Well-ordered $TiO_2$ nanotubes with Au nanoparticles are a desirable configuration to enhance the gas sensing properties such as response and selectivity due to their high surface area to volume ratio and catalytic effect of Au nanoparticles. We have synthesized the well-ordered $TiO_2$ nanotubes directly on a Pt IDEs patterned $SiO_2/Si$ substrate and then decorated Au nanoparticles on inner and outer surface of $TiO_2$ nanotubes using electrodeposition method. The Au-decorated $TiO_2$ nanotubes shows ultrahigh response to $C2_H_5OH$ and the highest increasing ratio to $H_2$ compared with other gases.
ZnO nanotube arrays were synthesized by a two-step process: electrodeposition and selective dissolution. In the first step, ZnO nanorod arrays were grown on an Au/Si substrate by using a homemade electrodeposition system. ZnO nanorod arrays were then selectively dissolved in an etching solution composed of 0.125 M NaOH, resulting in hollow ZnO nanotube arrays. It is suggested that the formation mechanism of the ZnO nanotube arrays might be attributed to the preferred surface adsorption of hydroxide ion ($OH^{-1}$) on a positive polar surface followed by selective dissolution of the metastable Zn-terminated ZnO (0001) polar surface caused by the difference in the surface energy per unit area between the ZnO nanorod and nanotube.
This paper presents vertical carbon nanotube (CNT) field effect transistors (FETs). For the first time, the author successfully fabricated vertical CNT-based FETs on an anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) template by using atomic layer deposition (ALD). Single walled CNTs were vertically grown and aligned with the vertical pores of an AAO template. By using ALD, a gate oxide material (Al2O3) and a gate metal (Au) were centrally located inside each pore, allowing the vertical CNTs grown in the pores to be individually gated. Characterizations of the gated/vertical CNTs were carried and the successful gate integration with the CNTs was confirmed.
We report a method for making a device on which semi-conducting single-walled carbon nanotubes are attached selectively between two metal electrodes. This method is divided two processes. First we can connect a rope of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) between two electrodes using the electric field. But a SWNTs' rope obtained by the first process was composed of a few of metallic and semi-conducting SWNTs together. The second process is to burn the metallic and semi-conducting nanotubes through applying a voltage. As a result, we can obtain a semi-conducting SWNT device. To make the patterned electrodes, we deposited $SiO_2$(150nm) on a wafer. After then, we made a patterned samples with Ti(200 $\AA$)/Au(300$\AA$). We empirically obtained a electric condition 0.66 $V_{pp}$ /${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$@5MHz. From this result, we verified that most of current go through the metallic nanotubes in this device. When we apply DC voltage between two electrodes, the metallic carbon nanotubes are burnt. Finally, we can obtain a semi-conducting nanotube device which we desire to make. We got the I-V characteristic graph which has shown the semi-conducting property. We hope to apply to the various applications using this selective semi-conducting carbon nanotube deposition method.ethod.
Nanocomposites of gold nanoparticles and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were prepared by electrostatic interaction. Gold nanopartic1es were stabilized by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) in aqueous medium, and MWNTs were modified by poly(diallyldimethylammonium)chloride (PDDA) in water. The as-perpared Au-MWNT nanocomposites were structurally and electrically characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV/Vis spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and cyclo voltammetry (CV). UV/Vis spectra of Au-MWNT nanocomposites showed the characteristic surface plasmon bands in the range of ~515nm, depending on the stabilizers. There is only slight change on the band shape with variation of stabilizing agents for gold nanoparticles. Through FE-SEM and TEM images, the distribution of gold, nanoparticles on the sidewalls of MWNTs was deliberately investigated on Au-MWNT nanocomposites treated with different stabilizers. XPS and CV showed redistribution of electron densities and changes in the binding energy states of nanopartic1es in nanocomposite respectively.

We show that carbon nanotube sensors with gold particles on the single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) network operate as Schottky barrier transistors, in which transistor action occurs primarily by varying the resistance of Au-SWNT junction rather than the channel conductance modulation. Transistor characteristics are calculated for the statistically simplified geometries, and the sensing mechanisms are analyzed by comparing the simulation results of the MOSFET model and Schottky junction model with the experimental data. We demonstrated that the semiconductor MOSFET effect cannot explain the experimental phenomena such as the very low limit of detection (LOD) and the logarithmic dependence of sensitivity to the DNA concentration. By building an asymmetric concentric-electrode model which consists of serially-connected segments of CNTFETs and Schottky diodes, we found that for a proper explanation of the experimental data, the work function shifts should be ~ 0.1 eV for 100 pM DNA concentration and ~ 0.4 eV for $100{\mu}M$.

A universal four-point contact measurement method, has an advantage of non-existence of contact resistance, is demonstrated by the experiments with carbon nanotubes and ZnO nanowire. Ti/Au and Pt are tried to compare the influence of contact resistance between two different metals. These metals are selected to make Ohmic contact and Schottky contact originated from their different work functions. For precise experiments, Ti/Au and Pt are separately evaporated to form double 'four-point contact electrodes' on CNTs or ZnO, and the voltage-current characteristics are measured. This method can be applied to universal resistivity measurement for nanotubes and nanowires.
Circumventing problems lying in the conventional lithographic techniques, we devised a new method for the fabrication of nanometer scale metal wires inspired by the unique characteristics of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Since carbon nanotubes could act as masks when CNT-coated thin Au/Ti layer on a SiO2 surface was physically etched by low energy argon ion bombardment 9ion milling), Au/Ti nano-wires were successfully formed just below the CNTs exactly duplicating their lateral shapes. Cross-sectional analysis by transmission electron microscopy revealed that the edge of the metal wire was very sharply developed indicating the great difference in the milling rates between the CNTs and the metal layer as well as the good directionality of the ion milling. We could easily find a few nanometer-wide Au/Ti wires among the wires of various width. After the formation of nano-wires, the CNTs could be pushed away from the metal nano-wire by atomic force microscopy, The lateral force for the removal of the CNTs are dependent upon the width and shape of the wires. Resistance of the metal nano-wires without the CNTs was also measured through the micro-contacts definted by electron beam lithography. since this CNT-based lithographic technique is, in principle, applicable to any kinds of materials, it can be very useful in exploring the fields of nano-science and technology, especially when it is combines with the CNT manipulation techniques.
