have reported growth and characterization of CZTSe films and solar cells with efficiencies about 3.2% to 8.9%. In this study, a novel method to prepare CZTSe has been proposed based on selenization of stacked Copper Selenide ($Cu_2Se$), Tin Selenide ($SnSe_2$) and Zinc Selenide (Zinc Selenide) in six possible stacking combinations. Depositions were carried out through RF magnetron sputtering. Selenization of all the samples was performed in Close Space Sublimation (CSS) in vacuum at different temperatures for three minutes. Characterization of each sample has been performed in Field Emission SEM, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, EDS and Auger. In this study, the properties and results of $Cu_2ZnSnSe_4$ thin films grown by selenization will be presented.

  • The surveyed Boseong river, flows from south to north crossing Boseong gun Mirukg myon, Nodong myon, Yuleo myon, Bocgnae myon, Mundeog myon, and Seungju gun Nam myon, Jeonranam do. The geology of the surveyed area consists of age-unknown composite gneiss and schist, crystaline chlorite gneiss, porphyroblastic gneiss and granite gneiss, and metasediments of Myon Bong formation and Seologri formation. These metamorphic rocks are intruded by cretaceous biotite granite, granodiorite, and quartz diorite. The heavy sands occur in Quarternary alluvium and colluvium. The composition of the river bed is sand 60%, gravel 30%, and clay 10%. The gravel content of the river bed decreases as the increases. The average depth of auger boring is 0.87 m. The average heavy mineral composition of the heavy sand is monazite 6.83%, zircon 4.88%, ilmenite 11.36%, magnetite 8.36% and garnet 4.84%. The best heavy minerals separation procedure would be primary treatment of the sand by humphrey spiral and table, and retreatment of the table concentrate by magnetic separator. The minimum economically feasible capacity of gravity and magnetic separation plant would be 500 ton/hr when only the heavy minerals are recovered but it may be reduced to 100 ton/hr. capacity, if gravels and sands are added to the valuable products.

  • Cr-N films were deposited on low-carbon steel sheets by the reactive arc-induced ion plating (AIIP). The influence of the deposition conditions (nitrogen pressure and substrate bias voltage) on the crystal orientation, morphology and microhardness of the Cr-N films has been investigated using x-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. The impurities and contaminations on the surface and at the interface, and the layer-by-layer compositions of the film have been analyzed using scanning Auger multiprobe (SAM) and glow discharge spectroscope (GDS). The mixed state of Cr and Cr₂N turned out to have a fine fibrous structure. The Cr₂N films were deposited at a wide range of nitrogen flow rates. The orientations of Cr₂N films were mainly (110) and (111), and the intensity of the (111) peak increased as the substrate bias voltage increased. The microstructure of the Cr₂N film was dense and no columnar structure was observed. The films in the mixed state of Cr₂N and CrN were also dense without columnar structure. The maximum microhardness of the Cr-N films was 2400 kg/㎟ at 10 gf load.

  • The head to disk spacing must be decreased to increase recording densities in hard disk drives. Recently, to decrease the head to disk spacing, smooth disk having no bumps onto the lading zone has used. In this research, we compared the number of particles generated in HDD with smooth and textured disks. We used a sampling method using a particle sampler and a CPC (condensation particle counter) to detect particles in HDD. First, we sampled and counted panicles generated with disk rotational speed and various rest times when the smooth disk and textured disks were used, then analyzed the sampled particles by SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and AES (auger electron spectroscopy). In results of measuring particles, more particles in case of LZT disk drive generated than that of the smooth disk drive in all test modes. The number of particles generated in the smooth disk was very low. The particle generation increased as the rest time increased (smooth/LZT disks) and more particles in case of LZT disk drive generated than that of the smooth disk drive. In results of analyzing particle components, Al, Ti, Si components were detected and we could not found differences between components in case of smooth/LZT disk drive.
